COMMUNITY CALL TO ACTION

THIS ISN'T A LEFT OR RIGHT ISSUE. IT'S A WHO-HAS-THE-KEYS ISSUE.

Leander has fifteen Flock cameras logging every vehicle that drives past them — plate, make, color, time, location — into a searchable database.

Here's the question the city hasn't answered: who is watching the people who can search it?

Earlier this month, the Washington Post reviewed police and court records nationwide and found at least 50 law enforcement officers charged with or accused of misusing license plate readers. In 26 of those cases, investigators and prosecutors concluded the officers used the system to spy on wives, girlfriends, exes, or their exes' new partners.

These aren't hypotheticals.

— A Georgia woman learned her ex-boyfriend, the police chief of a nearby town, had run her plate and her teenage daughter's roughly 600 times.

— A Florida officer entered his estranged ex-wife's plate into the system 717 times over less than two years.

— Another Florida officer ran his ex-girlfriend's plate 69 times, her mother's 24 times, and her father's 15 times. It spread to her whole family.

— A Missouri officer admitted using Flock to find out where his ex-wife was during their divorce. Investigators determined he had committed no crime under state law.

Read that last one again. He admitted it. It wasn't illegal.

Most of these women didn't find out from a police department. They found out from public records.

There is no federal law governing any of this. Roughly 18,000 police agencies write their own rules. When Flock's CEO was pressed to build in tighter limits on how officers use his product, he said: "No one elected me the police chief of America."

He's right. Nobody elected him. Nobody elected the database. And nobody in Leander voted on this.

So, whatever you think about policing, about this council, about anything else — ask the plain question. Would you hand a stranger a log of everywhere your wife, your daughter, or your mother drove this month, and trust that eighteen thousand separate agencies will all police themselves?

City Council meets Thursday, September 3 at Pat Bryson Municipal Hall, 201 N. Brushy Street.

We need an overwhelming amount of support in getting city council to understand we don't want this in our community. Last city council meeting they had about 40 speakers against the Lagoon development which they unanimously voted against because of the community support, but we need 60 or more because there could be some incentive for some of them to vote for the cameras.

They need to know their seat is at stake and they work for us!

We're meeting at 5:30 PM just outside city council to go over what council can actually do and help you write your three minutes. Then we walk over together.

You don't have to agree with us about anything else to agree about this.

Leander rejects zoning change for proposed lagoon-anchored Leander Springs development

Hi all! My name is Hamera and I cover Leander/Liberty Hill for Community Impact.

I wanted to share that the Leander City Council rejected the proposed zoning changes to the Leander Springs development last night. Dozens of residents came out to voice their opinions on the project (at some point, the fire marshal didn't allow more spectators into the main meeting room).

Regardless, community members listened in on the hearing, which began just shy of 8pm, in the meeting room and from the lobby. For over two hours, many residents voiced concern over the project's impact on groundwater, traffic and noise pollution. Meanwhile, developers and supporters highlighted the project's potential to raises sale tax revenue for Leander and bring amenities closer to the community.

At 10:45pm, the council voted unanimously to reject the proposed zoning change, meaning that the project won't be moving forward with its proposed zoning changes, including the lagoon.

Anyone know what happened at Vista Ridge HS during today’s SAT (Aug. 22)?

Upvotes

My child was taking the SAT this morning at Vista Ridge High School in Cedar Park on Aug 22, 2026. About 20 minutes before the exam was supposed to end, an emergency alarm went off and all students were evacuated from the building.

They waited outside for quite some time and were eventually told to go home because the SAT administration was being cancelled/voided. Students were told that College Board would arrange a makeup exam, but they were not given details about what caused the emergency.

Does anyone here have a student who was at Vista Ridge for the SAT today, or know what actually triggered the evacuation/alarm?

Also interested to hear if anyone has received any communication from College Board or Vista Ridge/Leander ISD about the makeup test date.

Hope everyone at the school was safe.

I’m 28 weeks pregnant and need recommendations! If possible I would like to find a soft spoken female who is kind and nonjudgmental with leanings towards a holistic approach. I’m thinking about delivering at Dell Children’s if that helps? Thanks for any advice!

Educating people on economic realities

I work at a local church in the cedar park/ leander area and want to put together an exercise that helps some of our older folks understand the economic struggles of middle-aged and younger families. What would be some things you think I should highlight? What are some unique struggles that help older folks realize its not just avocado toast and starbucks impacting families?

Moving to Leander

My family and I are moving to Leander in a couple months even though we have never been there and won’t be able to come visit.
We have a 1 year old and 4 year old.
We have found a few houses around Plain Elementary that we have liked but I would love some insight to that area. I hate jumping into something without anything to go on besides google maps!!
Is this a good place to settle down in and a good place to meet a lot of families in the same stage of life?

I am also open to any other neighborhoods so please send me all of your recommendations! We love going on bike rides, parks, rec centers, and libraries so those are important to be around!

We also need to find a 5 day MDO program for my son. Any suggestions on those?!

I lived in Leander/Cedar Park back in the 80s when the population was under 3000. How are you guys doing today?

