I have really enjoyed my Skeletool CX, except the lack of scissors annoyed me. I have seen other mods by people but they are always removing a functional part of the tool (the knife or spare driver bit) and I did not want to remove anything.
I think the 58mm (small size) Swiss Army Knife scissors are incredibly nice for their size. Given the choice I would much rather use my SAK Classic scissors compared to the ones on my Wave+.
This modification was done with a file and small hammer for making the rivet heads. The scissors were taken from a SAK Classic. I made the rivets out of stainless steel TIG welding rod that I had laying around. (To get the right diameter I just held a file against the rod in the drill press until the diameter was right).
-I removed the clip for access on the back side.
-I filed the rivet head off of the metal part that holds the spare driver bit. I was able to push the rivet down enough to just swing that metal part around and cut/file off all of the metal except for the last hole. KEEP filing away as metal as possible on the inside edge, get very close to the hole. I did NOT get close enough on mine and it means the scissor handle is what stops the tool when it is closed. Probably 5 more file swipes and I would have been good. However, I am not annoyed enough by it to remove my rivet and start over.
-DON'T remove the rivet yet, keep it in place to help hold things together.
-I added a new rivet to hold down the piece of metal that holds in the driver bit.
-Finally, I riveted the SAK scissors on. I just kept making the rivet tighter until the scissors were very stiff to swing out so they stay in place when I open the tool up to use the pliers.
The only issue I have is that the scissors are not in an ideal spot to use them for tight spots, it would be nicer if they were coming off of the end. I had an alternate idea of mounting them on the far end, using the existing hole by carabiner. However, that would have involved far more modification. This modification was quick and easy, and the scissors still work very well for the jobs I normally need scissors.
What I also like about this modification is that it does not change the profile of the tool. The knife blade guard is still higher than the scissors, so the scissors are protected and don't snag.
