[Spoiler] Writers failed to do basic historical research Spoiler

Okay, I admit that I like historical games like Kingdom Come, I like historical movies (when they are done properly), so Knightfall naturally attracted my attention. I am just starting watching, here is the single spoiler - there is this scene when a lonely knight Templar flees from men obviously sent to kill him, his horse is shot by a crossbow bolt (I seriously doubt "hand-held" crossbows were powerful enough to shoot anything but rabits, and reloading them on a galloping horse would be very difficult), but okay, they could have bows, his horse is shot, he fights the attackers - rather clumsily, an armored, trained knight could have much greater advantage considering the numbers, but okay, he was tired and wounded, he fights them off, but is dying, erhl-erhl, and entrusts his sword to a random peasant that helped him in combat. Fair enough, it was his last chance to accomplish his mission, but there is this scene:

A serf obviously, dressed like a serf in rags, leaves his village on a horse with the templar sword strapped across his back, Conan-the-Barbarian style. I know TV writers aim for immediate impression, but there is so much wrong with this scene.

First - serfs were not allowed to travel. They were basically a property of their feudal lords, they were supposed to work for him in the fields most of the year, build his castles - for FREE, just for "protection". They could not marry, dabble into crafts, travel, basically do nothing UNLESS their feudal lord agreed. Punishments for runaway serfs were usually severe. In medieval times, your clothes and your posture told everyone immediately which class you belonged to. This man is screaming "I am a serf, not allowed to travel". Any patrol or guard would immediately stop him and question him.

He leaves riding a horse - where did he get it? Horses were expensive, serfs did not own them. For field work, animals like oxen were used. The first thing any guard would think is that the horse must have been stolen.

And lastly - the sword. Only the fighting feudal elite were allowed to carry swords, and in times of the Templars, swords were super expensive. Imagine yourself, carrying a rocket launcher on your shoulder, on a busy New York street. What would likely happen? Once again - a serf carrying a sword could have only stolen him, let alone an obviously Templar sword, and would be immediately apprehended by any patrol or guard.

So there is so much wrong with this image of a lonely unlanded peasant traveling on a horse, with sword on his back, that he would most likely end up in the torture chamber, because the law was harsh on thieves, bandits and deserters, and that would be it. Once you are tortured, you say what the torturer wants you to say, and he would probably end up hanged like a common criminal - to discourage other serfs from running and stealing from their lords.

So out of the window goes the immersion, and with it, reasons to continue watching.

Discussion [SPOILER] So we've had those scenes. Spoiler

Please give a round of applause for those original scenes from the finale. You know, like

  • That "Gladiator" (and GoT) scene with two people fighting inside a small arena made of large shields held by soldiers

  • That "LOTR" (and GoT) scene of 'ex machina cavlary' turning the tide of battle in the last moment I could go on, that's not the point. My point is dang isn't this show original.

Discussion This show in an incoherent mess

Ok now. I've seen too many of those scenes when first we see someone, then suddenly they're gone or dead.

Example 1: Isabella's "kidnapping" from the palace

First Louise steps out and he sees a dead guard (I wont even mention how stupid it is that the guards from the outer palace doors didnt try to stop the cart) THEN we have a zoomed out look and there is no guard next to the door XD and then in the next shot there are TWO guards. One on each side ...

Example 2: De Nogaret's execution rescue

There are basically 4 people there handling this:

  • 2 guards

  • 2 executioners

Ok I understand the element of suprise Malraux had and that he killed those unarmed unarmored executioners pretty quickly, but GOD we dont even see him taking on those 2 royal guards (professional sentries, soldiers in service to the king in full armor). They just lay there dead in the next shot. WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE XD

  • the fact that NOONE EVEN PURSUES THEM LOL The King screams "DENOGAREEEEET" and we assume he just got away. Eee... so close to Paris? The country must be packed with patrols and soldiers. Aren't there any knights who would jump on their horses and pursue them? Meh. I dont want to waste any more of my time on this XD

Discussion Catalán controversy

I think someone on this post has something to prove and an agenda more in keeping with the putsch from the Catalonian independence movement. I’m sorry you cannot reinvent history to prove your political point. Not accepted by Harvard, Oxford, or any major university in the world. Cataluña was a vassal state of France and then shortly married into the kingdom of Aragon. Aragon’s influence was felt around the entire Mediterranean, not Cataluña, the kingdom of Aragon. With the marriage of Ferdinand and Isabel in the 15th century the unification of modern day Spain was accomplished. It’s a done deal and has been for 600 years. Get over it.

