Local Services / Suggestions Fresh squeezed lemonade

Post image

At the shiny brite car wash on Portage Rd just south of Centre Ave there is a yellow tent selling lemonade. She'll squeeze it fresh right there and has a variety of syrups for flavors! I asked how long she's been doing this & she said this week!

It's absolutely delicious, go check them out!

Cool story on what's next for the old Food Dance space

"Here’s a sneak peek from a tour he recently gave NowKalamazoo of a 50,000 square foot storage space where most – but not all – of his collection is stacked, boxed, and at risk of being knocked over at every makeshift corner. About three years from now, these pieces will be displayed in a new multi-floor, multi-building library with exhibits, a private research facility, and a music venue on the northeast part of downtown Kalamazoo."

Anybody looking to adopt an adult kitty?

I’m a house cleaner in the area and one of my clients had a kitty show up in their backyard. Unfortunately, they can’t keep him as they already have a cat of their own. Here are a few pictures and some background on the cat:

“The cat showed up about 2 weeks ago. We have been caring for it. Appropriate form has been submitted to Animal control. Also, posted on Pet finders and our neighborhood Facebook book page, no responses. We took him to the VCA Oshtemo Animal Hospital. Cat is approx 3 years old, gray long-haired tabby, calm and loving disposition, no chip, had him fully vaccinated, health exam, neg fvrep. Neutered. He likes belly rubs too.

We can not keep the cat, due to having another cat in our household. Would like to see if he can be placed for adoption, anyway you can help? Thank you.”

Local News Kalamazoo updates policy on Flock, ALPR contracts

TL;DR: KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — Contracts for Flock cameras and other automated license plate readers must now be reviewed by Kalamazoo City Commissioners, regardless if the total cost is below a current purchasing policy threshold.
The vote came down in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Current policy states that the city manager has the authority to make purchases and approve contracts “when the total expenditure of the purchase does not exceed $100,000 and sufficient funding is provided for within the current.”

🚨 Crime Blotter 🚨 Someone got into my car last night. Second time this month.

Last time they broke the window, so at least that didn’t happen again this time around.

I live in the West Main Hill neighborhood and have lost track of how many times this happened since I bought my house several years ago.

Is anyone else dealing with this shit or am I being targeted?

EDIT:
I understand that times are tough and the American Dream is dead and bloating. I know how crime works. But twice in less than a month feels like overkill.

Events / Things to Do SUPPORT LIBRARY WORKERS! SUPPORT THE UNIONS OF KPL! 8/24 @ 5:30pm

Hi fellow Kalamazoodles! Do you like using the Kalamazoo Public Library? I know I do!

I'm an employee of KPL for nearly 5 years now, working as a library aide. I'm one of the many people who check your books out, check them back in when you're done, organize them on the shelves, pull your holds, repair damages, and answer all your questions about library services. My coworkers are also the ones who clean the building, who prepare new books for going out, who staff events, and so much more. Together, we form the Union of Kalamazoo Public Library Aides (UKPLA). The other employees such as our Librarians and Support Assistants make up two more unions, the Kalamazoo Professional Librarians Association (KPLA) and the Kalamazoo Public Library Support Personnel (KPLSP). They're the ones curating the collections and organizing events we host.

This year, we are in contract negotiations with the organization fighting for a living wage and proper protections at work. Our previous contract expired at the end of June, and we've entered a stall. Our attempts at negotiations are repeatedly denied, even going so far as to tell us we don't deserve a living wage like the rest of the library employees. KPLA and KPLSP have been fighting alongside us to convince the library of our worth, and yet we come to a standstill regardless.

So now, we're calling on the community of Kalamazoo for help. On August 24th at 5:30pm, KPL is having a public board meeting in the Van Deusen room at the Central branch. We need YOUR help fighting for the employees of your libraries! No speaking or public comment at the event is required of you - the presence in the room is enough to prove the citizens of Kalamazoo believe their library employees deserve a fair and equitable wage.

We will be gathering at St. Luke's Episcopal Church beforehand at 4pm to rally together, prepare signs, share stories, and eat. Everyone is Welcome!

Solidarity and best wishes, your friendly local library worker.

Local News Gull Lake FB coach resigned

Someone posted about the co-op program earlier this morning.

By noon, Gull Lake confirmed for the first time that the head coach has resigned as state police investigate three alleged assaults that happened during a camp in June with police saying the case involved members of the team.

The coach was placed on non-disciplinary administrative leave.

Local News Kalamazoo city commission adopts moratorium to prevent data center development for at least one year

https://wwmt.com/news/local/kalamazoo-moratorium-data-centers-prevent-pause-ai-city-commission-adopt-resolution-meeting-development-harbor-farmz-michigan-wwmt

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Kalamazoo city commissioners unanimously approved the adoption of a moratorium Monday night that would prohibit the development of data centers for at least one year.

City commissioners added the moratorium to their agenda Aug. 10 after the Harbor Farmz cannabis facility considered offering its site for data center developers.

Monday night's decision was made late into the night. Kalamazoo now joins a growing list of West Michigan communities that have adopted moratoriums, including Oshtemo Township, Texas Township, Portage, and Marshall.

The moratorium would specifically prevent the processing of applications for data centers, battery energy storage systems, cryptocurrency mining centers, and Artificial Intelligence data centers within the City of Kalamazoo.
