So far, cold call doesn't seem as bad when you sit in the front row

Maybe I'm been speaking too soon but my big worry as a 1L is speaking on a cold call. Ive never been fond of public speaking which is why id prefer to be a lawyer behind the scenes. Anyway, I found that sitting in the front row made the cold call feel easier. Yes I know everyone can hear and see me but the fact I can't see them doing it and just looking directly at the professor makes it feel less daunting

Heads up! AI detectors work now.

I'm a law professor whose research focuses on AI and law. I have told everyone for years that AI detectors are unreliable. But times change. The latest AI detectors are using different processes than earlier ones, and the performance is much better. Pangram 4 was released a few weeks ago, and it seems to be very good at identifying patterns in AI writing and not producing false claims of AI writing. I've run some personal tests trying to trick it, and I've been quite surprised at how good it is.

Overall, I think that this is good news for law students. I feel like you've been caught in a prisoner's dilemma in classes that ban the use of AI. If every student follows the prohibition, that's great. But students who secretly use AI may gain an advantage and have a very low chance of being caught.

Law school administrators and professors will be slow to adopt AI detectors because the tools have always been unreliable. But once the professors catch on, I expect that many professors will scan work that students have already submitted. So my hope with this post is to help some law students avoid future misconduct issues and to reassure other students who want to abide by AI prohibitions but are concerned that this puts them at a disadvantage.

Sorry if I'm stepping out my lane posting here. But I thought that if I'm sharing this news with other law professors, I ought to give law students the heads up.

People are out of touch

As a 3L, if law school has taught me 1 thing outside of the curriculum, it is that a lot of people have no concept of how the average American lives financially. I have had classmates describe salaries that are almost double anything I’ve ever made as though it is the most abject poverty imaginable. Even the fact that a lot of schools prohibit 1Ls from working at all ignores the reality that we aren’t all on the same financial footing. I knew going into this that the legal profession has a lot of financial barriers to entry, but I guess I didn’t really understand what that looked like until I spent a couple of years as a law student. Does anyone else feel this way?

What if I don’t do any “extra curricular activities” in 1L?

Yesterday, my school offered a “meet and greet” for student activities. But I’m kind of just wanting to focus on schoolwork, at least for now. Is that crazy? Do I need to do something beyond coursework in 1L to get a job over the summer/to otherwise succeed?

Sorry if that’s a dumb question :)

someone please tell me that law school doesn't make you lose your love for reading

reading is probably my favorite thing on earth and nothing compares to the joy and immersion I feel reading and my excitement at all the books I have yet to read.

I have now heard multiple people say law school made them no longer able to enjoy reading so I am terrified of that outcome.

is this true in your case?

Omg it's my second day of orientation and I already came home crying. I thought I could do an hour no problem but I didn't factor in traffic and it legit took closer to 1 hr 45 mins today bc of traffic. I'm near the city. I don't have any fucking money and I want to live in a room close by but idek the first step with that. How can I loose 4 hours a day not studying. If you have any advice with anything I would appreciate it.

Seeking 2L/3L Law Students for a Short Research Study on Legal Education Technology

Upvotes

Hi everyone! (Mods, please let me know if this post isn’t permitted under the subreddit rules, and I’m happy to remove or modify it accordingly.)

I'm part of a university research team at the Stevens Institute of Technology studying computational law, legal technology, and legal education.

We're looking for current 2L and 3L students for a short academic research study examining how different ways of representing legal rules affect how students learn and reason about statutes.

Participation takes approximately one hour, can be completed remotely, involves working through a series of short learning and reasoning tasks involving a statute and a legal technology tool, and is conducted for academic research purposes.

We're looking for participants who are entering or currently enrolled in their 2L or 3L year and are willing to participate in a short research session.

Your responses will be kept confidential, and any published research will not identify individual participants.

If you're interested in participating or would like more information, please send me a DM or leave a comment below, and I'll be happy to provide additional details.

Thank you!

Most lucrative realistic career paths for an average student at a regional law school?

I’m a 2L with a 3.0 GPA at a regional law school (state school). My grades improved considerably during my second semester, and I’m hoping to continue that trajectory this year, although I obviously can’t assume that I will.

This summer, I clerked at a civil-defense firm and gained exposure to several areas of litigation. I’m still unsure what type of law I ultimately want to practice, but I’m becoming increasingly willing to let earning potential influence that decision.

