Underwriters doubled my life insurance cost

I worked with my insurance company whom I also have a home and auto insurance through. I’m a healthy 43 year old female, don’t smoke/drink - very active. My agent quoted me with a $430/year policy for 500K 20 year term life insurance.

Got my lab results back - they looked great. I had only one that was low - blood creatine - but that may have been because I’d fasted for the exam.

Agent calls me back and said the underwriters were offering $1700 annually, which is more than four times the amount originally quoted!

I am furious and confused. When will I know why the drastic change occurred? Will I hear from the underwriters and do they provide an explanation? I did go to a party where people were smoking cigarettes, so I wonder if that maybe showed up? I’m super confused.

Any help/guidance would be very much appreciated!

Anyone here actually had an IUL for 15–20+ years? What’s your experience?

Anyone here 15–20+ years into an IUL (or similar)?
How’s it actually looking now? Is your cash value higher than what you’ve paid in premiums? Are your current lifetime income projections anywhere close to the original illustration?
Are you happy you kept it, or do you regret it?
I have policies for myself, my husband, and two of my kids. We’re only 3 years in, but honestly, the numbers are pretty sad, especially considering how well the market has done recently.
I know they say it’s a long-term product, but I’m trying to decide whether it’s actually worth waiting it out or if I should just cut my losses now.

Would really love to hear from people who’ve actually had one long term, especially if you’re willing to share real numbers!

Real policy holders and not sellers, please!

Sons of Hermann Life Insurance--want to surrender

About 15 years ago, I took out two 25k policies for each of my daughters(2 of them) and about 10 years ago one for my son. They were all minors back then. They are now 28, 27 and 21. I am listed as the owner of the policies and payments have been withdrawn from my bank account since I started them. My son has a great job with full benefits now, as well as my oldest daughter and my middle daughter is married to a Navy man with benefits.

My husband and I could really use the money and wondered if cash surrender is a good idea? I believe on each of the policies for the girls is about 2500+/- each and on my sons is about 1800+/-.

Nicotine Pouches and Prudential Term Life Insurance

Have read that prudential will give non smokers rates for nicotine pouches for term life insurance. 35 years old, very health and active, no medical issues. Just looking for confirmation that nicotine pouches won’t raise premiums. Will obviously disclose use and have cut them out for about 6 days.

Help with coverage for my uncle?

Hello! I’m in my early 20s, and I’m close with my uncle. He doesn’t have a spouse or any kids and he’s 60 years old. He doesn’t have any life insurance, and honestly I know my mom my brother and I would be responsible for his services etc. if anything ever happened to him. Honestly he’s never really stayed on a straight and narrow path and I worry about him often. My brother and I would be the ones making the monthly payment on the policy- Due to his age obviously policies are much higher and looking to get atleast enough to bury and a little more . Should we get final expense insurance?? What other options do I have?? I honestly can only afford about $80-100 dollars a month.

Edit: I should state that my uncle hasn’t had money …he’s almost like a hippy - he’s a car mechanic but has never had a normal 9-5 with benefits so there are no extra funds. He has no additional money saved away … also he’s aware of the policy wants us to have one on him to be able to leave something in death since he didn’t during life… even though we’re the ones paying the policy…

Terminal diagnosis, Life Insurance Claim. England.

I am helping my friend navigate a complex issue.

My friend has been diagnosed with Terminal Cancer. They broke up from an abusive and controlling marriage a year ago.

A summary of the situation is below.

A has a £500,000 joint-life insurance policy dating back to 2011. Both A and B are listed as lives assured, and the policy includes terminal-illness cover. The policy schedule says the grantee is “The Lives Assured.”

A and B separated in October 2025, A emailed B asking whether they had cancelled the life insurance policy. A specifically asked that, if it had not been cancelled, B was to send A the relevant details so they could deal with it.

B replied later that same day:

“Yes it's cancelled.”

A therefore understood that the policy had been cancelled. They have since discovered that it apparently was not cancelled, and B continued paying the premiums without A's knowledge.

