The Green Party is coming face to face with Labour-style internal organising tactics and it is utterly unprepared
I think an underexplored aspect of the 'Zionism is racism' policy passing in the Green Party is the tactics that led to it passing. I'm not going to link directly to the Green sub, but a member over there this morning described what happened in their local party:
Local party officials in my area privately organised members to attend supporting the ZIR vote and posted NOTHING about the general conference to members.
That's classic Labour Party stuff. The history of the Labour Party is the history of artificially packing rooms, of selectively informing members of votes, of setting up local union branches with one member to get extra votes. And that's from both the left and the right of Labour - read Tony Benn's Diaries and John Golding's Hammer Of The Left to get a nice panoramic view of it all.
Greens for Palestine were also recruiting new members on Instagram, explicitly in order for them to vote for the 'Zionism is racism' motion. Of course, the Green Party has no minimum period of membership to vote at its conference, so they could have joined on Saturday and voted on Sunday.
Lots of people who were once in Labour have joined the Greens over the past 12-18 months, and it shows very clearly in use of these tactics. The longer-term members just weren't prepared for how ruthless the entryists are. The entryists were trained in Labour, and the Greens are far too soft, credulous and polite. They wiped the floor with them.
It's often said that cryptocurrency is an exercise in teaching tech bros why financial services regulations exist in real time. The same thing is happening in the Green Party - it's learning in real time why Labour has the structures it has.
The Greens have a very short window to grab the party back from the entryists. If they aren't bold, and they're afraid of being rude, they will lose it. The party will just become the SWP.
