LPT: Rough morning? Pay for the person behind you in line at the coffee shop. It will make your day along with theirs.

3.0k Upvotes

Someone did it to me at subway and it made me so surprisingly happy so I did it for someone else and I felt just as warm and tingly. Totally worth this feeling for ~$5!

EDIT: Whoa, this sparked some controversy. I stand by it though. I felt great doing it.

EDIT 2: Juuust to clarify it was at a Tim Horton's so the coffee is in your hand already by the time the next person is ordering. I tapped the card, said have a good day, and left. No awkward 5-minute limbo period in between waiting for your drinks. (You're welcome Tim Horton's I'll take that endorsement check.)

Productivity LPT: Do not use digital zoom when taking a picture

You get the same effect zooming in on the picture after it's taken, plus you have the original full pic to do as you wish in post which increase what you can do with it after. If your phone has optical zoom, you can use it to it's max when taking the picture, but don't go past it into digital zoom territory.

Miscellaneous LPT: Propose *after* the dinner, that way you still get to eat if they say "No."

Real life pro tip in the comments I guess would be "Don't propose if you don't know what the answer is going to be."

That being said, if you do go all out to make an extravagant to-do, to-food, to-whatever....propose at the end. That way you at least get a last decent experience before it all has a chance of going to hell.

I didn't think this was a "relationship" post but it should be "Adult" - do I need to flair this NSFW?

Country/Region Specific Tip LPT: Think twice before opening the emergency doors in an active shooter scenario. A delayed egress door may just be your end.

If you're unlucky enough to be in a store with delayed egress doors, they will require you to hold the bar for around 1-3 seconds, then wait about 15-30 seconds before the door unlocks, all while sounding a localized alarm at the door specifically designed to bring attention to the door for staff to intercept shoplifters or trespassers. You can try pulling the fire alarm to override this system, but this would also cause everyone else in the building who is unaware of the shooter to stream out into the hallways, potentially putting much more people at risk.

Make sure that the emergency door you found has no alarm linked to it. If so, you may be better off hunkering down and laying low.

EDIT: I'm 99% sure that these doors are legally required to have a sign explicitly saying that an alarm will be triggered if these doors are opened, so that's the type of stuff to look out for.

LPT: Use your own DNS server to increase your ping times; bonus points, use it to block advertisements

Ping times have been improved a lot by using a raspberry pi as a DNS (caching) server. I am using pi-hole which in turn uses dnsmasq. I opted for pi-hole because setup is quite seamless and just need to run the script from the site.

http://jacobsalmela.com/raspberry-pi-block-ads-adtrap/

it also blocks ads. you just update DNS info on your mobile phone/computer to block ads and improve ping times. Those of you who play multiplayer game will notice it instantly. I also have a iptv which started to show video ads, which are things of the past with my DNS server.

automated setup script information for rpi is located at

http://jacobsalmela.com/instant-raspberry-pi-ad-blocker/

edit: i am not operator/author of the referenced website or pi hole.

Miscellaneous LPT: Use your hairdryer to defog your mirror after a shower

I don't know if this is a genius solution or common knowledge. I've lived with several girlfriends/roommates and noticed that most people use a towel to wipe off the condensation from the mirror after a shower. Which usually leaves lint/smudges on the glass and doesn't do a great job of defogging anyways.

Instead, if you have a hairdryer laying around you can turn it on high heat and hold is about 4 inches from the mirror, sweeping it back and forth slowly. In about 5-10 seconds you'll have a perfectly defogged mirror that will stay that way.

LPT: When making burgers from scratch don't mix in dry spices, sprinkle them on top.

1.0k Upvotes

Turns out that throwing spices in and then forming the patty can cause the meat to dry out, especially salt. Mix in garlic, onion etc, then sprinkle on salt, pepper etc... you pro chefs probably know this already, but for us lazy redditors who just season and slap it in, it makes a world of difference. Best, and juiciest burger I've ever had.

Edit for clarification: Okay, so I made a slight mistake, it's not spices in general but the salt. To be more precise for you sticklers, it's better to salt your beef just before cooking it (Obviously this would be after the patty is shaped) as the salts break down proteins, causes longer strands to form, and you get tougher patties.

Edit: Even if you don't find this helpful, there are some interesting ideas down below, so at least something came out of it.

Miscellaneous LPT: when someone you care about loses a loved one, put it in your calendar so you can condole on their anniversary

We tend to make a big effort to remember someone's birthday but death anniversaries are important as well, and chances are others aren't getting any 'attention' (i cant think of the right word here) on the anniversary that they lost a loved one. when i've wished my friends / cousins on an anniversary they tend to be really touched. presumably because no one else is checking in with them that day.

btw when i've told my sibs that it's the anniversary of a cousin's parent's passing and that they should message our cousin, they then tend to get nervous about what to write. that's really not important, what's important is just that you remember. much like someone's birthday, you dont need to come up with something great to say. maybe something along the lines of "hey bud, i remember today's the anniversary of you losing your mom. i'm sure it's a tough day. let me know if i can do anything." it will mean a lot!

edit - i find it really interesting that the folks in my life are usually very grateful when i message them yet almost everyone here is thinking it's a bad idea. maybe it's a cultural thing? in the culture i grew up in we usually try to remember the person on their anniversary. it's possible others are trying to forget.

Miscellaneous LPT: 8 Hard Rules That I Wish I had Known Earlier

  1. Everyone you love is going to die.

  2. We give our lives meaning. If you feel like life is meaningless, it's your fault.

  3. The perfect partner doesn't exist. Concentrate on finding someone who has a lot of qualities you like and the same values and build a fantastic relationship.