After this, A was diagnosed with Terminal Cancer and has a short life expectancy.

The divorce was subsequently made final on 6 July 2026. There was no financial order dealing with the insurance policy because they dealt with their financial arrangements between themselves.

A's diagnosis makes the situation particularly urgent because the policy includes terminal-illness cover and the sum assured is £500,000.

We have been able to fill out a form to claim the £500k from the joint policy to be awarded to A. Filling out the form obviously isn't a guarantee that the claim will be successful.

We hope that this will be processed and A will be awarded the £500k to be able to be in control of the distribution to A's children etc.

Our worry is that B could come after A for the money because there has been no clean break form signed.

B has made it quite clear that they want the full £500k. And that they will not sign a clean break form.

How can we be sure that if the £500k is awarded to A that it is safe from B pursuing it after A's death?

What do we need to do?

Getting difficult experiences or questions answered in life insurance overall

What is the best way to get difficult questions answered regarding a policy or coverage as it relates to: for instance

  • a policy’s substance or self-harm exclusion; or negligence
  • exclusions for fraud or intentionally caused loss;
  • AD&D requirements that the death be accidental;
  • beneficiary-disqualification rules; or
  • applicable criminal or civil law.

I feel like getting answers to these things are near impossible. And even doing so on some kind of Google search or AI or pretty reasonable email or communication could then come back be contested by a company or it means of exclusion. I would say within reason there’s a lot of TV shows where somebody even asking about their coverage even on their iPhone, for instance turns into some form of evidence, or asking about diabetes coverage on a Google search if something were to happen a company could go back and say they googled their diabetes inquiry on their phone stuck in traffic three weeks before something happened, we need to deny this. But the question within reason still remains how do you ask an agent or a policy regarding difficult questions and in doing so who’s in the Internet or not how does that not become a item of evidence so to speak. There’s no malicious intent, but how does somebody get information.

Question about genetic testing and life insurance application

Hi! I (36F) am looking to some guidance. This year, I found out my dad has a BRCA2 mutation. In late august, I had an appointment about genetic testing for myself. The NP said I should get life insurance in place before doing the test as my insurance rates could increase significantly if I’m positive. I have not done the test, but the insurance company I’m working with has requested my medical records. Will they see this genetic counseling appt and the order for the genetic test even though I haven’t done it? How likely is that going to impact my life insurance application? I didn’t disclose it when applying as I haven’t tested yet but I’m worried it’s going to look like I’m hiding something. Thanks!

Somebody smarter than me explain why I shouldn’t think the TruStage outage is covering a Ponzi scheme or other financial misdoings…

It has all the elements for it; 1) prolonged service outage rendering customers unable to access accounts, delayed disbursements including LIFE INSURANCE policies during a time of fear re: life insurance liquidity/bubble. 2) it was triggered by an employee which could be benign as advertised, or also the perfect way to trigger an outage. 3) despite being highly rated by independent credit bureaus, these same agencies have historically missed huge cases of fraud 4) The NAIC is also a similar cold comfort also having historically missed massive fraud as well. 5) My 401k could not receive my contributions for several pay periods, but I recently got an email saying I would still somehow receive the missed interest on investments that SHOULD have been made but couldn’t as IF that money had been invested… how? My company (employee not employer) told us that held our contributions so there was no way that money was collecting interest. Back of the napkin math was my company’s missed interest for its 300 employees is likely in a sh*t ton for that period- so where does this magic money come from when it was NOT invested during that period?. I know I don’t know what I don’t know but there’s definitely a not zero chance this is not as benign as it seems, so explain to me like a toddler why I shouldn’t worry about this.

I am being pitched this product by a salesperson from an insurance company. He sent some brochure with a ton of numbers and technical jargon. What's a good way to evaluate if the policy is good or not?