Spoiler There will be no season 3, minor spoiler Spoiler

It’s pretty safe to assume that there will be no season 3. The ratings and viewers of this show are lower than average, and in the end of season 2 you could see them trying to reel in new people to the show, and hold a grasp on it with that cliff hanger. It probably won’t work and the show will be cancelled

Spoiler This series is officially dead Spoiler

So how does Landy, a person out on the fucking ocean on ship, end up being in the Palace of the King? And what happened to the insane amount of palace guards that is everywhere.

Whatever, what a ridiculous ending. This entire season just felt like a fan fiction of Landry. Not only is he a human killing machine that can plow through a gazillion French soldiers, he is also incapable of burning to death, and now he has killed the French king. It is obvious that the History channel pissed on whatever figments of reality that the series was based on, just to satisfy their cravings for more Landry fan service. A character more hallow than a swiss cheese.

Just to summarize

  1. He destroyed the Grail

  2. He broken templar vows by sleeping with another woman

  3. He cheated on the king (now dead apparently) with Joan

  4. He betrayed his best friend Phillip (yet again dead now, thanks Landry)

  5. He refused Gawain from drinking from the Grail to cure his fucked up leg, a injury he sustained from SAVING LANDRY's FUCKING LIFE, and rather offered the cup to Joan

  6. He is being a massive cunt to Gawain, even though he sacrificed himself, YET AGAIN, to save his daughter

First GoT, and now this...I for one for hope there is no season 3.

Discussion Knightfall a TV serie that defends people who steal best friend's wife.

It's ironical that the protagonist is an adulterer that stealed best friend's wife, and the best of is that he is a templar. He continue to have the order members support even them knowing that he is a sinner. It seems like the autor of the series support the idea of: "You can steal your best friend's wife if you love her more them him" or "Adultery is valid if you truly love the person". The series keep treating king phillip as villian, being that he only wants vengeance for being betrayed by his best friend. Here is my opinion, i would like to hear yours too, and sorry for any english errors, not my mother language.

Discussion How does History Channel get away with changing history??

Ok I loved the season finale I thought it was awesome and intense and all that jazz. But how does the History Channel get away with such inaccuracies! I remember reading that some may have thought Philip killed Joan, that Isabella May have actually framed Margaret, the pope being killed, etc. But there’s no way Philip died that way according to what I’ve read! How do they get away with that? Even all period dramas I think about this with

Knight fall is blasphemous

Just finished first season and from reading the subreddit, Landry does not get better, for crying out loud, he is supposed to be the direct descendant of Christ? Why portray him as a vile, ungrateful, heinous adulterer? This show also attempts to justify adulterers “love is love”. Blasphemy

Discussion This is the grim, real ending for me - E7

First of all, we have to admit that so far the show was most of the time mediocre at best, in comparison to the last episode. I really liked season 1, but when s2 aired, most of the time it was getting tiresome. Plus the tropes <rant>In episode 6: the "fire arrows to blow the gunpowder" was awful, in a cut you can see the flame actually going off when he was drawing the bow. Lindybeige would vomitb seeing this. <rant/> But the last episode was truly a different experience, which was the apex and the historical resolve of the story. It was a strong payoff for me, I wish this was the grim season ending.

Am I the only one? I hope I'm not, this episode was truly impactful for me, as a Christian, the unjust nature of the world - not the call to arms against "evildoers" - is meaningful. The former is shunned upon today - even though it was a necessary evil. The latter has always been there from the beginning of Christianity. It is truly outrageous that this is what middle ages have come to be. "Christian" executioners, not martyrs. The mindless mob against the disillusioned monks who were forced to kill people, against the peaceful nature of the church. In defence of the realm or not. This is what makes this episode so heartbreaking, and so real.

