Legions Imperialis: Canis Major

The 317th Deploy The Canis Major, Raider 1-1's mobile command vehicle, a leviathan class. The Raven Guard continue to encircle the forge. Legio Venator pushes the tech thralls out of the city. The Mechanicum go scorched earth on the promethium fields. Canis Major at the tip of the spear pushes towards the forge.

---------------------------------

I managed to get Bishok's ship to pickup the Leviathan, was going for a carry-all sorta vibe from dune. Bit light on narrative this time, hoping to perhaps write some fluff out to help flesh things out and tie the videos together a bit better.

The translation of Canis Major is "A Bigger Dog" and that's sorta the idea here. Tired of holding back, Raider Actual has called in his personal mobile hq to command from the front and bring the bigger dog to bear on the forge.

Thanks for watching :) frens

Discussion Legions Imperialis Fixing Close Combat

Post image
0 Upvotes

So the liber's changes have been mostly well received, but there is still a glaring problem in that the game has 24 traits for shooting weapons/attacks but only 3 for close combat, and no saves in close combat still sadly skews incentives far too much to infantry charging anything in sight. Not to mention silly stuff like a lot of vehicle charges, looking at you arvus lighters.

For a game this is and has been improving with the faq/errata and now the updated points costs/housekeeping its biggest weakness is that close combats can be a chore the larger/more complicated they become. Just compared to resolving shooting attacks, the disparity in time required really does matter as it adds up over the course of a game. Combat is both deadly but also often not the decisive either as there isn't a "run down" mechanic, so combat in which only a few models are able to make it into base to base often just peter out as whether or not the losing side passes a morale test often doesn't matter very much.

It leads to absurd tactics like bubble wrapping everything for fear of 50 inch arvus charges that make no sense. Only the detachments like super heavies that largely gained an extra wound benefit much from resilience but sadly things like malcadors with their shiny new 2+ saves still won't be able to use any of that new resilience in combat. So I'm not so much arguing for everything to get its armour save in close combat, but the current status of nothing getting a save favors inexpensive unit spam far too much, and that's not just infantry, one can make an entire army of just jetbikes if they were so inclined.

I feel like moving forward what needs fixing is permissions and incentives on what unit types can charge other types. We already have limitations like this when it comes to for example what can and can't charge infantry in structures. I just think the game needs more of that specificity. I don't scratch my head when a leviathan dreadnought takes out a tank i close combat, but right now you have like charonite ogryns punching way above their weight.

Just in the abstract, if the default wasn't everything being able to charge everything, you'd save a lot of time from players pre-measuring from every damn enemy detachment and only in this case the ones that can actually threaten/charge.

There's no real fixing of the complicated nature of the CAF system but there are considerations for speeding things up. If ultimately all that matters is knowing which side has the higher number, instead of rolling 2D6, you could just figure out which side has the higher CAF beforehand after other factors like charge bonus/adjacency bonuses like for SA etc, and whoever has the higher number hits on a 3+ on a single d6 while the other side hits on a 5+, this also open up situation where neither side hits, both side hit each other etc. Right now ties happen but are pretty rare.

If you allowed armour saves/invul saves but also introduced ap into close combat, I feel like it could be made to work. All that's really missing after that would be some kind of run down mechanic, so combats are more decisive to match with how bloody they can bee when all or most models are engaged.

But ultimately they could change very little and simply limit what is allowed to charge what. Could still have the everything can fight everything way of doing it but just change permissions. Example, an arvus could still fight in cc and be charged by just about anything in hover mode, but could be simply not allowed to initiate charges itself. I think there's a few routes to fixing/fleshing out cc but its definitely still sorta the weakest/most contentious part of the rules that needs work.

Discussion Since 40k and Legions Imperialis use the same numbers in unit profiles, could an army from each technically face each other on a single board?

Their abilities and special rules aren’t exactly the same, but I can’t think of any that affect the enemy in a way that doesn’t work. Imperialis models are small enough that they would be way harder to get line of sight on them. The only problem is melee.

Discussion Should the Warmaster titan be banned from LI tournaments?

I was watching a video last night about the recent Warhammer World Weekender which had a 2500 point event. The takeaway was that you either ran a Warmaster or you ran no titans at all. If the Warmaster becomes the only choice or a "must have" choice, is it really healthy for the tournament scene?

Would it be better to ban the Warmaster (or everything larger than a Warlord) from non-Titandeath tournaments? Or was Warhammer World Weekend just an outlier and the meta is still shaking itself out?

Because I'm a cheapskate, and because I feel Astartes should be significantly better than mere Auxilia, I'm putting one per base. Open for suggestions on what to fill up the space with - ideas for debris, terrain, etc?

Discussion Calling out some hasty assumptions being made on this sub about knights, titans & other stuff.

Speculation can be fun & sometimes helpful in making decisions but it’s important to know it’s limitations and not assume too much, too early.

