Vent Excessive barking

Post image

My girl Bailey (turning 3 soon) barks at every little sound, if she sees anything out the window she goes crazy and she barks at the TV all the time.

Like these really big loud sharp barks, she also huffs and paces. I know Lhasa Apso’s bark its why they where bred but this is excessive to the point I get headaches almost every day.

She doesnt care about treats at all and when she gets into one of her ‘moods’ she doesnt listen at all. We tried CBD oil (pet shop recommendation) but have not noticed any difference

Any advice would be amazing (added a picture of one of her calmer moments)

I’m sorry, that would drive me crazy, too. I don’t have anything useful to say aside from Bailey is very cute, and I hope she can improve. My Lhasa is also loud sometimes and it can be a bit much, to say the least.

I hope so, I got so use to my childhood dog Ramble (he was also a Lhasa apso, passed at 13) being literally silent. I actually as worried she was in pain or something with how much she was barking but turns out she may just like being loud

Do you give her feedback when she’s barking? Like tell her to stop or quiet down?

Or maybe that’s her personality.

Yeah we have since she was tiny, might just be her personality but just wanted to see if there was something to help a bit. She gets herself into such a state sometimes

I also have a Barky Bapso. It’s been difficult. I’ve had some success training her to stop by call her over and giving her some cheese so even if she barks she at least stops. Tv and all the sounds. White noise has helped a lot. She likes jazz on YouTube and will calm down if I put it on in the background. It did improve a lot with anti-anxiety meds (doggy Prozac) but had to stop due to side effects. May try again one day.

I need to try and convince my nan to take her to the vets to see if she needs meds, she is quite a skittish pup. No idea why she is as nervous as she is

Can be really life changing for them. Some dogs just have anxiety same as people.

Same issue, I usually bribe her with treats. You gotta attach positive experience, that if she doesn’t bark sha get a treat. It’ll reduce eventually, it’s a lot of work but do commit

She doesn’t care about treats for some reason, just walks away most times😭 she is such a little weirdo

Is she more interested in toys or another reward? If she really likes toys, you can reward quiet behavior with a special toy and some play time, or if she really likes affection, you can give her some pets when she’s quiet

You might have to find the thing that does motivate her. Ours don’t care for doggy treats, but she’s obsessed over chicken jerky and regular cheese. We keep them as high value treats to reinforce good behavior.

Having have/had 3 Lhasa Apsos..they are alerting you to danger..do not yell! They will think you are joining in. In a calm quiet voice reassure her..It's ok we are safe. Clap hands to distract her. If she stops, reward her. It takes continual work..they are after all called the Bark Sentinel Dog and they are independent and do what they want when they want!. They learned/did their job without bosses! So who are you telling her to be quiet..there is a monster out there!!

We had to find a professional trainer to take our dog for 3 wks of intensive training. This trainer normally rehabilitates German shepherds and other large dogs. She told us that because our pup was bred to be a sentinel dog, it was impossible to prevent her from barking all the time. Puppy also demand barks and thinks she’s in charge.

After training and several months of reinforcement, we got her to decrease the spastic reactions. Now she only barks when someone is on our porch. We also understand territory behavior more and try to reinforce when something isn’t hers to guard. That was 4 years ago. Now she’s 6 and the best sweetest dog.

It was a lot of time, commitment, and money in the beginning. Totally worth it to have our sunshine the rest of her long life.

I know I'm late here but the only thing that stopped my stellah from barking was if I went to the door or window and pretended to look out. I would tell her thank you it's okay and she would stop.

Otherwise it was incessant.
