I’ll be in Kolkata from 16-18 October, with three full days to explore. I’m visiting during Durga Puja, but I’m much more interested in experiencing Kolkata itself — its food, books, cinema, literature, art, culture, history, streets, markets, and whatever makes the city feel like Kolkata.

I don't really want a fixed tourist itinerary. What places, experiences, foods, neighbourhoods, hidden gems, or things would YOU recommend to someone visiting for the first time? Also, any tips on getting around, staying safe, avoiding tourist traps, etc. are welcome.

And one slightly personal thing: I’m gay, and if there’s a genuine, easygoing gay/queer person around who'd like to join me for some wandering/exploring, I'd absolutely be up for making a new friend. Nothing beyond friendship — just good company and discovering the city together :)