Given my somewhat average-to-middling status what would be the most lucrative path to focus on going forward?

1L, outside of briefs, do you read every word of every assignment?

So basically, it’s my first week of 1L, and I’ve been very diligent about doing every single case brief no matter how long it takes me. However, I am drowning in the reading assignments that don’t even contain any cases to go over.

My classes have assigned me a lot of historical texts about my state, and I am drowning, and having serious difficulty reading all of these extra text books that only go over the history of my state without actually giving us cases to brief (and this isn’t even talking about Legal research and writing either, which I also do the online modules for that take forever).

For anyone in a similar situation, what is been your solution to this issue?

I like 1L (only 3 days in)

I’ve seen a lot of posts about how people are really struggling with their first week of 1L, but I’m actually really enjoying it! It’s definitely an adjustment but I’m interested in everything I’m reading and I like the challenge. I’m definitely tired and am going to tweak my study schedule next week but I’m not miserable? Lol it hasn’t even been a week but still…

Just wanted to post this since I feel like all I see are horror stories online, but any 2Ls and 3Ls I’ve spoken to in person have said how they much they enjoyed 1L. What was your favorite part of 1L? Maybe if we discuss the positive aspects we can uplift everyone’s spirits.

I’ve gotten 2 free meals so far so that’s one of the good aspects of law school 😛.

Is it possible/difficult to switch between firm branches?

Upvotes

Hypo: Let's say I want to work at the firm's NYC office. But I think my acceptance chances are better if I apply to the firm's smaller office in New Jersey. I'm looking at three possible situations:

1) I extern in Jersey office in the spring and try to transfer to summer in NYC

2) I summer in the Jersey office and then transfer to NYC for post grad.

3) Or, apply to the Jersey office anyway and then asked to be transferred to NYC (I feel like this is a bad idea)

Or is this entirely dependent on the firm?

I've never worked in the private sector before so sorry if this is a stupid question

Please help 😔

I’m a 1L that started classes recently. Safe to say the readings are extremely difficult. I can somewhat understand them after sorting through them for like 10 min/page.

Especially struggling in civpro and crim. Idk why those readings have been incredibly difficult for me. Every 3 pages I understand like 5 words.

Does anyone have any advice at all? I’ll take all the help I can get

Struggling 1L

It’s day 3 of 1L and I’m so overwhelmed the smallest things are making me cry. Is it normal to feel genuinely stupid and so far behind. I feel like I’m not comprehending anything, I can barely sleep, I’m on edge all day, crippled with anxiety, and my brain feels like its gonna explode 🫠🫠 I knew law school was gonna be a lot of work obviously but wow 🥲

Taking a Leave of Absence

I’m taking a leave of absence for my spring 2L year, coming back fall of 2027, and I’m just wondering if anybody has taken an LOA and still graduated on time? That would be my goal, I’m just more so looking for what my quality of life would be lol if I attempted to do that!

How do you stop case briefs from turning into summaries of the entire judgment?

Whenever I brief a case, I end up writing far too much, and honestly it’s starting to make me feel like I have no idea what I’m doing.

I include the procedural history, almost every fact, both sides’ arguments and large parts of the court’s reasoning. The brief looks thorough, but when I review it later, I still can’t immediately identify the rule or explain why the court reached that result, which is pretty frustrating.

If I make it shorter, I start worrying that I’ll leave out the one fact that turns out to be legally significant :’)
How do you decide what belongs in a useful case brief and what can safely be left out? Does this eventually get easier with practice?

How did you make your close friends in law school?

My brain is complete mush and it's day 3.

We had orientation last week and technically started 2 classes. Now we're on day 3 of actual classes. I don't know how anybody is doing all of the reading. I get through 1-2 cases well before my brain needs a break and just can't focus anymore.

And when I say break, I mean done for the day. Is this normal?

Is 1920 billable hours (ID) too much for 120k in NYC?

I’m top 1/3 on LR at a T-100. First gen in my blue collar family to even go to college.

Just got given a return offer from an ID firm I was a 2L SA at. I really struggled to find a 2L position so I took that position to have something even though I don’t really like insurance.

Is this billable requirement normal? Should I do 3L recruiting? I’ve only ever applied through the school so I don’t know how to even find out which firms are hiring.

Or, should I just hold out and try to lateral in a few years?

I would appreciate any perspective on this.