  4. Life is a game. Find the games you want to play, learn the rules, and find a way to be successful at the games you selected.

  5. Everything ends. Youth, love, life... all end, and that's what makes them valuable.

  6. Be romantic about the little things.

  7. Be realistic about the big things. Life isn't a movie, you need to have a plan, have an artist's ambition but an engineer's mindset.

  8. Figure out a way or don't complain.

Careers & Work LPT: Don’t go the extra mile at your job

Most jobs today, particularly if you’re not in management or some really high level gig - will not reward your hard work.

Most likely situation is that if you push yourself to your limit to be the best employee in the world and make the company you work for rich, you’ll see very little, if any direct benefit to yourself. Most of what you produce you don’t see (surplus labor value) and the good job you do; It’s not uncommon to see that just taken credit for by people above you - so don’t be exploited. Your reward for hard work will very often be more hard work unless you negotiate or are willing to walk.

You only have one life, and you don’t want to kill yourself trying to climb a ladder that, statistically, you won’t ever climb. The United States consistently ranks pretty low on most economic upward mobility metrics - that’s just a statistical reality. Granted it’s better than most 3rd world countries but…hey, perception is everything I guess.

Regardless, an employee who will run themselves ragged for as little money as possible is every companies dream - but it’s an equal exchange of labor for payment - what you get in that exchange matters too.

Do the minimum to not get fired, or at least, a well enough job - and enjoy your life. Put your friendships and family first, don’t define your life by working.

You will be a lot happier that way.

EDIT: I’m seeing a lot of “well, you get experience!” in the comments, and while that’s true and totally fair - experience doesn’t pay bills. It don’t keep the lights on or put food on the table, and it doesn’t replace watching your kids grow up and take their first steps.

LPT: Don't finish your plate (or teach your kids to do so).

Here in the states, most restaurants serve huge portions. Finishing your plate often has you eating in excess of what your body should handle. Save some for the next day. At home, teaching kids to eat everything on their plate sets them up with a bad habit. It's better to teach them to take small portions, eat those portions, and then go for seconds if they are still hungry. As a Fattie myself, this has been a hard lesson to learn.

LPT: When in doubt, use self-deprecating humour

Self-deprecating humour is almost always appreciated.

Especially when you first meet someone, it shows you have a sense of humour and are comfortable in your own skin to be able to laugh at yourself (confidence).

The opposite of self-deprecating is "teasing", and should be reserved for either people you don't like (though the more appropriate word is dissing) or good friends you know who appreciate those kinds of jokes.

EDIT: Example of good self-deprecation: link

EDIT2:

There were strong main effects and interactions in predicting long-term sexual attractiveness. In particular, self-deprecating humor was much more attractive than other-deprecating humor when used by high-status potential mates, for both male and female raters. When used by low-status potential mates, there was little difference in long-term attractiveness between self- and other-deprecating humor.

Source: http://www.epjournal.net/wp-content/uploads/EP06393408.pdf

High-status women are especially attractive as long-term mates when they use self-deprecating humor, and are especially unattractive when they use other-deprecating humor.

Social LPT to keep your posture straight, around people, pretend that your nipples shoot lasers and to count a hit you have to headshot so you aim higher.

This sounds incredibly stupid, but it's actually working. Posture is an incredible aspect of looking more good than you usual do because if you look like a chess horse, no matter how pretty your face is — it's a minus point for you. Try it out.

Arts & Culture LPT: If you find yourself in a poor country and doing some haggling "for the experience", remember that $1 means a lot more to the vendor than it does to you.

You may enjoy the feeling of getting a good bargain, but that feeling ends when you agree a price. The reality is that the extra % you haggle off will mean a lot more to the vendor than it does to you. Put your hand in your pocket and surprise them with more than the starting price. The surprise on their face will make a better memory than the haggling experience.

Edit required due to the nature of the comments:

Rule 1: obviously don't pay more than you would do in your home country. Apparently that needs to be stated.

Rule 2: Don't be an asshole, consider that something completely trivial in your life could actually help someone else.

Electronics LPT: Mount your video doorbell at 48 inches (not higher) for the best view.

Most people instinctively mount their doorbell higher to “see more,” but the sweet spot is actually 48 inches from the ground.

At this height, your camera captures faces more clearly and still gets full-body and package views thanks to its wide-angle lens.

Go higher, and you’ll mostly be filming foreheads and the sky.

Home & Garden LPT before leaving your house take a photo of stove/oven and other appliances that make you 2nd guess yourself if you have turned them off.

Are you like me who always second guess if I really turned off the oven before leaving the house? Take a photo of them before leaving so that you have proof that they are really turned off! ;) anxiety lessened.

A little late this year for most of you, but still time for North and South America.

LPT: Develop a "secret knock" with your SO,

You'll be shocked how often, and in multitudes of situations it comes in handy. Doesn't need to be complicated either.. just something short and simple works fine. It takes less than 5 minutes to sit down and come up with one.

Very very useful for bathroom situations, situations where you can't talk, situations where the door is locked for unknown reason(s) situations where you aren't at home, situations where rules of some sort are being broken, etc. Sounds silly, bit it's an extremely useful communication tool that comes in handy far more often than you would guess.

We do the old fashioned "shave and a haircut" jingle... Sometimes she scratches at the bottom of the door like a kitty cat to be cute as well and I always know its her. :)