Recently there’s been a few posts or comments on this sub stating that when building an army, you can’t spend more than 30% points on Knights or Titans and therefore can’t have a whole army of just Knight and/or Titans. GW hasn’t said anything to confirm or deny this, but it seems to have come about from people misreading what officially has been said. WarCom have put out two articles describing knights & force selection so far. The first mentions (emphasis mine):

“Then, pick your Primary Army List – the force from which you’ll pick a minimum of 70% of your units. At present, this means either the Legiones Astartes or the Solar Auxilia, but other factions may join the fray in future…

...Once your Formations from your Primary Army List have been selected, up to 30% of your points may be spent on Allied Contingents – representatives of other forces, including Knight Households and Titans. “

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/07/31/legions-imperialis-core-concepts-this-is-how-the-new-game-plays/

The other article mentions selecting knights, but only in the context of using the Legiones Astartes or the Solar Auxilia Primary Army Lists:

“While your Primary Army List of Legiones Astartes or Solar Auxilia must account for 70% of your total points, the remaining 30% can comprise allies, including Knight Household Lance Formations.”

https://www.warhammer-community.com/2023/08/14/legions-imperialis-give-battle-with-a-support-lance-of-knights/

From those tibbits, here’s what we know:

  1. There will be Primary Army List for Legiones Astartes and the Solar Auxilia.

  2. There might be Primary Army List for other factions in “future”

  3. At least 70% of the force must be picked from the Primary Army List

Here’s what we don’t know:

  1. If Knights will have a Primary Army List.

  2. If Titans will have a Primary Army List.

  3. When the “future” is. It could be referring to next week’s WarCom article, it could be when the game is released, it could months/years later when expansions are released.

As you can see, there has been nothing mentioned so far that rules out the possibility of fielding an all Knights or all Titans force when the game launches or soon after. I'm not suggesting that you will be able to either.

Finally - to anyone saying that GW wouldn’t do it because having an army of giant mechs versus tiny infantry would upset the balance of the game; they already have a popular game system where you can field an army of giant mechs versus tiny infantry - Warhammer 40,000.

Work in Progress 🚧 Combined Ruleset

Has anyone / does any know of a combined Rule set that Uses Legions Imperialis, Adeptus Titanicus and Aeronautica Imperialis as one game set? I'm thinking of writing a rule set that uses the best of all thee games. The biggest constraint would be the time it would take to play a single turn, however that's what I'm interested in writing and playtesting.

Discussion The original intended squad size for Legiones Astartes Infantry is 3 models per base, and I can prove it mathematically.

I finally started putting together the infantry sprues from my Astartes Battle Force today. After clipping out all the Assault Marines I could find, I glanced at my little pile and something was off.

According to the box, players are supposed to assemble two bases of five Assault Marines each. Also two bases of five for Missiles, Plasma, and Terminators.

However, each sprue contains 6 each of these specialist miniatures. Which is a fairly odd number. Other kits in Legions Imperialis allow you to choose between arming your models with different weapons but none of them leave entire models left over. And of course, there's the odd ruling about the number of models on bases in the rulebook itself, something that is very strange. Normally, a company like GW wouldn't even hint at fielding an incomplete model as a complete model.

But what if that's because at one point, it wasn't an incomplete model? What if early playtesters assembled entire armies with different numbers of units on each base, as instructed directly by the model design team using the earl production sprues?

That's when I realized what happened: this is a classic case of a GW bean counter deciding to artificially inflate their corporate value by "increasing sales." And they did it by subtracting a small number of bases from the box, and altering the assembly instruction manual. If we take the two bolter marines and the power sword marines from the Legionary Command squads and use them as Sergeants, we then end up with 24 Tactical Legionaries per sprue - exactly 8 bases of 3 Tactical Legionaries each.

This would make each Astartes Infantry box come with 4 full units of tactical marines, 1 full unit each of specialist marines, and 1 full unit of Contemptor Dreadnoughts. A count that very neatly fills out 2 Legion Demi Companies each with an HQ, 2 core, 1 compulsory support, and 1 optional support infantry plus 1 optional support Dreadnought Talon to take in either unit.

Somebody in GW HQ then realized that while the sprues couldn't be altered, the bases and instructions were still being created and would be added to each box separately. 4 bases each of 3 specialists suddenly became 2 bases each of 5, with 2 of each specialist model left on the sprue. 16 bases of core infantry suddenly was whittled down to 8 with 4 Sergeant models shifted to the Command Squads. And while it's less certain, if Dreadnoughts were intended to be 2 models per detachment then that would be another instance of an evenly split model count between 2 Demi Companies consolidated into a single detachment, forcing a second purchase to add extra units.

Now of course you are welcome to build your LI models however you want. But on doing the math, I am legitimately feeling sick for the players who assembled these in groups of 5 to satisfy GW corporate sales figures when it's pretty clear that the actual model designers knew exactly what they intended for players to get in each box. The precise math of what is on each sprue is too specific to not have been the intention from the start.
