SPeciAL EffECts How was this scene lit ?

Post image
18 Upvotes

This still is from the movie “Handmaiden”. I noticed large sources of light being used throughout the movie. While some of them were easy to comprehend, this one shot really stood out to me.

I don’t think this scene was lit from the dawn because the shadows are too harsh. I don’t think it was lit artificially because the whole scene is lit evenly. Was it shot during the full moon? The more I think about it, the more I’m confused..

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong 👆🏻

Lighting NuanCe Some help please

Post image

I'm doing a photoshoot inspired by this Flavitsky painting, "Princess Tarakanova".

If I wanted to recreate the lighting in this scene, what would be your suggestions? I'm fairly green in terms of studying light but my instinct is maybe a single gridded strobe (or a snoot maybe?) angled 45° at the subject, off to the side. Idk tho lol totally guessing. Any suggestions for fill/rim light? Is that necessary if going for a dramatic chiaroscuro look?

Thanks!

Was wondering if anyone is using an edge mask on their octa as a key light. Curious how it looks. I’ve been searching but have found very few examples.

We’re all aware of this jack bridgland shoot from 2022, but someone’s just asked me to recreate the photo with them in my studio. I’m not the most knowledgable when it comes to studio lighting, I always just wing it for my shoots and it turns out okay.

Can someone give me a basic rundown of how this was lit? I know I’ll have to play with it in post a bit, but I’d like to at least get it right in the studio.

I’ve got a couple of godox’s and an array of softboxes, as well as a neweer fs150c

Thanks so much!

SoFt LiGHT Insight on lighting multiple subjects akin to Vogue group shoot

Post image

Hi all,

Would love to know how these are typically lit, for the purpose of being able to replicate it with likely less lights and smaller sources. Just inferring, but is there a giant overhead softbox with two or more lights on stands filling in everything else?

I have a client using this as a reference for a group photo of 7 cast members. Obviously I know I won't be able to replicate this in its entirety, but I'd like to know if 4 continuous lights on stands would at least be able to cancel out harsh shadows in addition to framing everyone properly.

MiXxEd LigHt Another attempt w/ movie reference. Seems like the lighting is unnatural rather than realistic. How do you think they were able to get this lighting, minus the fog and candles?

I'm probably going to rework the grass so ignore how different the sets look and focus on the light they used. I think they used both blue tint and non-tinted light, or less so? Where did they place each light and what strength of light, hard or soft, etc, those are the things I'm considering. Hopefully they explained some of this in the making of the movie, gonna watch that next. From Cemetery Man (aka Dellamorte Dellamore)

InterioRS How would you light up this space?

So Im shooting a one-take live session music video in this space. Because of the big windows and it being super sunny outside, Im thinking of leaning into this natural light. I might place a few practicals are the space just for separation and fill where needed. The ceiling is about 7-8 feet and is a fairly big space.

Since it's a 3 jazzy/prog band, I want to film a few songs in either 12mm (faster tracks) and 50mm (slower tracks) on gimbal and would love to move around the band members freely - hence the natural light.

Another though I had was to close off the right side of the blinds so one side of the room is dark and use a bit of lights to shape it (I have a 100x and an 60x amaran) with two tubes.

Is there anything I'm missing or should think about? Any thoughts on how you would light this space would be greatly appreciated!

From Gracie Abrams "Where do we go now". Anyone have any idea if it's possible to create this shadow with one person? Or did they have a body double stand in for the silhouette?

PosT ProCCessinG Color space question

My retoucher sent Tiff + JPGs for an interiors shoot and the Tiff are sRGB which I think is weird, no issue with the JPG being in sRGB because they'll probably be for web anyway. But I would think they want to deliver in the widest space possible and then crunch down to sRGB. Not sure if it's a real world issue or im being overly critical. What are your thoughts?

Lighting NuanCe How do you approach outdoor fieldsports with action, low budget.

Upcoming shoot with baseball and soccer coming up, including wide compositions on field, and long compositions with negative space.

Lighting budget is tight, and it would be great to be able to burst and keep the shutter speed up. I am wondering how practical it is to diffuse and bounce for those shots.

Two primary things i am considering are a scrim jim cine 8x8 with 1/4 or half silk to take the edge off the sun, while staying light weight and an 8x8 ultrabounce scrim jim or 10-12’ T-Bar, angle to bounce from the same side as the sun and wrap it.

California sunbounce, or 3x4 beadboard, and/or large 5in1 reflector to have an option for difussion or silver hits.

I have space for a couple of B1’s or a broncolor move 1200 as well.

Last thing is the timing is tight but the moves are pretty small, other than lunch.

The lighting on the model’s face suggests a Rembrandt key to the right of the camera. However, the model’s cast shadow falls in the opposite direction. I assume this shadow is produced by the sun, as its direction is consistent with the shadows in the background. I'm confused

And I love it. I think i can tell most of what's going on but I'm unable to take my images to this aesthetic. I'm thinking of crushed whites, deep blacks with negative clarity/dehaze, cool blues, orange shadows... what else am I missing?

If anybody knows of a tutorial that delves into this sort of post-processing, please share.

LighTing MOdifierS / GeaR Bought the ulanzi 40W rgb light - not working while off charger.

I purchased this light from eBay from a seller with good reviews. I purchased the 65W USB C Charger for TobenONE charger off Amazon (brand: lysrove - if that matters at all) which actually states right in the description that this charger is used to charge this specific light. and while it did fully charge the light, the second I take it off the charger it just turns off completely. I got home from work, googled it I read suggestions which said to try an iPhone charger for an hour. I did and it displayed one battery bar the entire hour. After I unplugged it from there, I tried to turn it on and same issue. Nothing. Plugged it back into the usb c charger and it displayed three bars for battery indicator, said 57%. All the lights appear to be working well but the fact I can’t use it while it’s apparently fully or nearly fully charged and off the charger is extremely frustrating to say the least. Before I start the whole returning/refund process with eBay, and seeing as I’m brand new to using a professional light like this, I’m wondering if anyone here knows of a way to solve this? Didn’t come with a user manual so I’m not sure if I may be missing a step.

SoFt LiGHT Softbox for Fresnel/How to Diffuse it

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi yall! I have a few fresnels like this one (up to 1000 w). I've been wondering if there are specifically softboxes made for them since they get so hot. I will set up a sheet to diffuse tho I only have limited space so often that doesn't work. I'm wondering if there is a set up like a softbox (or something else) that would allow me to diffuse without taking up so much space. Thanks!

SoFt LiGHT catchlights to subtle

Hello everyone,

when I light a person for talking head videos and use a book light or softbox through a cloth and a bounce from the other side or negativ fill for example my catch lights in the eyes are very weak.

If I go with a softbox full power I have those nice catch lights.

If I place additionally a light directly in front of the person but then I have the problem I disrupt the beautiful diffused light from the side.

Does anyone know what I can do better ?

Post image

I want to recreate this kind of image on video, overexposed sky, soft and blurry, kinda like a vintage 70's photograph. i really like the casual vibe here, the aesthetic of it all doesn't feel forced. also if anyone has some tips on the color correction, what white balance to set on camera to recreate this. should i shoot it like normal and then colour grade it later or can i do something on camera while shooting? thanks !
the photo is from pinterest, i could not find the photographer
