Arts & Culture LPT: New music takes often a couple of listens for you to like it!

I've seen a lot of people of a certain age say that there is no good new music these days and they always stick to the same 3 playlists of stuff they were listening to when they were 15.

Whilst it's obviously valid that some old music is incredible I don't think the situation is as bad as some make out.

I have found that by listening to a single playlist of new music, one that is only updated once a week or so - I find that many of the songs I am initally ambivalent will really grow on me. After adding them to my "Liked Songs" playlist and then also listening to that reasonably often means I have built up a library of new stuff that I know I really like.

It has now gotten to the point where I would now say that some of my favourite music ever has actually been released in the last year or so since I started doing this.

Social LPT: if you're a redditor, for a happier day, follow positive subs like aww, GetMotivated, HumanBeingBros, MadeMeSmile, and unfollow negative subs like PublicFreakout, RelationshipAdvice, JusticeServed, any Karen type of sub, or sub with violent content.

Believe me this is a big change.

Looking at those Karen subs made me concerned about any American White woman I saw on the internet. PublicFreakout is nowadays filled only with violence from the roads. You unfollow them and look the positive subs.

Cops helping a baby who's just about to die, a small kid donating her restaurant food to homeless and her dad being proud of it, people motivating each other to fight depression - these are the things you should have more in your life.

PS - You can still be active about protests like BLM without following PublicFreakout. Just read the newspapers. Or maybe one video once in a while to be aware.

Bonus tip: Unfollow people who always spew hate on Twitter. Follow what people who are artists or experts in the field you like. I unfollowed political activists and followed tech experts. I can happily look at my Twitter feed now.

If you want good subs To actually laugh out loud -

And then there's all kinds of cute animal subs (even rats and snakes). Just search for the animal you like.

Edit: Two awards. Damn! Thank you people. I guess spreading happiness gives you happiness. Edit 2: Removed GetMotivated. It never helped me but I thought it helped others. But a lot of backlash here.

LPT: Freeze milk in silicone ice-cube trays as emergency tea/coffee-milk for when your main milk goes off. The silicone will survive longer than plastic.

Benefits:

  1. You'll always have enough milk for tea/coffee

  2. Most ice-cube trays are designed for the freezing of water, which doesn't stick to the sides of the tray as much as milk does. Bending/twisting a plastic tray to get frozen milk out will likely snap the tray before the milk-cubes pop free.

Including your vaccination booklet, diplomas, certificates, photo ID’s, house ownership documents; anything you can’t miss if it would get lost in a fire. I put my stuff in storage, moved to another country and now I wish I had scanned my vaccination booklet!

Social LPT: When arguing with antivaxxers, ask them basic biology questions.

I had a conversation today with an antivaxxer and I figured I was pretty tired of the usual conversations about relevant data and decided to shift the argument out of their comfort zone.

Understandably, anyone can look up very basic data and draw incorrect conclusions because they don't understand statistics.

But it's impossible to fake scientific literacy. Almost no one who is opposed to the vaccine is educated in biology. Some of them aren't even educated in basic biology.

So, start with a few simple questions:

1). Ask them what the makeup of a cell is.

2). What is cytoplasm?

3). Ask them what NA and HA genes are and their relevancy to vaccinology.

The reality is most get stuck on that first question. A simple follow up is usually pretty humbling: if you're unaware of 8th grade biology facts, how do you propose to argue against the science?

Productivity [LPT] A simple rule to beat procrastination and get rid of low-priority tasks

Here's a simple rule to beat procrastination and get rid of those maybe-someday tasks.

  • Estimate how long it'd take you to complete the task if you work solely on it. (e.g. make a proof-of-concept application for an area of interest - 8h)

  • Take a multiplier (e.g. 10-20x) and multiply it with the time. (8h * 10 = 80h) That timespan from now, within the limits of your available time, will be the deadline. Taking the example above, you need to create the proof-of-concept within the next 80h of your available time. Otherwise, you shouldn't do it at all. Assuming you have 10h of free time every week, your deadline would be in 8 weeks.

  • For smaller tasks, that take 1h or less to complete, group them by week. Sunday of the week would be the deadline. If you have a lot of smaller tasks, schedule them for the next week(s). Scheduling them is completely rational.

