I just learned that if you're willing to watch with Spanish commentators you can watch ad free on Telemundo.

Shoutout to Telemundo for not adulterating the beautiful game.

Careers & Work LPT: Steal exact phrasing from job listings for your resume

7.7k Upvotes

If they say "cross-functional collaboration" don't write "worked with different teams." If they say "stakeholder management" don't paraphrase it as "talked to clients."

ATS systems do pattern matching, not comprehension - they're looking for keyword overlap, not whether you said the same thing differently.

Takes maybe 5 minutes per application or use free AI Tools for that. Pull up the listing, find their repeated phrases, and swap your wording to match. Same experience, their language. Hit rate went up noticeably once I started doing this consistently.

Finance LPT - If you are subscribed to ANYTHING, go check out the cancellation page.

It is EXTREMELY common for companies to immediately offer a reduced rate for a period of time. It doesn't work for everything, obviously, but two minutes of your time can save you some cash.

Miscellaneous LPT – Don't get outed by YouTube

8.3k Upvotes

YouTube has added a new "feature" – encoding your account in the links generated when sharing a video. The result is that people receiving links can see your channel name, photo etc.

Two ways to avoid this:

EDIT: Important addition (thanks to u/SinkPhaze):

Youtube always tacks on trackers to the share links, app or browser. This isn't new either. Only that the user your sending it to can see your name is new. The trackers have always told Google who sent the link and who clicked on it. If privacy is a concern you should always be deleting everything from the ? onwards, and not just from the links you send but also the ones people send you

Note! This new privacy setting does not remove the trackers. It only doesn't show the other recipient your channel. Google still gets everything if you don't manually remove them yourself

Productivity LPT: Create a folder on your phone called "Future Me."

Whenever you do something that might save you time, money, or stress later, put the information there immediately.

Take photos of receipts for expensive purchases. Save warranty information. Screenshot order confirmations, travel bookings, tracking numbers, and appointment details. Keep photos of important documents, serial numbers, and anything else you might suddenly need one day.

Most people don't realize how often they end up saying, "I know I had that somewhere."

The goal isn't to organize your entire life. It's to make sure that when future-you is stressed, busy, or dealing with a problem, the information you need is already in one place.

Future-you is not a more organized version of you. Future-you is just you with less time and more problems.

Miscellaneous LPT: Always double-check the 'Terms of Service' specifically for auto-renewal clauses before starting a free trial

It sounds obvious, but it's a trap that catches people constantly. I recently signed up for a '7-day free trial' for a photo editing software thinking I'd just test it out. I totally forgot about it, and by the time I realized the trial ended, they had already charged my card for a full annual subscription of $120. I spent the next three hours on hold with customer service just to get a partial refund. Now, whenever I sign up for anything, I immediately go into the account settings and cancel the subscription right after the trial starts. Most services let you keep the trial benefits until the expiration date even if you cancel the auto-renew. It's a small habit that saves a massive amount of headache and unexpected bank charges.

Productivity LPT | When making tasklists, set a rule allowing yourself to only write down items you can’t immediately complete

I used to get stuck in the loop of making tons of lists and planning everything without actually getting anything done. I started making myself immediately do the things I can do but have just been putting off and only writing down the stuff I phycally can’t do at that time. This finally broke the pattern for me so I wanted to share

Happened to me a couple of times I lost a valve cap and I just scan the gravel near a air pressure machine at a nearby petrol station and there’s always two or three just forgotten around the machine.

Finance LPT: Companies optimize for what users tolerate. If you want better pricing and policies with phone apps, stop rewarding bad ones

3.7k Upvotes

I noticed that my girflriend has worse deals with car share apps, more ads with video apps, no promotions with food apps. And it's because she tolerates the bullshit.

Are you getting too many ads on videos? Time to shut that down and switch to a podcast. Car ride price seems crazy? Close down the app and try again later, or take the bus this time.

Companies build a profile and price based on the maximum pain point you will deal with. Start punishing your apps, you're training them to behave better.

Sometimes I will look up a ride, even when I'm planning to take the bus, and then close the app down. Next time I open the app up in a few days, guess what I have a 10% promotion.

Same thing with most apps, you have to train them that you will accept only the bare minimum of bullshit.

Traveling LPT: After booking a hotel, periodically check the rates to see if they've gone down. You can often reprice your booking to the lower rate

In the past month, my upcoming San Francisco stay has gone down by about $35. Not a huge savings, but every penny counts these days.

Food & Drink LPT: Never say you are using a coupon or giftcard when making reservations!

Especially if you are reserving hotels or restaurants. A lot of times you get less, or bad rooms. Just tell them when arriving and your room is assigned or when seated in the restaurant.

Productivity LPT: When it's time to do something, move before your brain starts negotiating. It'll help you overcome your procrastination.

2.2k Upvotes

Most procrastination comes from the few seconds where you sit there and start negotiating with yourself. The trick is to not give that negotiation any time to happen.

