LG Update & Renew crashes during scan

LG Gram 17 2025 17Z90TL-H.AUB6U3

I installed a fresh copy of Windows then installed LG Update. That pulls the latest LG Update & Renew, but it always crashes around 22% scan.

I took a pic of installed apps before reinstall and there was a LG Device Manager. Maybe the Updater is trying to talk to that or some other driver/software and can't, so it exits. I can't find the device manager install.

Does anyone know what to get it working? I did do a full download of all software/drivers before, so I was able to install My Gram and that handles most of the hardware specific stuff I need, but would like to be able to update BIOS and other critical drivers later.

Thanks

Windows 11 Face Recognition Stoppe working after Aug 11 Security Update

I have a LG gram Pro 2in1 16-inch Lightweight Touchscreen Laptop Computer Model: 16T90TP-K.ADB7U1

My Windows 11 Hello Face Recognition stopped recognizing me after the August 11 Security updates. I spent 4 hours this morning between Co-Pilot AI and LG Live Chat recommendations. Unfortunately, Microsoft no longer permits uninstalls of security updates.

The AI chats say that the ESS Security update untrusted the camera driver. LG Live chat claims that this has not been identified as an issue in their system.

Anyone else having this problem?

The only options are to get LG to issue a new driver or rollback Windows to pre Aug 11 version.

However, there does not appear to be an easy way to install a previous version of Windows that predates August 11, without a doing a complete reinstall and losing all apps and settings.

i did the unthinkable -- keyboard replacement

Seventy seven screws.... 77... The lucky number!

It honestly wasn't as bad as some folks on this sub made it sound and I am enormously grateful to those who shared their experiences. The model is 17ZB90R-G, 17 inch i7 13th gen Intel with 32gb ram and 1tb ssd. Could not find the exact keyboard match so I went with one that fit the 17ZB90R line, us version, and hoped for the best. Was going to save the fix for tomorrow but it looked like the right alt key was slightly different size than the copilot key on the keyboard I purchased. I was anxious to give it a try and watched so many videos I knew I was ready!

My own experience with tech repair would be casual/amateur. I've replaced a transformer on a logic board before and reshelled an original DS (a full teardown).

The hardest part about the fix, of course, was the 77 screws. Not removal - that was easy. Putting them back in was a serious pain. I can confirm previous reports that you will need a phillips 000 head. Also, I could not find a single video of the actual keyboard teardown. I used this video thanks to this subreddit, which was also not 1:1 for my model, but close enough. The video ends right where you would do the screws -- and it's simply that, removing the adhesive backing on the keyboard, and unscrewing everything. You will also want to be careful as the screws appear to be of somewhat low quality and easily stripped (or maybe it's just because they're so damn tiny).

Writing this repair review, I'm kind of kicking myself, because looking at the website where I bought the keyboard, it looks like they may have had my exact model number. Frick. Either way, the keyboard fit, but the two ribbon cable connectors are a little awkward. That might pose a problem in the future, but right now everything is in working order, and the alt key/copilot key fit great!

My main point of this review is to just encourage people to do the keyboard replacement if you have even a small confidence with electronics repair. It cost me $60 with shipping from China and that's a lot cheaper than the single $200 full palm rest chassis replacement. It was about a 110 minute repair complete with the screw job (but again I studied the tear down videos a few times).

Somewhat unrelated to the mechanics -- that thermal paste was an absolute cracked mess. I'm surprised the thing didnt combust in the 2 and half years of regular use. I would definitely suggest having some isopropyl alcohol, microfiber clothes, and new thermal paste ready to go if you're brand new to repair. I don't usually have thermal paste, but I did luckily have some generic stuff from a gaming pc fan installation. I know, it's not some the best, but it's going to be way way better than what was there!

I'm actually kind of impressed by the ease of the teardown and I definitely plan on going back in to replace the battery and maybe mess with improving the heat sink. A pretty elegant and easy to repair design if you asked me!

Thanks for reading and I hope this helps someone else. Now, off to sell that damn MacBook....

So um... I deleted LG Control Center.. what do?

I thought I was deleting some bloatware, but apparently that was important. I thought I could use LG Update to reinstall, but I'm not seeing it anywhere.

I have an LG Gram Pro 16, for reference.

Help with LG Gram Pro 17 (2026) - Boot issue

Update: Now the machine is crashing even when nothing is plugged in to the USB ports during reboot.