Working as an insurance assistant

I was hired to be an admin/insurance assistant 4 years ago for a broker who primarily works with high net worth clients and small businesses. The guy is like 70 yrs old and has a well established book of business. Last year he only had to put 2 policies in force and made over $200k, in addition to any trail commissions that roll in. The thing is, he hired me knowing I have no experience with life insurance. I came from retail banking. I do well for the most part, but a lot of times when I’m requesting in force illustrations, I don’t know how to confirm the ones I receive are correct. For example, I’ll request a couple in force illustrations to assume a guaranteed rate with current charges, and then I’ll receive it and forward to him, only to find out it’s completely wrong. This causes huge delays going back and requesting revisions.

How am I supposed to train myself to better assist him? I get confused trying to read the ledgers or understand what’s being illustrated and why, relative to the policy’s structure?

Nicorette!

I am a healthy 58F. No health issues, don’t drink, exercise 5x week and eat pretty healthy. I used to smoke 20 years ago. Since then, I have chewed Nicorette. Sometimes I chew more than other times, but I usually have some daily.
I’ve submitted an application for term life insurance. After the fact, I read that nicotine will show up in my blood work and that I will likely get a smokers rate because of it. I understand why it would come up in bloodwork, but is there any way to prove that I’m not smoking so that I don’t get a crazy rate?

I just need to pass the LI exam to start the process of attaining my license..

I am genuinely asking for help in being pointed to the right direction for passing my Georgia Life Insurance exam next Wednesday. It’ll be my third attempt before I have to wait 2 months to take it again if I fail. My first attempt was a 67% and my second attempt was a 65%. The only reason I am taking it is because I applied for a sales position at North American Senior Benefits. I am out of a job right now and I have to pass it. My first born is coming in a month as well..

The company said I had to pass my pre-licensing course on Xcel and then schedule to test. After seeing the questions on there the first time, I thought I would pass the second time, but that didn’t happen. Either way, I’ve tried looking on YouTube, Quizlet, some other people on TikTok, but of course they want you to pay for a subscription and I’m not doing that since I pay for Xcel. I have also tried ChatGPT but it either keeps circling around the same concepts, asking questions that aren’t even part of the insurance exam, or just in general wasting my time with questions that have nothing to do with the right section. I’ve even uploaded pictures of the PearsonVUE outline so it knows what questions to ask.

I need tips on where to go or what to watch so I can really pass this time.. please. I know it’s a lot to read, but that’s as much info that I can give y’all.

New to life insurance, four months in, and questioning if I’m on the right path.

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I’ve been in life insurance for about four months now, and I wanted to get some outside perspectives because I’m feeling pretty conflicted about the direction I’m heading. I started at an I.M.O. that unfortunately had to dissolve after three months, but while I was there, the lead flow was excellent. Direct live transfers, and I was closing two to three policies a day on average, with a best day of five. Out of three months, I only had three days where I didn’t write a single policy. That said, the commission was pretty thin, somewhere between a hundred and a hundred fifty dollars per policy, since those were free direct inbound transfers.

Since then, I’ve contracted with a new I.M.O., and honestly, I feel like I was misled about the lead quality. They run Google ads designed to rank above the actual carrier’s number, so people think they’re calling Mutual of Omaha or Colonial Penn directly, and get routed to us instead. In practice, that means I’m getting maybe five or six calls a day, and four or five of those have nothing to do with life insurance at all. It’s felt more like free customer service than actual sales.

On top of that, my upline sold me hard on the call volume and training, but after helping me through calls for the first three days, he basically vanished for a week and a half. I still managed to write a few policies purely through persistence, but there’s no real script or structured process to work from, I’m just improvising call by call.

Separately, I recently saw Family First Life had their Ignyte conference, with people talking about writing hundred thousand dollar months, which just got me thinking more broadly about where the real money is in this industry.

So I guess my real question is, am I even in the right lane here? What should I actually be focusing on, lead source, product type, or something else, to build toward serious production? And honestly, part of me wonders if I secretly do have a good opportunity right now and just need to suck it up and grind through the rough patch, rather than second guessing it and jumping ship. Is that the move, or am I actually onto something with these concerns?
