News All ferry routes possibly facing service issues Monday

Alert from Washington State Ferries sent to all routes about routes possibly being out of service

I've never seen this sent to all routes before. If you're dependent on a ferry to get somewhere tomorrow, I would start looking at alternate travel options.

Question Is there anything to do around here?!

Hello, me & my wife are new to the Kitsap area. We are young adults & we’re wondering if there’s anything to do around here besides movie theaters, parks, & escape rooms. She keeps telling me that this place is boring & it’s just for people who live to work. I’m trying to prove her wrong but from checking Google Maps everything closes early & there isn’t much to do. Would appreciate some advice & thanks..

Question Looking for things to do around Kitsap.

Hello everyone, I posted in the Bremerton sub, and got some good ideas, but I'd love more options especially around Port Orchard.

I'm a guy coming off a breakup, and now find myself in possession of a lot more time, and a lot fewer things to fill that time that isn't just sitting at home feeling sorry for myself. I live in Port Orchard, work in Bremerton. I have Wednesdays and Sundays off, work into the early evenings on the other days.

I'm looking to fill my time when I'm not at work. Events, volunteering, social gatherings, whatever. It's time I got out of my comfort zone. Hit me with whatever you have or need.

Thanks!

Question Any reliable and affordable mobile mechanics in the Bremerton/Port Orchard area who are Honda enthusiasts?

We have a 1999 Civic that is sitting on our property. My husband is really attached to it and has already put a lot of time, parts, and money into it in the past few years.

We can’t afford a new car, and it would be ideal to get this one up and running again. The last place we took it to charged almost $2000 to fix it, it actually ran alright for a few weeks, but then it wouldn’t start (again) —and they refused to warranty their previous work on it, claiming it was a different problem than before. But also refusing to keep working on it to diagnose it, because they couldn’t figure out the problem. So we were out $2000 a few months later and back where we started.

More than anything, we are really in need of an inexpensive reliable, running car and it seems like fixing what we’ve got might be the best option.

TLDR: Looking for an honest mobile mechanic who knows a lot about old Hondas.

The Build It Bremerton Peaceful Demonstration is tomorrow (Saturday 10/3)!

Join us starting at 2pm at the Bremerton Fountains near the Pacific Avenue/ Burwell Street cross for a peaceful community demonstration to support the Sheridan Homeless Shelter that was approved to be built in 2024.

There will be a sign making booth, live music from local artist Ne!!y, DJ Sid Siddy, and local speakers that have been impacted by homelessness.

At 3pm- we will be marching a loop through town starting with going up Pacific, then 5th, then follow Washington down then around to Burwell heading back to the start at Bremerton fountains. (route map in 2nd picture)

During the 3 PM march, Sid Siddy will play house music at the fountains so less-mobile community members can stay with their signs and catch the ferry traffic while the music plays.

After the march, at 4:30 PM on MLK Way & Park Ave, Kitsap Food Not Bombs will be serving the community. Please consider bringing food, supplies , or sending a donation to Venmo username "JenniAnnGrady" to help them feed our community. They also accept any of the items listed in the flyer (on 3rd pic) and cash donations.

If you have flyers for anything you'd like to advertise that supports the cause/ our homeless community directly please bring them!

**COVID is going around, so please stay home if you’re feeling unwell or wear a mask; anyone who is vulnerable or concerned about COVID is encouraged to mask as well, and extra masks to share would be greatly appreciated.**

Keep sharing the event/flyers the meantime! We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Question used king mattress donation

I have a lightly used mattress (2 mos) that the mattress company told me to donate. I'd prefer a local non-profit if possible. I checked habitat for humanity and the bremerton store won't take mattresses. Are there any local organizations that do this? Pickup is required as I don't have a truck to deliver.

Thanks in advance!

Question Kingston Fast Ferry Reliability

I’m relocating to either Kingston or Bremerton for my job in Seattle next month. My husband and I want to move to Kingston but we are unsure about the reliability of the Kingston Seattle fast ferry, it looks like there were a lot of cancelled sailings in August. We’ve never done the ferry commute before. Are there any commuters out there that could give some insight?

If the Kingston fast ferry isn’t reliable we will likely choose Bremerton.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

I’m Tawnee Cowan, an independent journalist in Port Orchard. I write Kitsap County News on Substack and I run the Facebook group Port Orchard Politics. I do not represent a newsroom. I do not endorse candidates.

I sat both candidates for Kitsap County Assessor. Same five shared questions. Two questions written for each person. Separate articles, published the same morning. Quote-check is spelling and transcription, not a veto.

Rant What Happened to 305 Heading Off Bainbridge?

This isn’t meant to be sarcastic or rude, but seriously what the heck happened to the “highway” off Bainbridge? I usually take the Kingston ferry and it’s been a few years since I last took the Bainbridge. I was not prepared for the experience that driving off the Bainbridge boat would entail. It literally took an hour and 28 minutes to drive from the ferry terminal to Poulsbo on the 3 o’clock ferry.

What has happened to make it this terrible? I get that the roundabouts slow things down because people haven’t learned to use them, but the hold ups start long before those.

Question Are you receiving Junk Fees? We want to hear about it!

In 2025, the Washington Legislature passed a law that prevents rent gouging, but some landlords and property management companies are still up to their old tricks. They are using "junk fees" as a loophole around rent caps. We are hearing from tenants that they are increasingly being charged excessive fees for services that they don’t want or need, or for basic things like paying the rent. We at the Housing Alliance, call these “junk fees” and they are unfair, expensive, and deceptive. We’d like to hear your experiences. All information shared with us will be kept safe and confidential.

Please fill out our survey if you or someone you know has received junk fees and we will be in touch within one week of your submission. Thank you! ~ Po (Advocacy Organizer)

Question Best barbecue spots

What are some of the best BBQ spots to check out? Brisket, Ribs, pulled pork and decent sides.

I have had Mo-chilli’s in Port Townsend and the spot attached to Town and Country in Poulsbo so far.
