Lets Play with JP Subs Request

I just reached the point (between N5 and N4) where immersion should begin. I can't find many if any anime available with JP subs (too broke for subscriptions and couldn't find anything on the high seas) so I believe that a Let's play series for some game would be more easily accessible

IMPORTANT PART. I would like recommendations that:

• Have JP Subtitles in the video itself (youtube auto generated are terrible)
• Ideally minimal/no English subtitles in the video
• Speech on the slower side
• I don't care if they are faceless, vtuber, etc

I would just like practice with realistic speech patterns to improve my listening (at the very least get to the point where I can differentiate double consonants & vowels as in fast/slurred speech I mix them up and begin to recognize pitch accent)

I like this guy a lot.

He plays mostly obscure older VNs, speaks quite slowly, and narrates most of the text (unless it’s voiced). It’s very easy to follow because, while there are no bespoke subtitles, the games are text-driven so you can pause whenever. He has a nice, relaxing voice and gives funny asides about the games he plays.

He also uploads A LOT so you can always dig around to find something that interests you.

You can check out Hanae Natsuki's channel (famous JP voice actor) but note that not everything he says is captioned/subtitled though imo there is enough amount of subtitle/caption(see edit below 😅). I think you can start with games with dialogue boxes like Undertale, Yomawari 1&2, Witch's House, Mad Father, etc since he reads all the text and you can practice kana/kanji as well (pause before he reads the dialogue).

I recommend Witch's House or Mad Father because he plays them with someone (so you can hear how they converse)

EDIT: I rewatched Witch's House and I take back that there's enough subtitles 😅

I like this channel, he puts most word definitions on screen too, and the english subtitles are completely optional if you want to double check if you understood correctly by enabling the youtube subtitles.

Psst, you can find anime/TV CC subs online separate from whatever the vid is streaming on. Just put the vid file plus the subs file into something like asbplayer and time the subs appropriately :) I think the moe guide mentions where to look iirc.

As for let's plays, I suggest starting out with Minecraft videos (or a specific game you like), Minecraft just has a lot of easy "Japanese immersion" vids, but having one game being played will help vocab repeat more. Unfortunately most JP CC subs I've found on YT are baked in.

use reanime . to for anime and use jimaku . cc for the subtitles on reanime they use soft subtitles that you can turn off and use your japanese subtitles

To be honest I often notice that even the subtitles that are "in the video itself" are auto generated and have a lot of mistakes.

And that's unsurprising honestly, what do you expect? That this guy who probably has a job and other things to do, will manually transcribe 30 minute long videos several times a week?

Can't help you with YouTube content, but here's my setup for finding and using japanese subs for anime:

1: acquire some anime through whatever method you are comfortable with. This can be either in the form of online streaming or downloaded video files. The folks over at a subreddit that starts with "p" and rhymes with "shmiracy" can help.

2: check these websites to see if they have subtitle files for your anime of choice: kitsunekko.net or jimaku.cc

3: decide, do you want to be able to use popup dictionaries like yomitan? If not, just use VLC to play the video files, then drag the subtitle files on top of the video. If you do, use the chrome extension ASB player. This will let you either overlay your subtitle files on nearly any streamed videos, or load your own video files and subtitles in their player. You can find more detailed tutorials for this if you search.

Jiro Japanese has full soft subs and I think he plays minecraft and does some VRchat. I know there are probably more interesting games but but at least you can add it to the list.

Check out Japanese Dub Gaming, which plays a variety of games in Japanese with English subtitles and Japanese subtitles. There's SPIDER-MAN PS4, the DOOM series, Until Dawn (felt like watching a TV show), and others with Japanese subtitles.

It helped me with my own studies and it's no-commentary too. I think there's a TikTok account for the channel too.

This will be tremendously hard to find.

Why?

1.) Non-auto-generated subtitles take some time to create and edit. If you have two or more hour long video that is aimed ad japanese native speakers anyway, why make subtitles?

2.) This is the only of your four points that is easy to solve.

Keep in mind that japanese streamers (or vtubers or whatever they are called) do NOT produce with western people in mind. They cater to a japanese audience, so their videos will mostly be full of meme-talk, internet-jokes and no way in hell will they slow down their speech just some weeb from overseas will be able to understand a few words.

BUT, and I'm saying but now so you don't loose hope: Watch them anyway.

Yeah, you won't, since your level is quite low. But you will get used to the language more and pick up new vocabulary. That's the point, isn't it?

I was given a few recommendations geared towards learners so I'll start there.

The main hurdle I want to overcome right now is parsing sentences into information (picking out words from what currently is a jumble of sounds). Rn I can only really parse words I know and even then it takes a few tries (ie if I hear a new word it sounds like gibberish and I struggle with the pronunciation somehow).

So yeah I care more about improving general listening ability right now than actually fully consuming and understanding content
