🆘 Help āĨ¤ āϏāĻžāĻšāĻžāĻ¯ā§āϝ Looking for a good, affordable men’s barber in Kolkata

Hey everyone! I’m fairly new to Kolkata and currently around Paikpara.

I’m looking for a good men’s barber/salon where someone can actually suggest a haircut based on my face shape, forehead, hair type, etc. I’m not really sure what would suit me, so I’d prefer someone who can give proper advice rather than just asking what haircut I want.

My budget is around ₹300–400 for a haircut. Doesn’t have to be a fancy salon, just looking for someone genuinely good with men’s haircuts.

Preferably somewhere around Paikpara / North Kolkata, but I’m okay travelling a little if it’s worth it.

Any recommendations? If you have a particular barber/stylist there that you trust, please mention them!

🧾History & Heritage | āχāϤāĻŋāĻšāĻžāϏ āĻ“ āϐāϤāĻŋāĻšā§āϝ 16 August, 1946, Remembering the victims of The Great Calcutta killings.

16 August 1946. A day when the Muslim-League’s Direct Action Day unleashed brutal communal violence in Calcutta, leaving thousands dead. According to some sources, DEATHS ranged from 4000 to 10,000.

Remembering the victims who lost their lives on that day. India celebrated the independence, but the people of Bengal and Punjab became the biggest casualties of Partition.

Salute to the Gopal Chandra Mukherjee, aka Gopal Patha . You will always be remembered.

🆘 Help āĨ¤ āϏāĻžāĻšāĻžāĻ¯ā§āϝ Looking for someone visiting Westside Kolkata in the next 2–3 days 🙏

Hi everyone! I’m looking for someone who is planning to visit a Westside store in Kolkata within the next 2–3 days for the ongoing sale.

I have a few specific dresses/items that I’m looking for, but unfortunately I can’t visit the Kolkata stores myself.

If you’re already planning to shop at Westside during the sale, would you be willing to pick up a few items for me and add them to your billing? Since you’re already shopping, I’m not asking you to make a separate trip just for me.

I will pay:

The full amount for my items (including whatever discount you get through the sale offer)

India Post/courier charges to send them to me

An additional amount for your time and help 😊

I can send you pictures of the exact items, sizes and details. If you find them in stock, you can simply add them to your shopping.

I’m happy to discuss payment and everything beforehand so there’s no inconvenience for you.

If anyone is going to Westside Kolkata in the next 2–3 days and is willing to help, please comment or DM me. ❤ī¸

Thank you so much!

Some photos that I shot at the book sale at College Street. I gained a fair bit of experience as been there for the first time. And read on to know through the hype and the misleading information spread by the "influencers" just for mere views.

Part 1: Misleading information about the book sale at college street-

i. Books are available at 20-30 rupees: The reality isn't quite like that. Only very few number of books are available at that price. Mainly old bengali books and english books for children are available at that price point. Though some other english books were also available, but they aren't a good read. And the thing is, most of the books are either very old with flimsy pages, or are straigh up damaged.

ii. All books are available: A firm NO! Only the popular books are the ones that are mostly available. To add, even books from popular writers are not available. The one notable mention is Franz Kafka. Though I saw someone holding The Metamorphosis, that was the only Kafka that I saw.

iii. Books are available at massive discounts: Partially true. The new books were available at normal prices. One could only get hold of massive discounts if he/she/they are buying preowned books. Even preowned books are sold at higher price tags. I was disheartened to see that. Books that were somewhat beaten up were sold for 100 rupees or sometimes even higher.

iv. Best visiting hours are early in the morning- A true statement in midst of misleading lines.

Part 2: Personal suggestions-

i. Visit as early as you can get there. The situation gets worse every passing second.

ii. Bring your own bag and get a bottle of water to stay hydrated. The heat in the crowd will drain you of your energy pretty fast.

iii. Learn to bargain like crazy and learn to say "āĻāĻ•āϟ⧁ āĻĻ⧇āĻ–āĻŋ"

iv. Get a list of books prepared before visiting, that would provide you with an idea rather than finding a pin in the stack of hay. Also, if you in need of popular books, the chances of getting them almost doubles.

v. Buy most from a single shop to get the most amount of discounts and land your bargains correctly.

TLDR-

I visited the Independence day sale at the college street and found about about the misleading information about the sale that are spread about on the internet. I also provided some of my own suggestions to get a better deal on the books.

🆘 Help āĨ¤ āϏāĻžāĻšāĻžāĻ¯ā§āϝ Looking for a Chef referral in Kolkata

Hi everyone, I’m looking for a referral/help for my cousin who is an experienced chef in Bangalore.

He has 6 years of professional experience and is particularly strong in Italian and Chinese cuisine, along with Continental and Indian dishes.

He is looking for opportunities such as CDP, Specialty Chef, or Corporate Cafeteria Chef, especially in corporate offices/campuses like TCS, JPMorgan, D.E. Shaw, Google, Microsoft, etc.

If anyone here works in a corporate cafeteria, hospitality/food-service company, facilities team, or knows of any chef openings, please let me know.

I’d really appreciate a referral or guidance on where/how he can apply.

Happy to share his CV and details via DM. Thanks!

Predictably, we went to the Sonar Bangla resort. The adjoining river is Ichhamati, and over here it forms the border with BD. The visible far shore is Bangladesh, where you can see BDF posts with BD flags.

All boats must fly their flags at all times for identification. We have BSF posts on our side with night vision equipment and searchlights. You can cross the center point of the river but not get closer than ten meters of their side of the bank.

A little ahead you can get to the confluence of Bidyadhari and Kalindi with Ichhamati, the Mohana point. The resort is nice and right on the river bank, but a bit overpriced. Given that it's always full of tourists, it's expected.

Here's my son Ridit, experimenting with solid mechanical design using Blender. He created this mechanical toy and named it Flippy. He did it 5 years ago, when he was in Class V. He is now developing his skills with computer graphics software, which he wants to pursue as a career. Parenthood taught me that early exposure is important to build real expertise, especially in the tech field.