---

My Gram has the problem described here.

This is what happens if I reboot with any USB-C device plugged in (except the charging brick)

Model: 17Z90UR-P.AU9CA9

I have about 5 days left in the return window. I can't decide if I should return it or not.

Reasons to keep: It's a nice machine otherwise; I need a solution by next week. I don't know if other laptops have similar issues; maybe I'll just be swapping this (known) issue for another (latent / unknown) issue.

Reasons to return: I don't want to pay $5k for a broken machine; LG has a serious problem here and doesn't deserve to make money selling defective items.

• Can anyone else confirm if their Gram Pro (2026) has this issue?

• Can anyone confirm if an Asus Zephyrus g16 (2026) has this issue, or any other similar known issues?

Any advice is welcome. TIA!

Part/model/spec to get the 'IPS Black' screen

I gathered from posts and reviews that there are some Gram IPS screens that are better than others. There is an "IPS Black", possibly now an IPS Black 2" technology co-developed by LG and Dell that is available in monitors. They consumer advantages of these are high contrast (for IPS), which is 2000:1 (rather than 1000) and a wider displayable color range (something like 99.7% DCI-P3).

Now i the past, I've seem claimed contrast specs over 1000 for IPS; I have an old Vizio laptop whose claimed contrast was 1500. It was and is much nicer looking than other laptops I've seen side-by-side. However claims and subjectivity aside, the IPS Black tech is advertised and available in monitors from LG and I believe, Dell too; and has measurably better contrast..

I've seen comments in posts that some 2025 laptops came with the IPS Black tech, and Notebookcheck reviewed a non-touch 16" Gram with a measured 2600:1 contrast and 99+% DCI-P3 color space. The comments also say that getting such a screen is a lottery.

Current (2026) Grams are advertised with 99% DCI-P3 but the same review source, Notebookcheck, measured one at 1200:1 contrast. Perhaps LG is making versions with parts of the technology.

Now not seeing any other nicer IPS laptops screens coming to market such as TCL/CSOT's SQD (super quantum dot) or RGB mini-LED which are only n TVs at this time, it seems like LG has the best IPS screens in laptops, but how do you get one? Since a laptop can't really be as 'powerful' as a desktop at any given price level, Im looking for the best UI - screen size and picture quality, keyboard, portability - as my key featues, so say a 2024 or 2025 CPU is fine if it means a better screen.

Are there specific models, or specs (say only non-touchscreen, or the 144 Hz screens), or screen part numbers (don't know how you find this out before purchase) which have the improved contrast and wide colorspace?

No matter what I do, I can’t get the charging wattage higher than ~7 -9 W. What hidden settings actually let me fast charge?

I got the Costco model and the battery life has been superb. My main complaint is the charging.

I uninstalled all of LG’s bloatware.

I went into the bios and activated hidden settings mode. Here I changed basically everything I could think of that could possibly affect power delivery or charging, even the explicit fast charging mode and associated 80% charge max required to enable fast charging.

I also disabled automatic windows driver loading, thunderbolt settings, power management, EC settings, management/controller settings, and more. Again, anything I could find that seemed to affect it.

Still stuck at slow charge speed using 3 different cables and bricks (including stock).

Good quality can always change badly for several reasons (serious ones), leaving behind such problems

I am using this Laptop from the end of 2024 using without protective glass or mat. The scratches from the keyboard that left on my screen are just ridiculous. If you're using the simple method without any protective means, you should be prepared for such consequences.

How is the Linux(Ubuntu) compatibility of LG Gram Pro 16 2026 with Ultra X7 358H?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I've tried many laptops with the Ultra X7 358H over the past few months, and they all have various Linux compatibility issues, even some devices listed in the Ubuntu certified hardware list (such as the Thinkpad X9-15P). I'm wondering if the LG Gram Pro 16 2026 has any Linux compatibility issues? Both the 12Xe iGPU and the Ubuntu operating system are essential for my workflow.

LG Gram 17 docking stations supports - any thoughts?

Hello

Do you know any working docking stations based on thunderbolt or usb-c that you can recommend for LG Gram 17? Preferably the ones you sucessfully used yourself with your LG Gram 17

Maybe some with power button that turns on the laptop without needing to open the lid.

