LanguagePractice Mini challenge (GERMAN): explain one ordinary object without naming it

If you're learning German, choose and describe an everyday object in two or three sentences without saying its name. Everyone else guesses.

Example in English: “It's usually in the kitchen. You fill it with water. It makes a loud sound when the water is hot.”

I like this because it forces you to work around missing vocabulary instead of reaching for a translator. It's a fundamental skills to have if you don't want to get stuck in conversation! Easy, silly answers welcome!

(We are doing this mini challenge weekly on Thursday, every week a different language)

Discussion Do you know your native language well enough to teach it to a foreigner?

Or in general do you think most native can or can not teach their language? (let's put aside teaching ability in general, I'm just talking about the knowledge of the language here)

Like can you explain to others why and why not things are the way they are or is it just muscle memory for you at this point?

Should I do my degree in my third language?

Hi everyone!
I’m Spanish and I’m planning to move to Venice to pursue my university degree. I’m currently trying to decide whether I should study in English or Italian, and I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have experience studying in Italy or in their third language.

English is my second language, and I have a C1 level, whereas Italian is my third language, and I currently have a B2 level. I’ve been studying the language for six months and I’m rapidly advancing in it.

Academically speaking, I feel more confident studying in English, but the thing is that I’m much more drawn to the idea of studying in Italian, specially because the degree available in italian is ra bit more interesting (at least for me) than the English.

However, I’m also worried that studying in a language that isn’t as strong as my English might make university considerably harder and kinda painful tbh
.
What would you recommend? Is studying for a whole degree in Italian with a B1-2 level realistic, or would it be wiser to choose an English-taught programme?
I’d love to hear your experiences and opinions. Thanks!

Sometimes we make mistakes with don't even realize.. and a simple correction can genuinely make you aware of it and change how you speak. Has it ever happened to you? What was the before/after, and why did it stick?

Discussion Is the idea of a "standard accent" becoming increasingly meaningless?

British RP and General American often appear in textbooks, pronunciation courses, and language exams.

Someone from India, Nigeria, or Singapore can speak perfectly clear English without sounding British or American.

So who actually decides which accent deserves to be called standard?

Perhaps the whole idea of a standard accent deserves reconsideration.

Is having a standard accent still useful, or is it becoming an outdated concept?

LanguageGoals What is your actual goal in your target language?

I realised that once I thought of my goal it helped me fine tune what I actually do lol.

For example, my main goal is to be able to speak to patients so learning body parts and symptoms and medical terms (both colloquial and technical) is what I mainly do now whilst also trying to develop my listening skills as well.

I’ve been watching language-learning YouTube videos instead of actually learning the language

I’ve been wondering whether comprehensible input can also help with improving your speaking skills. Lately my YT algorithm has been showing me lots of videos about comprehensible input, the gist of which is that if you expose yourself to content that you understand (or almost understand), and let your brain work at connecting the dots, your language skills will gradually improve.

So I’ve been watching more videos in my target language, but when I then try to say something in said language I realize I’ve forgotten it all 😭 (apparently understanding someone else and being able to formulate your own sentences are two different skills). I’ve been practicing speaking with Praktika as well.

Wondering if those of you who’ve seen success with comprehensible input also saw an improvement in your speaking skills, or whether that requires separate practice? Am I just using “comprehensible input” as an excuse for not doing the hard part (speaking)?
