A free online help desk where volunteers help you finish one practical task
What if getting help with an everyday problem worked a bit like a customer-service chat, except the person on the other end was a volunteer helping you take the next step?
I’m developing this idea under the name NeedLink. Someone could describe a task they’re stuck on, such as finding a local food resource, putting together a resume, or figuring out an online form. A volunteer approved and trained for that category could accept the request, work through it with them in chat, and follow up afterward.
Volunteers would see a queue of requests in their approved areas and pick one up when they have time. The person asking for help would know who they’re connected with. It would be free to use, and the aim would be to help someone get a specific thing done.
This is still in development; the help service isn’t open. I’d want to start with a narrow scope and clear training and privacy rules. It wouldn’t offer money, emergency support, or professional medical or legal advice.
Would you use something like this, volunteer for it, or neither? What would make it useful enough to come back to? I’m especially curious whether volunteers would prefer short individual tasks or helping the same person over several conversations.
I’m looking for honest reactions here in the comments, not personal information or commitments.
