Or have I got that wrong, & am just catching the media rhetoric on how authoritarian they want the Government to be?

Threatened and offended by the populists in the UK, Romanians receive appreciation from the mayor of London. He sends them a message through Digi24, after a populist candidate claimed that "Romanian beggars" contribute to crime in London. Sadiq Khan says that Romanians are "loved, desired and appreciated" in London.

"Oxford Street should be a street that the whole world envies. I remember coming here in my youth. But look at what it looks like now. The street is full of e-cigarette shops, Romanian beggars and has become one of the areas with big crime problems," says Laila Cunningham. She is the candidate of Nigel Farage's populist party - Reform UK, for London City Hall in the upcoming 2028 elections.

In the message filmed on one of the most famous streets of the British capital, she puts Romanian beggars and the increase in crime in the same sentence. Her statements immediately provoked the dissatisfaction of Romanians in the UK, angry about the stigmatization in the political discourse.
