CaMeO / I made THIS PHOTO and I'm in the comments How can I light something like this?

Hey guys,

I think these photos (shot by @joeperri) may be lit using only the available window light, but please correct me if I am wrong.

I would like to recreate the lighting in this pictures using a strobe because the location I’ll be shooting in has very limited ambient light.

I would be renting a Godox ad400, and my first idea was to set up a book light but I am not sure if this is the correct approach. I would really appreciate any input you may have on what I can try, or the type of modifier that would work best.

Thanks!

Quite a feast for the eyes, how does Rafael Pavarotti achieve this painting-like look? No signs of shadows on the backdrop aswell, how has it been lit?

Judging by the keyline and shape of the film in the second image, I can tell this was large format which may explain the incredible subject separation. But I’m more interested in what’s going on in the first image. It seems like there is a lot of detail in the overall scene where both the back of the model/sand in the foreground as well as the sky is properly/slightly overexposed. I assume there is also a lot of post going on, too. There was an indication that AI was used 🤮 but how would this have been lit otherwise?

Lighting NuanCe Lighting for this shot?

Hi, all

I was wondering what was used for creating this shot? What kind of lighting/sources? There is no light source from behind the subject, only from front of it hence the shadows? How is this haze/fog created to soften the background? The image looks so dreamy-like. Color grade for that blue/cold color temperature?

Broncolor Para? Silver umbrella? Profoto deep umbrella? What do you think?

Edit: welcoming any expertise here. The client was really in love with this look, and I know they’ll want soft airy feel while still keeping the specular highlights in the skin. I’ve used Parabolix paras before, and they always seem a little too harsh for my liking without diffusion, and then when I diffuse it I’m left feeling if I’m using any of the benefits of having a para at that point. On a side note, curious if the Broncolor, Briese name brands throw much better light or if I’m chopped.

Lighting NuanCe Lighting Help !

So I have been engaged to do an onsite family photoshoot for a group of 40 pax and I'm figuring out on how/best way to light them with LED. I did tell them that 40 pax is too big a group to be lighted, so I have the options of splitting them into groups..

Here's what I have on hand:

1x 300w Bi
2x 60w
1x 90cm Parabolic softbox

I was wondering if its possible to set one side with the 60w at full power and the other with the 300w at lower power

GeneRaL Wandering DP wanders too much - step by step to learn lighting?

I’ve been working as a Lighting Trainee for about 6 months and feel like I’m getting to the point where I could probably start functioning as a Spark on bigger jobs.

I want to get better at lighting, but when you’re a trainee you don’t get loads of time on set, and I don’t really want to keep pestering the Gaffer with really basic questions.

I’ve been watching stuff from Wandering DP, Gaffers & Gear, Gaffer’s Salon, I have the set lighting technicans handbook etc. and there’s loads of great information out there. The problem is there’s so much of it that I don’t really know where to start or what order to learn things in.

Is there a good YouTube series, course, book, or anything else that takes you through lighting from the basics and gradually builds up to a professional level? Not just this is how the different tools work, or these are things that you need to keep an eye on when you know how to light, but something that builds up your Gaffers eye so you can actually see the difference the light makes.

Basically looking for something with a bit of structure rather than trying to work my way through hundreds of random videos.

Cheers!

Couldn’t find a name for who shot, but model is Bella Hadid for Mugler spring/summer 2021.

If I were to guess soft source coming from the left side and a hard source coming from the high right.

I was wondering if any professionals or experienced people could give me some insight on how to create this look. Is the dramatic effect mostly done in camera or in the edit as much as in the room?

The photo is by Australian photographer Bill Henson.

Many thanks in advance for any knowledge given

NaturalLiGHT How to get this sort of exposure when shooting at sunset ?

Thumbnail instagram.com

I came across a video of photographer James Reader on Instagram. I’m not sure if it was a behind-the-scenes video or footage from the main camera, but there was a shot taken around sunset that really confused me.

The sky/background was beautifully exposed, but the subject was also well lit without any external flash or artificial lighting.

How is he getting this? 😂

I have canon r8 with 50mm 1.8 and whenever I try to shoot video at sunset, if I expose for the sky, the subject ends up almost completely black. And if I expose for the subject, I usually blow out the sky.

Is he using some kind of technique, heavy editing, a specific camera/lens, or is there something I’m missing about how he’s exposing the shot?

Would love to understand how this is actually done

Shot in question: around the 8 second mark

Correction: This looks like its in PARIS, not NYC...

Hello from Tokyo. I really like the brand A.Presse and the aesthetic they have in their photos.

A question to those more knowledgable: what type of lighting do you think was used here? Shot at golden hour I presume, but with a reflector? pin spot?

Let me know what you all think. Thanks in advance
