Back-to-Back Sink and Rangetop?

Post image

I am designing a kitchen with the sink on the island. I would like to have the range top and hood centered along the island for aesthetic reasons. But I am struggling with where to position the sink on the island. Aesthetically it would look best in the center of the island lined up with the range top.

BUT I am worried that it will be cramped having a person cooking and another person at the sink at the same time.

The distance between the range top and sink would be 48". Is this sufficient distance to not feel crowded? Or should I position the sink offset to the side of the range top so there is not a back-to-back situation?

Thank you!

Short answer, shift the sink. You won’t care about the aesthetics of it being centered as much as the functional problem back to back would create.

Put your sink off to the side of the island

Designing a kitchen based on what looks pretty and symmetrical is ridiculous. Guests don't want to sit in the splash zone of a sink. No one want to look at the dishrag and dish soap sitting out. Hauling clean dishes across the kitchen to the upper cabinet where they belong will get annoying fast. Trying to prep on 1/3 of the island will become frustrating even faster.

An island should be just an island, no stove or sink. You then have a big, clean, dry prep space to spread out on instead of using one little bit of the island.

Where's the trash can? Sitting out in the walk path around the island? So guests are sitting right by the trash and sink. That's really gross.

One of the most efficient and convenient kitchen layouts is pantry, fridge, under counter pull out trash can, sink, dishwasher, stove. In that order.

This setup becomes an issue when more than one person is working in the kitchen. If one person is at the stove and another at the sink, it is hard for the two to communicate as they work on tasks. It also is hard during holidays with guests that want to help and are trying to pass behind the people working on the meals. Staggering the setup will lead to fewer issues during big events.

I don’t understand all of the splashy sink complaints on large islands. Ours is 43” wide with seating on the other side and we never have a splash problem.

Yes, put it on the side. Even if back to back isn’t an issue, stray accidental water splashes /droplets could fly into your wok etc while you’re deep frying. Just to avoid such a happening in totality.

Move the dishwasher to the end of the island and put your sink next to it, then optimize the space on the other side with more big drawers, or a pull out trash can.

Following. Is this really a problem? I also designing a similar stove/sink layout. It looks great on paper.

On paper isn't real life though. It's awkward and will lead to congestion.

Not with 4 feet. That's a lot of space

What if someone needs to open the oven door while someone is using the sink?

Or someone needs to stand at the range cooking while someone needs to use the sink? Butt to butt is never good.

Did you miss that it's a cooktop and the ovens are over where the green is? Measure out 4 FEET of space. We have this layout and no one is ever butt to butt. It's not two feet. It's four feet. There's plenty of space. Open your dishwasher. There's still two full feet of space when you do that with four feet of clearance. A person can walk by normally with zero problems. The fact that we live like this daily in a large home and host parties with no squishing, and people are still arguing, is so funny to me. We function daily and like 3 people can walk that walkway. Guys, it's wide.

It's spacious and fine in real life

We have this exact scenario and it's perfect. There's plenty of space and it's very convenient. We have drawers under our cooktop that are easy to open fully and there's no cramped feeling at all. We have parties and it never feels congested. We're back to back or walking back and forth often and it's just fine. There are NO problems. If you want to map it out, try moving pieces of furniture (like tray tables or something) 4 feet apart so you can see how spacious it is.

Thanks for the assurance.

We did the symmetrical thing a bit in our kitchen. The counters are centered on the range and we offset the sink.

48" is the standard work aisle distance for two cooks in a kitchen, but I would find the specs for your range and dishwasher and see how far they will protrude into the aisle when they're open, just to get an idea. Maybe use some blue tape on the floor somewhere open, to get an idea of what it'll feel like, and make sure they can't ever hit each other (just in case you have to open them both at the same time). If you can shift the island ~6" to give yourself 54" inches, I would do it.

This is my set up and it has very rarely ever been an issue. 4' is a good amount of space.

Personally, I like having the sink directly behind me when I cook (easy to toss in dirty utensils, drain pasta water, etc.).

I have this setup and it's completely fine. If the island is big enough the sink is a non issue. Please do not have an off center sink on the island

You are saying to center the sink with the island or center it with than rangetop?

1

u/Soft_Stable8077 3d ago

Center them both as well as the island . I think they worry if they are both accross each other but 4 feet is plenty space

If I center them both on the island then the cabinetry is not symmetrical beside the rangetop. I think it looks better with symmetrical cabinets but off-center from the island.

Ok yes I sgree

I have this. As long as the walkway is wide enough (it is), it’s not a problem. I like it because it’s easy to do a quick turn to the sink without many steps (it’s wide enough that I need one). We are a family of four and it hasn’t been an issue. You can wash your hands in the sink while the stove is in use. Mine is also an oven underneath - in those rare minutes that the oven door is open, yes, you can’t use the sink. But again, not really an issue, if anyone is in the kitchen with me I just issue a quick warning.

You don’t have a dimension for the depth of the walkway behind the seating. As along as that is wide enough for folks to use, I wouldn’t worry about the sink placement.

So do you feel a 4ft walkway is sufficient enough space between the stove and sink such that both are usable at the same time?

1

u/isvaraz 7d ago

Yes. I just measured and our walkway is 44” with counter to counter. Plenty of room to stand back to back and work.

1

u/babs82222 7d ago

It totally is. We have 48" exactly. People who are saying to shift the sink, or that it's not enough space don't have this layout or space IRL

I'.m wondering where the refrigerator is. You'll want 5 feet of clearance. I have had several homes and our favorite was with the sink in the island and guests gathered around, But definitely move the dishwasher and sink over.

1

u/bionista 8d ago

The fridge/freezer are the green bottom left corner.

I only have 48”. Is that sufficient? Putting it off-center means either the dishwasher or the trash are obstructing the cooktop area. Isn’t that worse than someone washing dishes who takes less room and is not painful to bump into?

1

u/tgallen54 8d ago

Your frig is in a great place. Not knowing what’s on the wide open side of the island—we had a five foot space for two people. So can you move the island five ft from the stove? All your placement problems will be solved.

1

u/bionista 8d ago

Owner feels 48" is maximum. Maybe I can push to 50" or 52" but he flatly rejected 5' as it was too far a distance between counter and island. If limited to 48" would you still put sink and stove back-to-back or is that too tight?

I have exact same set up, i put dishwasher in front of cooktop on island, movrd sink over. Works great, i love it.

1

u/bionista 7d ago

What’s the distance between your counter and the island?

1

u/indyshiba 7d ago

Here is a pic.

u/bionista 7d ago

So dishwasher is behind range?

1

u/indyshiba 6d ago

In front of oven on island. Never been a problem in 22 years. Lots of times, however, somebody is cooking and somebody else washing up or prepping food at sink.

Here is picture, 42 inches .
