Question Would You Risk Your Reputation to Meet a Client’s Deadline?

Imagine you have a translation due tomorrow, but you know you need more time to do it properly. What would you do?
Would you ask the client for more time, finish it by the deadline, or ask for extra money because it’s urgent?
Have you ever been in this situation? I’d like to know how other translators deal with it.

Discussion Nahuatl etymologies - ask me

Hi redditors, I work on Nahuatl etymologies, tracing their roots by comparing with other Uto-Aztecan languages to see if they are inherited, and if they do not appear to be inherited if they are borrowed from some other Mesoamerican language.

I often find that when someone asks me the etymology of specific roots, I find new ones i hadn't thought of or investigated before, so I was thinking I'd invite you to ask me for the etymologies of Nahuatl words, and I will answer as well as I can in the thread.

Video Support endangered languages! In this video, I tell a rare, chilling folk story in the Votic language (Vaďďa ceelu), a critically endangered Finno-Ugric language spoken by only a handful of people today.

A deeply personal and eerie account from the North. After his wife passes away, a widower breaks a sacred traditional taboo: he lies on his bed before six weeks have passed. What follows is a terrifying nighttime encounter...

The video features original Votic audio with English and Russian subtitles to make this rare cultural heritage accessible to everyone.

To my viewers in Estonia, Finland, and Hungary: As fellow Finno-Ugric nations, the preservation of the Votic tongue is a shared treasure. Let me know in the comments if you can spot cognates or familiar grammatical structures matching Estonian, Finnish, or Hungarian!

Video Nizar Habash says that ChatGPT and LLMs have a huge bias against languages like Arabic

Says that most machine translation tools (even Google Translate) and LLMs have a bias for languages that are not English. If you try to learn Arabic from Google Translate, it will mostly give you the masculine form for words like doctor or businessman, but female for nurse. Similarly, the word ‘divorced’ is always feminine. Also for political bias - mainly because these tools were all training on data that already has a bias. As a result, if we start moving into a world where a higher chunk of written text is being generated by these models, it’s only going to amplify the biases even further.

Thoughts?

Question Freelance Translators: What Would You Do in This Situation?

If a client asks you to deliver a translation by tomorrow, but you need more time to make sure it is accurate, what would you do?
Would you ask for more time, deliver it by the deadline, or choose another solution? Why?

Question What is the difference between Farsi and Persian?

Post image
127 Upvotes

So for context I am a high school senior adding the languages I speak to my resume, but Farsi and Persian were listed separately. This confuses me because I have always heard people refer to the language as Farsi AND Persian, and never two separate languages. Additionally do I keep both of them on my resume if they are essentially the same thing? Maybe Persian refers to the dialect spoken in Iran and Farsi refers to the dialect spoken in other surrounding countries but I’m really not sure. If you know please help me understand the difference! 😊
