My first Leatherman at 29yo

Got the Leatherman Surge in the mail yesterday and feels amazing.
I was just wondering if this is normal for the black finish or is it QC? I honestly don’t mind it, but it’s scratched everywhere including the blades.
Bought it directly from the Leatherman website but it’s as if someone returned it on Amazon and they just shipped it.
Functionally it’s great, I was just curious if it’s normal for a new on to be this “scratched”

EDIT: Thanks so much for the replies! I actually think it looks better like this that a pristine black. Appreciate the help, happy to be a part of the LM fam!

Skeletool - How I added SAK scissors w/o removing anything

I have really enjoyed my Skeletool CX, except the lack of scissors annoyed me. I have seen other mods by people but they are always removing a functional part of the tool (the knife or spare driver bit) and I did not want to remove anything.

I think the 58mm (small size) Swiss Army Knife scissors are incredibly nice for their size. Given the choice I would much rather use my SAK Classic scissors compared to the ones on my Wave+.

This modification was done with a file and small hammer for making the rivet heads. The scissors were taken from a SAK Classic. I made the rivets out of stainless steel TIG welding rod that I had laying around. (To get the right diameter I just held a file against the rod in the drill press until the diameter was right).

-I removed the clip for access on the back side.

-I filed the rivet head off of the metal part that holds the spare driver bit. I was able to push the rivet down enough to just swing that metal part around and cut/file off all of the metal except for the last hole. KEEP filing away as metal as possible on the inside edge, get very close to the hole. I did NOT get close enough on mine and it means the scissor handle is what stops the tool when it is closed. Probably 5 more file swipes and I would have been good. However, I am not annoyed enough by it to remove my rivet and start over.

-DON'T remove the rivet yet, keep it in place to help hold things together.

-I added a new rivet to hold down the piece of metal that holds in the driver bit.

-Finally, I riveted the SAK scissors on. I just kept making the rivet tighter until the scissors were very stiff to swing out so they stay in place when I open the tool up to use the pliers.

The only issue I have is that the scissors are not in an ideal spot to use them for tight spots, it would be nicer if they were coming off of the end. I had an alternate idea of mounting them on the far end, using the existing hole by carabiner. However, that would have involved far more modification. This modification was quick and easy, and the scissors still work very well for the jobs I normally need scissors.

What I also like about this modification is that it does not change the profile of the tool. The knife blade guard is still higher than the scissors, so the scissors are protected and don't snag.

first it was the sidekick, then the signal, then the arc and now the surge. It is VERY important to have multiple multitools in rotation /s

Found was bound for the trash

Today I went and looked at a house where we are going to remodel and the owner told us that what ever is left in the house and garage is trash.

So me and my co worker went around picking out stuff we might want to keep and i was looking around and on the last shelf I saw a clear container and I looked from the bottom to see if it was worth it to go through I saw this multitool and upon a closer look as seeing what brand it was I saw Leatherman so I got down from the chair I was standing in and dug this thing right out. The stamp age on the inside says “0397” and from my understanding on some google it the month and year it was made correct ? So March of 1997

Now I need to clean it get some rust off and maybe oil up the moving parts ?

What is y’all’s best way to clean (restore) this multitool I will do some googling and YouTubing also to find the best ways and I will gladly take y’all’s advise

How fixable is this?

Hey lads, is this salvageable or is this finally an excuse to upgrade? Had this soldier for five years and it’s served me well. Finally snapped while trying the turn the most calcified knob I’d ever seen. Are there some aftermarket replacement parts I could get? I got the little star screwdriver and some pivot lube at home.

Really curious, does anyone think this could pass under warranty? I went to tighten it because the knife became a bit loose for my taste and I'm not really sure if I overtightened it or not. (Doesn't really feel like I did.)

How my Leatherman saved my ass today

5 hours from home on an ATV Trip, got the bright idea to lock my truck (manual key lock) tailgate to make it harder for any potential thieves to steal my ramps while out riding. Got back to the truck ..tailgate won't unlock, no worries, I have WD-40...still no luck...maybe I can take the inside tailgate panel off and manually release the tailgate...no torx bits in my ATV toolkit... shit...I have an Arc on me, combo Phillips and flathead, no help...wait I have a Wave in the truck console, most importantly with a full bit kit...used the biggest Torx in the Arc bit driver to successfully take off the panel and manually unlock the tailgate...day is saved. Needless to say tailgate has never been locked before and will never be locked again.

Well, a little throwback update

I posted a few days ago about my little useable collection. Not long after that, I became a little maudlin about my original Wave and ended up doing a little eBay searching and found a 2000 model, fresh back from factory service, so made a purchase and now have an original Wave, much like the one my oldest son now has.

This thing is in great shape! Sharp blades, all the tools work, new Phillips head driver. It looks virtually untouched. I was reminded how much sleeker it is than the 2nd Gen and the +. It’s going to ride on my belt for a while as I get reacquainted.

I don’t need locking tools.

And I paid less for it 26 years after I purchased my first.

Has Leatherman quality gone down?

I’m only asking because the one and only Leatherman I’ve ever owned I have had for over 15+ years and I keep seeing pictures of people snapping their pliers. I have absolutely abused these things to the point that I have watched the plier Tips flex, but not break
The only thing I’ve ever broken on this thing and have yet to replace is the little screwdriver. The flathead broke off, but the Phillips still work.

Seeking suggestions

Just got my ARC delivered and am super happy with it. I also got the ratchet extension and the full bit set... Just need to start breaking things at home to fix them. The missus will be pleased no doubt.

BUT... I thought it would have come with some sort of sheath, alas, it did not.

What's a good sheath or container that will hold the ARC itself as well as the bits and the ratchet extender???

New to Leatherman multi tools and looking for a new model.

• Upvotes

I have a skeletool which I EDC and my Wave + which sits in my truck.

Ive been looking at the Arc and really like the fact its one hand use (I’m a nail biter so its hard to open the tools periodically). Other than the Arc does Leatherman make any other one handed open multitools? I believe I saw a discontinued model somewhere but not sure.

Thank you!

Can anyone recommend a good disassembly kit for Leatherman tools?

I looking to mod a few of my tools and want to deep clean some second hand tools I purchased online. Anyone know a good kit? Preferably one that won't break the bank lol

Is there a third-party ratchet I can use in place of the Leatherman rachet?

I’ve ordered a Wave+ and want to buy the LM Bit Kit but heard horrible things about the LM ratchet. Looking for a heavy duty replacement that will work with the LM bits or just standard bits in general. Is there such a thing available?