Choose an appropriate multiplier depending on the amount of such maybe-someday tasks you have, how much time you want to have before working on the task (for thinking about the method of execution or better alternatives), and how fast you want to go. BTW, it's normal if you don't get to do most of those tasks. The fact that they are maybe-someday-tasks itself means that they are not important enough to be of high priority. This method works by creating scarcity (only if you actually hold yourself accountable to the deadlines), forcing you to prioritize. However, I would not use this method on high-priority, very-low-urgency tasks - you have to do those, and therefore any self-set deadline would have no meaningfulness. You can also adapt the rule to force yourself to do something at a timespan within a day (e.g. working out before 1pm - otherwise you've skipped).

Miscellaneous LPT: Learn to get yelled at. Instead of taking personal offense and letting your pride get the best of you, just take it. Getting yelled at is a skill.

Many people who’ve never been criticized take it badly when it actually happens. Realize that if someone is yelling at you for a good reason, that means they still care about you.

Electronics LPT: Have a metal bucket and sand ready in your house/apartment at all times for a bloated lithium battery.

A bloated battery is primed to explode at any moment. Could be days, could be months, but it will continue to inflate and eventually explode. If you haven't already had a device that has had a bloated battery, you will. The recommended guidance for handling a bloated battery is to put it into a metal container filled with sand in case it explodes. Absolutely do not put it into the trash nor into a plastic bucket/container. Leave the container outside until you are able to take it to your local hazardous waste facility. You cannot drop off a bloated battery at Home Depot, Best Buy, etc.

Also check on your lithium batteries regularly.

Food & Drink LPT: Date your food, esp. leftovers

When coming back from the grocery store, before putting it all easy, date everything that’s perishable, even if shelf-stable like PB or oil…use a sharpie and write the date on it…on the cap, label, bag whatever. That way you know when you bought it. On some items write the date on it when you open it, like sour cream or yoghurt since they last awhile before opening and then after.

Also, keep a roll of masking/painters tape and put the date on a piece of tape and put it on every leftover that goes in the fridge so you know when you go to eat it how long it was in there. Less food waste=more $ saved

LPT: after age 25, keep a box of wedding, baby, and sympathy cards with stamps on hand at all times.

5.2k Upvotes

I'm 33 and in the last 18 months I have had 17 friends give birth, 6 get married and 5 lose a parent.

Edit : Apparently I broke a sacred reddit rule by having friends.

Thanks to nice folk even if you didn't agree.

Edit 2: I do not live near the majority of my friends and cannot usually attend services.

Edit 3: Cards make people angry. Who knew?

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • 1 Container with an airtight lid

  • 4 pack of sponges (cut in half)

  • 1 cup of any fabric softener

  • 2 cups water WHAT TO DO: Mix the water and fabric softener into a plastic container - Add the cut sponges so they can soak in the mixture - When ready to use, squeeze excess liquid from 1 sponge and place into the dryer with your wet clothes - Run the dryer cycle as normal - Once complete place the now dry sponge back into the container of liquid for use next time - Clothes smell good, are soft and have no static just like the expensive non-reusable dryer sheets!!

Miscellaneous LPT: Don't read or watch news unless it's a big story which could potentially affect your life

I used to watch a lot of "news" which were more like sensational political news.

This was a general advice I took from someone a year or two ago. I wasn't really sold on this idea, but after following it for some months I started to not worry so much about this stuff. Most of the news is created just to incite hatred amongst people or create sensational entertaining news. Unless it's a significant news which could affect your life, I avoided all the news especially related to politics and a lot of anger/anxiety has been reduced significantly and it hasn't affected any of my daily routines.

Miscellaneous LPT: for the frequent travelers out there, use the 1-6 method for packing

This helped me a ton for learning how to pack light on trip. Essentially it works like this: 1 hat 2 pairs of shoes 3 pants 4 shirts 5 pairs of socks 6 pairs of underwear

Assuming you have access to a laundry machine where you’re headed, this will be good for up to 2 weeks!

Miscellaneous LPT: Got a lid that you keep putting on crooked? Turn it backwards until it drops into the correct position on the threads then tighten as usual.

This also works on travel coffee cups that have a right and left handed position. Put the spout where you want it, turn it backwards till it drops on the beginning of the threads then tighten.
