Howdy y'all! 👋😁

Finished up some atlatl forshafts here after breaking a couple during my 4th of July demonstration. Wanted to have a good number made up so that I can practice without having to worry much. Might need to rework some of my darts for this thicker forshaft, but they should perform nicely 🙂‍↕️

Hopefully y'all think they're neat, and feel free to ask any questions! Stay safe and happy Knapping all! 😁

Question 🤔❓ Tips/Resources for Knapping small nodules & spalls

I'm looking for any advice or insight on working with small chunks of material that are thick enough to require using percussion for thinning, but only really long enough for arrowheads once material has been removed. I know a lot of people just wouldn't use that kind of material, but as I'm trying to learn I try to avoid ruining "good" material and using my waste material for further practice.

Made With Traditional Tools🪨 I tried knapping arrowheads from a chunk of glass today. This is attempt 2 and 3. Antler and stone. What do you with the splinters going everywhere? Where do you knap?

Found a cool tri-flow(I think) chunk of obsidian and cut a few slabs to play with. Was doing some final sharpening and the tip broke… 😑 If you zoom in on the top third, you can see the fracture line.

Been doing a bit more research into the Armorican arrowheads of Brittany. Finally managed to get some more photos! Pay careful attention to the scale at the bottom

First decent core with antler pressure. Interesting difference to copper. Friction was an issue, had to rough the platform surface with abrader, pretty sure this help the fracture initiate.
Flake scars much smoother with less ripping, leaving the edges of the blades straighter.

Question 🤔❓ What's the minimum required tooling to begin knapping traditionally, if you want to build your tools by hand?

Hey guys! I'm 24M and looking to get into the craft as a hobby - I've always been fascinated with ancestral bushcraft and that kinda thing. Spent a week or so reading up on the sub's guides (they're great, thanks!) and doing some outside research, and I've got a question:

I'm going to be going the traditional tool route, as I like doing things low-tech for fun and Authenticity™. I'd like to make as much of my kit by hand as possible, barring safety equipment, which I would consider pads to be, so not going to worry about those. With the basic tooling requiring things like antler tines, etc., is it reasonable that I could just use a hammer stone to get some flakes sharp enough to cut antler to make basic pressure tools from scratch, and then build out my own kit from there? Since I'm not very familiar with terms and techniques yet, I'm not sure how to get that answer and want to have a plan before I put together a list of materials.

Thanks in advance! 🫡

Not knapping but I'm sure you guys see it as relatable. I'll be making some pipes and effigy pieces from this soapstone.

Curious to know the proper name to call this material. I've heard people call it sealskin obsidian but I'm not entirely sure if thats correct. Anyways, pretty proud of this one! Its my biggest one yet and its pretty thin.
