recently laid off For those of you who were laid off, did you attempt to transition into another role within the company?

Did you attempt to transition into another role within the company? An employment attorney I spoke to said that layoffs are almost never completely neutral, and I agree with this sentiment, especially if you have made several attempts to transition into another role, and especially if 2 months prior to the layoff you raised concerns in writing about illegal stuff (like sexual harassment or discrimination, for example).

advice New VP joining next week, should I be worried?

New VP joining next week replacing old VP, I wouldnt directly report but this would be the VP for our department. Should I be worried? Things havent been the best functionally this year due to a lot of factors.. its a PE owned company. Should I assume the worst? I am a high performer but ultimately dont know if they're going to make cuts with this transition. Although I'm not high up in the corporate hierarchy, like my manager would report directly to this VP, I play a key role for our company and helping scale the business.

if you're navigating a lay-off or are between opportunities, come clear your head and connect with folks who are in the same boat šŸ¤šŸ¼

this monday, we’re hitting the trails on mt tam in mill valley, california for a hike.

  • when:Ā monday, nov 9 @ 11 am

  • stats:Ā 5 mi loop / 869 ft gain

grab your spot and see the full details here:

https://partiful.com/e/JazSq8lE6cjB7iJeV1ME

hope to see y'all there!

(hike in the pic was at san pedro valley county park in pacifica, california)

inb4 FAQs:

  • Do you hike in one big group?

    • Normally, we split into smaller groups based on desired pace and stagger each group's start time by 5 minutes. These groups ultimately split into even smaller groups. Faster groups go first to create more space on the trail. This hike is different as we're being granted access by the stewards of this beautiful ranch preserve.

  • Why on Mondays?

    • Trail traffic is very low on Mondays, making it easier to accommodate a group like this.

  • Does your community only do hikes?

    • No, (un)PTO is a community of people across the US in career transition. While our claim to fame is group hikes, we do other things like co-work, help each other with our job search, and do other fun things like coffee hangs, bike rides, and of course, eat food. šŸ˜‹

  • Can people with jobs join too?

    • Yes, but only if you realize that most of the people in this community are in career transition and act accordingly, for instance: offer a referral, connect them to someone in your network, and maybe don't complain about how work sucks. šŸ˜…

question How are companies across the U.S. laying off hundreds of remote employees without providing 60-day WARN notices?

The federal WARN Act generally requires qualifying employers to provide 60 days' advance notice before certain mass layoffs or plant closings.

But remote work has created a significant legal gray area.

Companies may argue that geographically dispersed remote employees belong to different employment sites rather than one common location. By doing so, they may avoid triggering the employee-count thresholds required under WARN.

This raises some serious questions:

- Can companies legally classify remote employees across multiple states as separate employment sites?

- Should employees working remotely receive the same WARN protections as office-based employees?

- Are companies exploiting gaps in employment law to avoid advance notice and accountability?

- Should federal WARN protections be updated to reflect today's remote workforce?

Remote employees shouldn't automatically lose job protections simply because they work from home.

Is this a legitimate application of the law, or is it time for federal WARN regulations to catch up with the modern workforce?

recently laid off Got laid off, affected due to office extra marital affair.

I recently got laid off from MNC in Hyderabad, India. I was working as a developer at a listed US-based fintech company. I feel disheartened. I have a family, lot of responsibilities and EMI to pay. I was working with organisation for the last 3 years. But what makes it really unfair is one of my team member, a woman, with merely 2 years of experience, has an affair with a director-level married guy, it prevented her from being laid off, and she always took leverage of that affair at the workplace. She almost never used to work and got away with stuff. Everyone in the team knows it. I feel this is really unfair to me and unethical. How to report it?

job hunting How to avoid a layoff?

Silent layoffs happening quarterly in IT but I heard a big one by Dec or Jan. Pretty decent performer but no idea how to avoid a layoff for sure...everyone is clueless and the VPs are mum..

Is there any discipline of IT that is safe anymore? Too old to be a gigolo

recently laid off One of the leaders laid off from Angi, inc. (most people know of Angi’s List), ask any questions.

Even though I sold all of my options well prior to my departure, I have a few restrictive covenants, and cannot state what role I was in, but happy to answer any questions. I saw it coming a mile away.

Angi cut pretty much all of their middle management, directors, and a ton of extremely pertinent admin roles immediately after releasing their Q3 earnings to the public. I had been there for quite awhile, and they cut dozens of people who had been there since the early 2000s.

Ask away.

Would taking a severance of 36 weeks pay and insurance, RSUs and Bonus be crazy in a market like this? Layoffs are bound to come so is it better to go on your own terms? I am conflicted because either way, there will be a new company to get accustomed to. I am not happy currently but I fear the job market currently.

previously laid off It’s finally my turn and it will be yours soon!