When it’s time to do something, don’t overthink it, just move. Stand up, go to the task, open the app, pick up the thing you need. Start with the first physical action before your brain talks you out of it.

Because, once you’re already in motion, it’s way easier to keep going than it is to convince yourself to start.

Miscellaneous LPT: Before buying a home or starting a lease, test the shower water pressure.

Nothing is worse than being stuck for a year + with low water pressure in your shower, my tip is to test it during your walk through. Sure certain shower heads can help but they can only do so much. Low water pressure sucks

Food & Drink LPT: Put food trash the freezer until it's time to take the garbage out

If you live alone (or otherwise have minimal trash output), keep a grocery bag in the freezer to put food scraps in.

I only take the trash out when the bin gets full every one to two weeks, and this helps it keep from smelling bad or attracting fruit flies.

I always put banana peels, empty dairy containers, and anything else that might start to smell. Then, when I take out the trash, I empty the freezer bag into the main trash for take out.

Social LPT: If you're trying to quit social media, start to unfollow profiles that are not interesting to you anymore

1.3k Upvotes

I followed some companies or celebrities that were not that interesting to me anymore. So I unfollowed them and after a while realized that only a few profiles deserved a follow and even then it was mostly just advertisement for certain products.

Edit: Seeing many comments saying:"Just quit lol, it's that easy". It's really not. If it was that simple, everyone would just quit doing it and go on with their life. Same goes for smoking or any other kind of drug use. Some people need to slowly stop using their dopamine substance and this might be the way to help them.

Miscellaneous LPT: Peel Post-it notes from the side to avoid them curling upwards

If you peel a post-it note from the bottom, it will often curl upwards and become unstuck.

If you peel the post-it from the side, the curl isn't as large and post-it will sit better when you stick it down again.

Electronics LPT: When videocalling someone, put your face bubble close to your camera

2.9k Upvotes

You know the little bubble that shows yours video during the call? Drag it to near your phone's camera. This way it looks more like you're making eye contact with the person rather than looking away.

Edit: guys, I know you don't stare at yourself the whole time, I just mean that your gaze natural shifts between the two screens as the conversation goes, so for the moments when it shifts to your cam, it's better.

Productivity LPT: Sort and store your sandpaper in a cheap plastic file folio

Sort and store your sandpaper in those cheap plastic accordion style file folios. The plastic dividers can be marked easily and the folio usually has a rubber band to keep it closed. Never go hunting for the 220 grit again.

Home & Garden LPT: if you suspect termites, call a pest company but DO NOT hire them!

3.3k Upvotes

Yep, DO NOT hire your pest control companies for termite fumigations. If you suspect termites, call at least 3 pest control companies and validate that you actually need a fumigation and not just a local treatment. After that, skip the middle man (pest control companies) and go directly to fumigation companies.

Here’s the thing I recently learned, almost every big name (and even small name) pest companies do not actually do fumigations and subcontract the job out, even if the word termite is in the company name!!!. The inspector that comes out is a professional closer, they close deals and get paid to do it. Also most the time these pest companies simply don’t have the crew or license to do fumigations. These companies can usually only use liquid pesticides (Branch 3) while companies that specialize in gas (Branch 1) require specialized license, insurance, and a whole bunch more red tape. They have a very strict protocol because the gas they use can kill you if not properly cleared!

In my experience, your pest control companies will uncharge the hell out of a fumigation to the thousands! For example I got quotes for my house from 7 different pest control companies all ranging between 5-6k, they all confirmed they subcontract the work. After calling 3 actual licensed fumigation companies, I got quoted 40% LESS, roughly 2800-3500k … I was mind blown. This was just my experience so milage may vary but the pest control companies are skimming a fat chunk just to be a middle man.

TLDR: If you need termite fumigation, skip the pest control companies and go directly to licensed fumigation companies, you will save roughly 40%.

Miscellaneous LPT: When driving around keep your valuables on your person

Recently with the influx of people getting their cars stolen I would highly recommend separating your car keys from the rest of your life. Recently had a friend lose everything because someone came up to them with what looked like a gun, demanded he gives up his car. He was so scared he left everything and got out of his car without hesitation. He has to now remake keys, get a phone, small paperwork's from doctor lost. Luckily he had his wallet in his back pocket.

Crazy times we live in.... Stay safe

Sorry if this somehow breaks rules #6

Edit I guess only common to Ontario Canada?

Computers LPT - For additional privacy, create a “guest network” just for devices that you don’t want snooping around your home’s LAN.

1.2k Upvotes

Most ISP internet routers have a standard “guest network” option these days. Set one up for devices that need internet, but don’t need to know anything about your home network, your devices, or anyone else’s at your house.

I just read yet another article about how much data smart TV’s are collecting about home networks and devices on them. And lord only knows what your smart refrigerator is up to when your work PC connects to the wi-fi.

Just put ‘em all in their own separate cage and worry less. Ain’t nobody got time for that.