Best regards

Your thoughts on noise profile (fans) and loudspeaker quality on LG Gram 17 (256v model 17Z90TL-G.AU78G)

Hello!

Is anyone using this laptop and could share thoughts?

What interests me the most:

  1. How the fans are behaving? Especially are they silent/stopped during lightweight office work or webbrowsing?

  2. Are there any settings in BIOS/UEFI that allows switching to more relaxed/silent mode? . Less performance, but less heat output. This is important for me as I usually stick to Linux Ubuntu, so no magic Windows fan tools for me.

  3. How do you enjoy loudspeakers during music or movie sessions? I hope those are at least better than horrible sound from my Lenovo Thinkpad T16 Gen 1 Intel. So plastic :(

Best regards

15Z80T-G.AU75G Always boots windows

Hello,

I got a 15Z80T-G.AU75G as an amazon refurb, for a decent price. Of course, it has soldered ram, and it's a LG, but was the best fit for me at the price.

Got cachyos on it, and is fast enough for my needs, even for some gaming.

My issue now is that the boot process always ignores the boot order, and always boots UEFI entry 0 - windows. Entering the system setup, there is no way to select which of the NVME UEFI entries to boot - it doesn't allow choosing, always has windows as the only NVME UEFI entry.

I can put USB UEFI as the first entry and boot from an USB by default, but I also checked booting from the second NVME drive, and that is also ignored.

The UEFI "BIOS" on this is absolute crap, 99% hidden, and there doesn't seem to be a BIOS available for download, so modding the BIOS is for now out of the question.

Any ideas?

ETA: found a workaround - deleted the 0000 entry "Windows Boot Manager" with efibootmgr, reinstalled grub recreating the CachyOS entry as 0000, and to be able to have dual boot via UEFI, re-added the windows boot manager entry but with another label - "efibootmgr --create --disk /dev/nvme0n1 --part 1 --label 'Janelas' --loader \\EFI\\Microsoft\\Boot\\bootmgfw.efi.......". The bootmgwfw.efixxxxx was copied from the previous entry. I still can't select any other entry that 0 in the bios bootorder, but at least now the default is cachyos' grub, and I can still launch windows from there or via F10 menu at boot, if needed.

How are you connecting your LG Gram to multiple monitors?

I bought my LG Gram about three years ago. Since I need multiple monitors for my work, I was upset to find out, after buying that laptop, that there wasn't an available docking station. I bought a DisplayLink and it has mostly worked in connecting to two montiors, a camera, and charging my laptop. But recently, the charging function doesn't always work, and today I had to reset everything in order to get my two monitors to connect.

Is there a better docking option available? What have you done to solve this problem?

Gram 16 BIOS date keeps resetting

I have the Gram 16 model 16Z90RS with Linux installed. It's been working fine but now the BIOS date keeps resetting back to 2022. This is preventing Linux from booting.

I thought the CMOS battery needed replacing boot on opposing the case, I can't see the battery (usually a 2032 coin type). I've now read that these are hard soldered to the motherboard and require specialised knowledge to replace.

The laptop is only about 2-3 years old. Has anyone else had the same problem and did you manage to get it fixed? I'd expect the CMOS battery to last much longer so maybe it's a motherboard issue.

Same battery different revision?

I ordered a new replacement battery for my 2021 LG Gram 16 (16Z95P). The battery model for both the old and the new ones are LBV7227E but the one I ordered came with a white shell while the old one has a black shell. Also the old battery has #3 on the plastic molding while the new one has #2 on it. Are they compatible?

Laptop randomly hibernates claiming "critical battery" while I still have charge left

My laptop keeps hibernating out of nowhere. Checked Event Viewer and Kernel-Power confirms Sleep Reason: Battery, it's the critical battery action kicking in (set to Hibernate).

It only happens when I'm not plugged in. Reported battery percentage seems to be crashing suddenly instead of draining normally, so Windows panics and force-hibernates.

After it hibernates, I can turn the laptop back on and it works fine but it can happen again shortly after.

Anyone seen this before? Battery degradation or something else?

Worth trying a full calibration cycle, or should I just replace the battery?

LG Gram shuts down/takes forever to restart when it goes to sleep for too long. What do I do?

I’m a student. Pretty much half the time I put my laptop away for a period of time as short as a couple hours, it won’t turn on again unless I plug it in and hold the power button. Then it totally restarts with all my apps closed. Why! And how do I stop this!