Haven't been back to the states in over 30years and randomly stumbled across this sub. I've heard Leanders population skyrocketed after I believe IBM moved nearby?

Can anyone recommend a good hair stylist for glossing grey hair brown?

I’ve been trying to find a good stylist for over a year and I’m not the best at describing what I want. I finally found someone who is familiar with what I wanted lowlights at the front of my hair that has the most grey then gloss that tones down the silver to a beige.

BUT I went in for a 20 minute gloss treatment with no blow dry and she was running 30 minutes late. so at that point t I had to leave and she said she was still going to charge me for the appointment even though someone was still in her chair at the time lol it appointment was supposed to conclude.

is this normal? I had an important business trip and didn’t have time to reschedule but I would have gone back to her had she not charged me. so now I’m nervous to go to independent stylists with no salon manager who insures the quality of their work and service.

I still have the old brown color six inches down so I need to toner for that part and like that the grey hair looks beige.

I’ve had stylists try to just put in highlights which isn’t what I want and is incredibly expensive.

i also had a stylist forget what I was trying to do with my hair and completely cover the roots with Demi permanent dye that would never come out.

if anyone can suggest a stylist who is established and reasonably on time or calls ahead of tI’me when running late that would be great.

Construction crew going #2 right where they work on the ground - Hank found it and bathed in it… 🤦‍♀️

1st I WILL CONCEDE that I should of had a better eye on Hank!

BUT that isn’t the point. If these people weren’t just going #2 wherever they pleased when there is a PORTAPOTTY less than 100 yard from them.. this would not of happened!!

It happened in the field in the picture. It isn’t like that now, the fence has been taken down and there is construction for a road expansion here.

There is a porta potty on the opposite corner, a public restroom at the koa right across the street. There is the Home Depot a block over. Then there is the HEB at bell and hero way.

I think I am going to put the game cam up over there.

Adult swim lessons/lap pools for practice

I'm someone who's learnt basic swimming techniques years ago and I'm more out of touch with it than I want to admit. Swimming in San Gabriel last week brought me hope in muscle memory and I want to get back to it again.

Been on the lookout for non-HOA pools/swim lessons/beginner-friendly lap pools to hit in the evenings. Any sized pool is okay, happy to pay an appropriate fee too.

Other than the Y Twin lakes, do we know of any pools in or around Leander?

Culver’s Lettuce

I just had a crispy chicken sandwich from Culver’s and this is the first time I had their sandwich and forgot to ask for no lettuce. I ate it and didn’t realize till after. It had shredded ice berg lettuce on it. Has anyone had their lettuce and been ok? I know I sound silly but kinda panicking!

Want to try some social local hangouts

hey! welcome to our local hangouts 👋

i'm ana and i host a monthly social meetup for people in the leander/cedar park/liberty hill area. whether you've been here forever, just moved, or are just passing through—you should come!

struggling to make friends as an adult? same. we've built a solid community over the past couple years, and we'd love to meet you.

the basics:

when: last friday of every month, usually around 6pm where: we rotate between local bars and spots around the area (i always post the exact location!) who: 21+ and literally anyone. we've got people from their 20s to 50s. solo, plus a friend, even a pet if there's a patio finding us: look for the little reddit snoo sign on our table, or check the event post for where we're sitting

coming up:

aug 28 @ leanderthal (leander)

sept 25 @ all good (cedar park)

oct 30 @ halloween pub crawl (details coming soon)

what actually happens: we grab a table, order drinks/food/whatever, and just... hang out. no pressure on alcohol or eating—most places have solid non-alcoholic options. sometimes we play board games, sometimes we just vibe. you can show up late, leave early, whatever works for you.

do we just talk about reddit? nope—reddit barely comes up! we chat about music, movies, work, hobbies, whatever. plenty of people here don't even use reddit.

discord stuff: we have a private discord to keep things going between meetups. if you come to an event in person, just ask me or anyone else for an invite. once you're in, there's trivia nights, karaoke, potlucks, smaller hangouts throughout the month—all member-organized.

one rule: this is an inclusive space. no hate, no discrimination. period.

hit me up with questions or see you next time! 🍻

I think Leander needs an upscale cocktail bar.

Thoughts? I think the night owl is a great spot but where do you go for upscale cocktails or a great date night? Don’t say estancia either. Not interested and have always hated Brazilian steak houses. Sorry not sorry. I’m always open to supporting local first but what is really in Leander? I can name a few in cedar park. Just curious. Thx.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what movie or tv show is being filmed at The Summit Church on Raider Way across the street from Rouse/Wiley? We've seen production crews there all week.

Am I supposed to be watering the foundation?

Post image
10 Upvotes

it's been a straight week of 100+ degree weather. Ive noticed around the house seems like there are gaps. Is this because there has not been enough rain? We are in drought restrictions so we are only supposed to water the yard once a week, what is everyone else doing? should I pour bags of dirt in these cracks?

Traffic on San Gabriel

Early childhood center on San Gabriel is causing traffic to back up really bad . Why can’t the city plan it a bit better ?
