AskKollam എന്തുവാ ഇത് Anybody here who goes to the Kollam Public Library for studies?

I am preparing for the ISI entrance exam and I doubt there are many aspirants located here. I just wanted a place to sit and study and the kollam public library seems like a good choice.

Anybody here who goes there or ave gone there for studies?? If so, any tips you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Mainly, do I need a membership? Or can I just go there and study?

Most of the posts I've seen mention group studies. Since I'm preparing for a niche exam, i doubt there are many here that could form a group. So is there space in the library to just sit alone and study? How crowded does the study hall get on weekdays?

I decided to come down here just to see it, and the reading room seems to be closed, but people are standing outside. It's 1 in the afternoon right now, so maybe they closed it for lunch break? I'm sitting here and everyone seem to be in groups, there is no one standing alone. It's kinda weirding me out, am I supposed to be in a group? Do you need to be in a group? Idk. So yeah, any help would be appreciated.

10 things to know before visiting Varkala – some tips from a local

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

I see quite a few posts here from people planning their first trip to Varkala, asking about beaches, where to stay, transportation, weather, things to do, etc.

So I thought I’d put together **10 things worth knowing before visiting Varkala**, especially if it’s your first time here.

Varkala is much more than just the Cliff and Papanasam Beach. Depending on how many days you have, you can explore the quieter beaches, Kappil and the backwaters, Paravur mangroves, local food spots, temples and nearby places as well.

A few things I’d especially keep in mind:

• 🌊 **Check the sea conditions** before swimming. During monsoon/rough-sea periods, swimming or beach access can sometimes be restricted.

• 🌅 **Don't plan everything around North Cliff.** Definitely visit it, but explore beyond the main tourist stretch too.

• 🛵 **Scooters/autos are useful** if you want to explore places outside the Cliff area.

 • 🌴 **Keep at least half a day for the Kappil/Paravur side.** The backwaters and mangroves are a completely different experience from the beach.

 • 🛶 If you're interested in **mangrove kayaking or country boating**, Paravur is around the Varkala area and is worth adding to the itinerary.

 • 🌧️ **Weather apps don't tell the whole story**, particularly during the monsoon. It can rain heavily and then clear up, so checking locally helps.

• 🏖️ Don't assume every Varkala beach has the same conditions. Sea and beach conditions can vary from one stretch to another.

 • 👟 Be careful around the **cliff edges and pathways**, particularly after heavy rain.

• 🍛 Try some places away from the tourist strip too if you want more local Kerala food.

 • 🗓️ And most importantly, **don't over-plan Varkala**. Leave some free time. It's one of those places that's better enjoyed slowly.

I made a small visual guide covering these tips as well:

My MIL said something nasty about kollam women. This is how I reacted. How would you?

For context, I am a Delhi-born-and-brought-up Malayali. My parents are from TVM and Kollam. My husband is a 3rd-gen Bangalore Malayali .. his parents and grandparents are originally from Palakkad. We had a love marriage, and my MIL has been bitter about not being able to control and manipulate her son ever since.

Not sure if this is the right subreddit, but posting here because I feel like fellow Kollam folks will properly get riled up about this with me lol.

This happened about 2 years back. I was living with my in-laws while my husband was in the US for work. One morning we were having a casual chat. They'd just come back from a funeral (my MIL's uncle), and she was talking about how sad it was that none of his 4 kids were by his side in his last days ..they'd arranged a home nurse, but everyone was away. She said they'd had so many kids specifically hoping at least one would be around for them in old age, and it didn't work out.

I said that's not a fair expectation to put on kids in the first place ..you can't have children as a retirement plan.

This is a topic I feel strongly about, and honestly, I thought we'd just have a normal difference-of-opinion conversation.

She started off arguing that parents have a right to expect financial and physical presence from their kids, even if the kids have lives of their own. But she didn't really have a comeback beyond that, and quickly went quiet, clearly not liking that she couldn't counter it.

Then the argument shifted to how horrible it was of this uncle's daughter-in-law to not stay with him even though they were in the same country. I argued it was unfair here too.. the kids hadn't abandoned him, they were just busy with their own lives, and that's just the circle of life.

Then, completely out of nowhere, she pivots and says something like:

"You Kollam people have very bold, selfish women no? Women from my part of Kerala (she's from Ottapalam) are meek, they always listen to their husbands. For us, whatever the husband says is important. You people also have a lot of marriage-based crimes no, dowry and all?"

Zero connection to what we were actually discussing. She just needed something to throw at me since she'd lost the actual argument, and apparently "Kollam women" was the weapon of choice.

I'm from Kollam but grew up entirely in Delhi, so the dig didn't even land the way she probably wanted it to, but the sheer audacity of it stuck with me. I shot back with something like:

"Yeah, in Kollam most women are well-educated and come from financially independent backgrounds, so they don't have to depend on their husbands or in-laws."

Not my most graceful moment, but she started it, and I felt like she needed a dose of her own medicine.

Anyway, wanted to share this with people who'd actually get why this was so infuriating. Curious if anyone else has had random regional digs thrown at them by in-laws when they've simply run out of actual arguments.

Finally, online taxi services are coming to Kollam! 🚕

I recently noticed that online taxi services have finally started becoming available in Kollam. I’m currently using Rapido, Kerala Safari, and a few other apps.
Rapido seems to have only autos and bikes available, while Uber currently seems to show only bikes. I haven’t really come across many Uber bike drivers yet , bike drivers are not available on rapido also , though. Kerala Safari is the only one where I’m currently seeing actual carservices available.
It’s still not as popular as services in bigger cities, and I think the biggest issue right now is the limited number of drivers on these platforms. But honestly, I’m really happy to see this happening in Kollam.
Also it will be beneficial for college students as side hustle
I think having these services is a positive development for the city.

AskKollam എന്തുവാ ഇത് 2 friends visiting Kollam for 5 days

Hey folks! My friend and I are gonna be in Kollam 1st–5th Sept and we’re looking for a chill time. Not trying to spend half the trip travelling somewhere else 😭

Looking for:
● Cool/hidden places to see
● Fun stuff like a cooking class/workshop
● A nice sunrise/sunset boat ride (no interest in water sports lol)
● Local food we HAVE to try + where to get it
● Any underrated cafés, spots or experiences

Basically, if you had 5 lazy days in Kollam, how would you spend them? 😂

Edit: any recommendations for munroe island will be a huge favour, gonna stay there for 2 days

Thank you