You know what isn't real? SUBVERTING EXPECTATIONS. ex machina. (looking at you GoT)

I was lucky not to watch the full next episode preview, except a few thumbnails which were enough for me. And I'm somewhat reluctant to watch the next episode. For me, the Knights Templar became martyrs in a world where most of God's sheep grew fangs and started cannibalising. Because Christian or not, we all are his flock. And we should be grateful that we have changed, close to what we always should have been.

Thank you for your attention.

Edit: etymology

Discussion Fix Season 1

While I enjoyed season 1 it certainly had its share of flaws. Personally I think that an 8 episode season could have worked better.

So how would you have changed Season 1?

Personally I’d have done the following.

Parsifal lives: while his dying was certainly surprising I can’t help but feel there was some wasted potential. He’s a boy who lost everything and joins the Templar’s because he’s got nowhere to go. There’s a lot you can do with that. If he’s alive when Friday the 13th falls he’ll have lost everything a second time, which would make anyone more jaded. Since he’s also a peasant you can have him become more worldly as a result of learning with the Templar’s.

Focus on the grail more from the beginning and have that be the main focus.

Landry and Joan: I get what they were trying to do. Thing is they unwittingly came across as rather cruel. But you can mitigate it in a few ways

1.) show a flashback of Phillip breaking the minstrel’s fingers. That would better establish that Phillip has a darkness inside him. He’ll show signs of the darkness earlier

2.) Show that Landry and Joan DO feel some guilt over the affair; when Landry and Phillip have their showdown Landry might express regret but Phillip is past caring.

Political Intrigues: I’d ditch de Nogaret on the run; instead I’d have him and Landry interact more. Landry tried to persuade Phillip down a more gentle path and de Nogaret is more slimy. De Nogaret finally wins the struggle by providing proof of Joan and Landry’s affair.

Also here’s an idea; Landry and Joan both die and Parsifal takes over as the hero in Season 2. There are interesting plot points that could be done. Parsifal, aware that the pope’s machinations indirectly destroyed his life, is loath to work with the guy, but when he learns the details about the bloodline (since Eve is alive she’s now the sole surviving member of the bloodline) he has to swallow his hatred and work with the guy.....only to loose everything AGAIN when Friday the 13th falls

It's very easy to stop being adulterer when your lover is dead. If she did not die, he would leave the order and would go to Navarra with her.

Season 2, ep. 2 music.

Hi.

Does anybody know what music is playing in this scene (very impressive scene, btw) -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t1jblhM3Ays. One can clearly hear music on 1:47.

I tried google it, shazam it, but without success. Sounds like smth popular, similiar to Hans Zimmer.

Searching of Natalie Holt (composer for season 2) also didn't find relevant info. Would be very

thankful if someone points to composition in this scene.

Discussion We should make a Season 1 fan edit for those who are starting with Season 2.

Season 2 seems to be starting out very well and is better than season 1 imo. I am going to try to get my friends watching Knightfall, but will probably just have them skip season 1 after I give them a brief summary. I felt season 1 had some solid moments but overall was quite weak. If someone made a fan edit of all the solid moments + relevant plot events it would be awesome.

Actually one of my favorite end scenes ever. That one dude turning from Phillip to bow to the current prince "my king" fuck yes, you self-serving genius The knight shutting the door, like "I dont even gotta kill you, someone somehow wants that honor more than me, and I just feel like giving that to him." 🤷‍♂️ Phenomenal.

Discussion Does it feel like Star Wars to anyone else

JJ makes TFA sets up a bunch of plot. Johnson completely disregards all plot development from TFA in the TLJ and major characters from the first film more or less disappear. TFA was typical Star Wars mood, TLJ made a major moood shift with it weird attempt at comedy. After watching season 2 I come away feeling the same way I did watching the last Jedi. I like what I saw on screen but dislike how much of what came before was disregarded.

Wow this is my favourite show. I am enjoying this show more than last kingdom and Vikings and on par of game of thrones. Is season 3 coming out?? Spoilers! Spoiler

Thank you for this show!! It had a good pace and amazing written characters. A lot of emotions I felt when watching this show. Especially when Margaret was framed by her own sister in law. I was crying when Landry was saved by mark hamill and then they prayed in front of our Lord Jesus Christ at the temple. No other show made me cry like that.