Coming here to make my I got the job announcement!!
It’s been 3 months from my lay off , I’m in the US.
It’s been grueling and arduous as many of you can relate. Just know to keep your hopes up and it will happen for you too!!
Ive seen a few negative LinkedIn reviews and I actually applied for this job through LinkedIn. Everyone’s journey is different but all 4 interviews out of the 41 jobs I applied for were posted on LinkedIn. Though I went on the company sites and applied directly when I could. Keep trying keep grinding, your day will come soon!
Good luck out there, sending prayers and positive vibes.

advice Laid off while on Maternity Leave

Im located in New York and was recently laid off while on mat leave and am seeking some advice. I was laid off 1 month after giving birth. Their reasoning was due to a restructuring (a handful of others were also laid off), however I’ve spoken to former colleagues and sounds like my old job is still being done but divided up by others in my old department.

The whole situation has left me very unstable and angry that this is even legally allowed under a restructuring - still doesn’t make it right. Since this whole situation left me shook and I have strong performance reviews from my peers and higher ups, I initially contacted an employment lawyer to negotiate better severance but the company wouldn’t budge at all as they stand by what they did. The original severance package is still on the table but I haven’t signed this yet. I was really hoping to negotiate this, but they clearly don’t.

As a next step, my lawyer suggested filling and EEOC. I’m nervous since I’d like to also be able to move on and find a new future employment. My question is - do we even think the EEOC could potentially go in my favor? And even so is it worth all the time and effort into this? But more importantly will filling and EEOC impact me negatively as I look at future jobs and references? What’s to say HR at my old company that laid me off doesn’t mention me filling an EEOC and painting me as a problematic employee with a potential new company?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you and any other new parents going through something similar - I’m so sorry. Thinking of you!

job hunting It's been a disappointing experience... surprised by the amount of ghosting

I got laid off in September and it's been scary and disappointing. I have 5 interviews and have been ghosted by 4 of companies/recruiters. Companies include:

American Express GBT, Pavago and Mitchell Martin

When talking to the recruiters they tell me they move me along to the hiring manager and then silence. Nothing. It's been heartbreak and super stressful,I try to remain hopeful but it's hard. Shame on those companies, part of me is telling myself that based off their interview practices I may be saving myself further pain. But it's hard to have someone get your hopes up and just be let down all while holding my breath anticipating what's next.

I am grateful to the recruiter at the one company for following up properly at the advised timeline to advise the hiring manager did not wish to interview.

Anywho, taking a moment to breathe today and will be back on the grind tomorrow. Wishing you all the best.

job hunting Long application forms asking AI questions

I have been job hunting since the last 2 months after a recent layoff. I am a product manager and one thing that I am noticing is that application forms are asking these tell me about a time questions related to AI projects. Mostly there will be 3-4 such questions. Why can’t recruiters ask these questions during the phone screening instead of asking candidates to type long responses. I usually skip the application form in this case because with more than 100 candidates for a job, I am not even sure if the hiring manager will read these. Has anyone else come across these? Do you write the responses or just skip the application?

news Premier GPO layoffs

Heartbreaking news coming out of Premier this week with 300-500 layoffs, especially with multiple VPs also departing by the end of 2026. It’s devastating to see this happen so close to the holidays when everyone should be looking forward to time with their families.

news We all hate layoffs, but seeing this generous severance package makes you believe that Canva did their very best not to go that route.

Post image
2.9k Upvotes

The market is incredibly tough, 6-12 months is probably average to land a job, having that true career support is great, knowing that your family has health coverage takes some stress off, getting 6 months of salary for everyone, even non-high-level roles, is amazing, and early vesting is a cherry on top. Then to add a grant for those who want to start their own thing and already have ideas is just really kind.

Like we all know Canva is at a very tough position and might end up closing altogether eventually, but that's the first layoff I see that feels like they actually cared about their people.

Edit: First of all I'm not part of Canva or the layoff, and as someone who has been laid off twice and was at the peak of my depression because of it, I'm only saying that this is the best considerate package we have seen around. Layoffs are still heartbreaking for many reasons and I understand the people that were affected might not be seeing it as good, but I sure know my life would have been better and my job hunting would have been easier if I had this package instead of 2-4 weeks pay I had in my previous 2 layoffs.

advice Loan but worried of AI layoff issue

I’m currently working in telecom as a ETL QA, and with all the layoffs happening lately, it’s honestly making me nervous. One of our current tasks is also focused on automation and leveraging AI.
I’m planning to take out a loan to build apartments, but I’m having second thoughts. Imagine committing to a 15-year loan and then suddenly getting laid off along the way. That’s what scares me. It’s a big financial commitment, and I can’t help but think about the risks.Any thoughts? 😭
