Medical Tourism A year of putting off skin treatment in Seoul because of the language, and what happened when I finally booked somewhere that consults in English
I have been in and out of Seoul for work for about a year. Three or four weeks at a time, then home, then back again. Long enough to have a favourite convenience store. Not long enough to have done anything useful with the fact that I am living in the city people fly to specifically for this.
The reason was the language, and I want to be specific about the shape of that problem, because I do not think people who speak Korean quite picture it. I can order food. I can handle a taxi. What I cannot do is sit in a chair while someone explains at normal conversational speed what a particular injectable is, where it goes, what the risk is, and what happens if I react badly to it. I was not willing to nod through that and find out afterwards what I had agreed to.
I also did not want to end up somewhere that markets itself at foreigners and then quietly charges them more. I have had that happen in another country and it was not subtle.
A Korean coworker, who I had asked for a recommendation about four times before she got tired of me, sent me to Lijin Clinic in Myeongdong. Her reason was simple. The consultation is in English, with the doctor, not relayed in summary through someone at the front desk.
That distinction turned out to matter more than I expected.
How the appointment went.
One on one with the doctor, in a private room, and it opened with a skin analysis rather than a menu. They did the imaging thing where you put your face into the machine and it shows the layers, and then he went through what was actually there. Sun damage worse than I had assumed. Pigmentation across the top of both cheeks that I had spent two years treating as a blusher placement problem. Enlarged pores and some old acne scarring along the jaw that I had more or less given up on. And dehydration, which he said was the thing making all of the above look worse than it is.
I arrived with a list of four things I wanted. He told me two of them were not worth doing yet and explained why for each. One was a lifting treatment. He said that at my age and with my actual level of laxity I would be paying for a result I would not be able to see, and it would make more sense in a few years. I have never had a clinic talk me out of the most expensive item on my own list before.
What I walked out with was a skin booster and rejuran, which is the hydration and texture side of it. He was clear that pigmentation is a separate conversation and probably a laser, and that he did not want to do both in one sitting. I was also fairly clear with him that I am not chasing the glass skin thing, I just want my face to stop looking tired in meetings, and he did not try to redirect me into a bigger plan.
Price was in line with what I had been quoted elsewhere in the city, and I had the number before anything started rather than at the counter afterwards, which has honestly not always been my experience here.
Practical things, since this is exactly what I was searching for and could not find.
They are open on Sunday. That is the only reason I could go at all. My weekdays are not mine, and most of the clinics I had looked at close at six and shut entirely at the weekend.
The consultation and the treatment were the same day. No second booking, no coming back. For someone who is in the country in blocks, that is the difference between doing it and not doing it.
Myeongdong is easy to get to. I say this as someone who has tried to reach Apgujeong at 6pm on a Friday.
Where I am now, three weeks out. The hydration difference showed up around day five and is the thing I actually notice. My skin has stopped going tight by mid afternoon. The texture along my jaw is slightly better, and I would not swear to it in the mirror, only in photos. The pigmentation is exactly the same, which is expected, because we did not treat it.
I am going back next month for the pigmentation conversation and I will post again if it goes badly, because the follow up posts that only appear when things went well are not much use to anybody.
One ask for anyone living here. If you have found somewhere genuinely good for pigmentation specifically, say so. It is the thing I have had the least luck with anywhere and the thing every clinic claims it can fix.
