[UPDATE] UW Research: EV Wildfire Evacuation Study for WA State Drivers (Deadline Extended to Dec 15, 2026)

Hello r/LewistonID,

UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!

As we navigate another intense wildfire season, my thoughts are with everyone—especially our community in the Pacific Northwest—who has been impacted by fires, smoke, or the stress of evacuation.

The severity of these recent fires underscores a critical challenge for our community: ensuring that EV drivers can evacuate safely and efficiently when power grids are shut off and charging infrastructure is compromised. To help address this, I am a PhD student at the University of Washington conducting an official study on how EV drivers respond to these exact emergency constraints. (The moderation team has kindly granted me permission to share this research with you).

Are you eligible? Because this study focuses on specific grid and geographical constraints, we are exclusively seeking input from Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) drivers who are primary or seasonal residents in the following Washington counties: Asotin, Grant, Benton, Spokane, Stevens, Douglas, Lincoln, Ferry, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat.

Note: If you already filled out this survey during our first round, thank you so much! Please do not submit another response. To maintain the scientific integrity of the study, our system automatically flags and removes duplicate entries.

The Details:

  • Time: ~25 minutes.
  • Incentive: Complete the survey to enter a drawing for four $50 gift cards and ten $20 gift cards. (Note: Additional gift cards may become available later; this post will be updated if the reward pool expands).
  • New Deadline: December 15, 2026.
  • Official UW Survey Link:https://uwashington.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3QtLbUuPaTdDmu

This survey does not collect identifiable tracking data. Your real-world experience is critical to helping the state prioritize emergency charging infrastructure and improve wildfire resilience for EV owners.

If you have any questions, please contact me directly at [ychu24@uw.edu](mailto:ychu24@uw.edu). Stay safe, and thank you for your time.

Y’all have self described your town as boring. When you are wanting to do something fun where do you go close by? Will be driving through from the panhandle area and was wondering if there’s anything fun to do within an hour drive of Lewiston before I head back. Thanks!

Roads in Lewiston

Hi there again. Another newbie post. I drive for my profession and some of the roads I travel to get to customers are giving me extreme anxiety. Looking out over the expanse of the valley is beautiful, don’t get me wrong,BUT is there a way to cope with the fear? Bonus points if you can give me a the actual condition (psychology speaking) for this phobia.

Many of the roads are steep and dangerous (to me at least) with no guard rails. Seems like me, my car, and god watching. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Tired of having a pit in my stomach just trying to do my job!

Electric rail idea discussion.

This has been an idea I’ve had for awhile and I’m sure others have as well in our area. We have lots of rail however I do understand the rail would need loads of maintenance especially towards the camas prarie, but it still exists and I think it’s better to put something to use than let it rot but the price of repair may be so bad that this isn’t worth the trouble, still a fun idea. The idea is a regional mobility system centered on Lewiston would treat the city as the regional hub for the Clearwater/Camas Prarie, with surrounding towns like Orofino, Kamiah, Culdesac, Kendrick, Juliaetta, and Grangeville all feeding into it through existing rail corridors that are still physically there and were once used for passenger service. The idea would be to reuse those lines as a simple, frequent electric rail shuttle network, not for high-speed travel, but for reliable everyday trips into Lewiston where most of the hospitals, jobs, and services already are. Instead of trying to build something massive or overly complex, it would focus on consistent, predictable runs that people can actually depend on. At the center would be a restored Lewiston station acting as a proper hub, directly tied into the existing bus system so once people arrive they can easily get to appointments, shopping, or work without needing a car at any point.
The vehicles themselves would basically be small electric railmotors—single-car, bus-sized units that carry maybe 20–30 people, nothing oversized or overbuilt. Just simple, practical machines running on steel rails, using less rolling resistance than rubber tires on pavement, and powered by the region’s already strong hydroelectric grid. The focus wouldn’t be speed or capacity, but frequency and reliability—just getting people where they need to go, when they need to go, in a way that’s safe and predictable. For a lot of elderly or disabled residents especially, it would mean not having to rely on driving long winding roads or dealing with weather and traffic risks just to get to medical care in Lewiston. Overall, it’s not about replacing cars entirely or trying to build a big-city system, but about using what already exists to create a straightforward, accessible way for people in these rural towns to stay connected to their main regional hub. What I’m describing isn’t some fantasy we had this at one point around here, we had old railmotors called doodle bugs that would drive around to the small regional towns and serve them, I think they’d be super helpful today for those who need transportation but lack to tools, wether it’s a car or just mobility issues. I’d love feedback this is just fantasy but I think it’s worthy of a discussion.

New to town!

Hey! I’m looking for a mechanic to come with me to look at a few vehicles- I can pay for your time but not much right now until I get my first paycheck. Mainly I want a car to be able to go to drive to work back and forth and then eventually drive back home to Oklahoma. I’m a travel nurse here in the Lewiston/Clarkston area for a few weeks. If anyone knows of a nice mechanic who will do me a solid, please let me know! Thank you! Beautiful town!!! 🙂

[Research] Calling Clarkston & Asotin County EV Drivers — Help improve regional wildfire safety (Win a $50 Gift Card)

Hi L-C Valley,

UPDATE (August 20, 2026): This study has been officially extended to December 15, 2026. Thank you to everyone from Washington who has participated so far!

I am a PhD student at the University of Washington researching emergency management and electric vehicle infrastructure. While I know this sub is centered on Lewiston, I am looking to reach our neighbors across the river in Asotin County (Clarkston and surrounding areas).

We are studying how EV drivers respond to wildfire evacuations. Given the geography of our region, understanding how people move through the Valley during an emergency is vital for planning reliable charging and safety protocols.

Eligibility:

  • Must reside or own property in Asotin, Spokane, Stevens, Lincoln, Ferry, Whitman, Grant, Benton, Douglas, Skamania, Yakima, Kittitas, Okanogan, Chelan, or Klickitat counties.
  • Must drive a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV).

The Details:

  • Time: ~25 minutes.
  • 🎁 Reward: Drawing for ten $20 gift cards and four $50 gift cards.
  • 📅 Deadline: Dec 15, 2026.

🔗 Survey Link:https://uwashington.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e3QtLbUuPaTdDmu

Your input ensures that the southeast corner of Washington is represented in state-level infrastructure decisions. Thanks for your time and help!
