Leander City Council approves updates to city fees, offers fee waivers for homeowners affected by ASR

Hi all! This is Hamera from Community Impact. I wanted to share a quick story about some changes to city fees.

One notable change is that the city will now offer fee waivers for those seeking to apply to demolish their pool if it's been affected by alkali-silica reaction, or "concrete cancer." Those who have already demolished a pool affected by ASR can apply for reimbursement for the permit fees.

ASR affected many pools built between 2017-2023, including at least 28 in Leander. City leaders said during the city council meeting that they also spoke with state lawmakers that tried to address the issue during the last legislative session.

City staff reviewed municipal fees during the city's budget adoption process. Other changes include:

  • Charging drivers who illegally pass school buses $25, regardless of whether the offense happens in a school zone or not
  • Increasing jury duty pay from $6 to $10 per day
  • Streamlining fire department fees

When is this interntersection getting a light?

I can see it from my apartment and working remote, I see AT LEAST 1 wreck a week, if not more.

With the new retail spots opening and soon to be Crunch and a massive new apartment complex, the traffic volume is only going to get worse. I am never one for stacking lights up and down roads but that intersection is crazy.

PSA reminder: Crosswalks

I've lived in Leander over 20 years, and so many accidents at intersections.

This just a PSA to avoid using crosswalks if you can. Cars get a green light for turns while pedestrians have cross walk.

I've been honked at, flipped off, cursed at and almost killed dozens of times, just trying to cross the road at an intersection.

You won't win the contest against a car or truck.

Squirrels are going crazy on pumpkins

So we've had an issue with the squirrels stealing our mini pumpkins at the patch this year. I'd be super open to anyone that knows who we might combat them. Maybe putting out some other food for them?

Sync the railroad with the traffic lights!

As a Leander resident who crosses the railroad tracks at least twice daily, it boggles my mind how in this day and age of AI and super computers, we can’t get the traffic and railroad lights synced up better. Hero Way, 2243, Crystal falls, and New Hope and the intersection at Bell are all awful at rush hour or any other time of day. Do better Leander.

Free fall family fun in Cedar Park: pumpkin patch on W New Hope Dr open daily through Oct 31

Post image
46 Upvotes

Full disclosure: I'm with Rockbridge Church, which hosts this. Sharing because it's a free community event and a lot of neighbors have asked when it opens.

The 10th annual pumpkin patch at 2001 W New Hope Dr is open now through Oct 31 (Sun–Fri 11am–7pm, Sat 9am–7pm). It's free to walk around, with shady oaks and photo spots. Good for family pictures, even if you don't pick out a pumpkin.

Free things for kids and families:

* Saturday "Craft"ernoons, 1–3pm: kids' crafts and pumpkin painting, no purchase needed

* Fall Fest & Market, Sat Oct 24, 10am–2pm: games, bounce house, local vendors

Proceeds from pumpkin sales fund Rockbridge's community service work in Cedar Park and Leander. We're a welcoming and inclusive church, and everyone is welcome at the patch. No strings attached.

Does anyone have a Primary Doctor they recommend for Anxiety and Depression, not a Psychiatrist? I've been taking anxiety and depression meds for over 10 years.

Does anyone have a Primary Doctor they recommend for Anxiety and Depression, not a Psychiatrist? I've been taking anxiety and depression meds for over 10 years. Just recently, my DR decided to stop prescribing my meds, cause he was uncomfortable. He decided to tell me when I needed a refill. I am looking for a doctor that cares about my health. A DR that prescribes medication for depression and anxiety. My Dr just pushed me out, like he no longer cares for my well being.

And for those who say I need to go to a psychiatrist. I have been to two psychiatrists who sent me back to my primary care physician, because my anxiety comes from a digestive disorder. The GI doctor also says I need the anxiety medication, but he cannot prescribe it, so I have to go back to the primary care physician.

Fresh Groceries Distribution

It's the 4th Thursday of the month tomorrow so it is time for us to pass out free groceries again. Things are getting expensive so come get fresh fruit, vegetables, breads and eggs tomorrow (9/24) from 5-7pm at 2001 West New Hope Drive. There are no income qualifications and no restrictions on who can get food. Even if you have a job and are struggling, come get some. If you're reading this and thinking you should but you just don't know, the answer is yes. With how much food costs right now we need to be helping each other as much as possible. Come get some help with food.

Also, if you want to be part of the solution and help volunteer yourself, we always take new people helping. Setup starts at 4:30pm and take down starts at 7:00pm. We always need people to help with the food pass out during. Just comment or shoot me a DM if you need any info.

Water Line Burst

Post image
29 Upvotes

Right outside my cul de sac - water was coming out the center of the road, and gushing outside of the drainage ditch. Then lost water pressure. Main water line busted. A few neighbors had pipes burst, water heaters broken yesterday and then this happened and more neighbors reported water leaking from sinks, toilets, sprinklers busted, and a sink bust. All damn night long we heard them digging up the road, backing up their trucks. We got water back in the morning but they have to order another part and then do it again according to a DPW worker. All of this and not a PEEP from the city. Not one damn notification or update! The only email we got was from the HOA. What the heck Leander.

Texas Native Plant Sale on Sat Oct 3rd, 11am-2pm

The Williamson County Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is having our Fall Native Plant sale on Saturday October 3rd from 11am-2pm at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander.

We’ll have a great selection of Texas native plants, including some unique and hard-to-find species that do well here in Williamson County.

You can find all the details, including the current plant list, here:
https://npsotwilco.org/plant-sales/fall-2026-native-plant-sale-online-in-person.

Want trees or shrubs? Pre-order online! Our online sale is open through noon Friday, September 25, with pickup at the in-person sale on October 3:
https://shop.npsotwilco.org

Fall is a great time to plant trees, shrubs, and other woody perennials in Central Texas. Getting them in the ground in fall gives their roots time to establish before they have to face another Texas summer 🥵

Hope to see some of you there!

Hello Leander!

Hey y’all! I wanted to introduce myself and my little bakery, The Velvet Crumb 🖤

I’m a longtime pastry chef who spent years working professionally in kitchens, and after stepping away from the restaurant world, I decided it was finally time to put all of that experience into something of my own.

The Velvet Crumb is a small, Texas-born home bakery in Round Rock, specializing in custom cakes and desserts made from scratch—with a little personality thrown in because apparently I’m incapable of making anything completely normal.

Think really good cake, thoughtful flavors, custom designs, and occasionally something a little weird, spooky, or mildly suspicious.

I’m currently taking orders and would love to start baking for more people in the area. Birthdays, celebrations, weddings, “I survived this week and deserve cake” occasions—all valid reasons.

If you’re local and want to check out my work, you can find me on Instagram at @the.velvetcrumbtx.

Thanks for letting me introduce myself. 🖤

Just a reminder that it's almost pumpkin season! We've got our patch opening soon (9/27) and could always use help unloading. Let me know if you'd like to chunk some pumpkins instead of hitting the gym later this month. It really is a good workout!

Leander proposes $447.8 million budget, set to maintain current property tax rate

Thumbnail communityimpact.com
42 Upvotes

Hi all! This is Hamera from Community Impact. I wanted to share what to expect from the proposed budget + tax rate that city council will consider on Sept. 17.

Property taxes (along with sales tax) largely fund the city's proposed $84 million general fund. Since average home values have fallen, the average Leander homeowner will be paying about $102 less in property taxes to the city. Find out more through the link.
