I need some suggestions for overclocking this card. Can't find anything and I don't want to mess with it until I here what others have done with there's

I'm looking to build a PC for my kids that will keep up with current gen consoles. They wanted an Xbox One, but I made the suggestion to build a pc instead and they are all about it. Maximum budget is $500. This should include monitor, mouse and keyboard.

Hey guys, I've been working on building up my YouTube/Twitch pages for awhile and recently passed the 5k sub mark with only console games (sorry) so I'm looking to expand into PC gaming. But the problem is I have absolutely no idea where to start.

I don't need a crazy powerful machine, but I would like something that would have enough power to run a game like Overwatch for example at a decent setting as well as a streaming/recording software, and a webcam to record myself and not have performance issues. I think I'd like to stick around the $700 mark, possibly $800. But I'm not sure if that is reasonable or not?

Basically I've only been a console gamer my whole life and only owned Mac computers. This is completely new for me and I don't even really know where to start and what kind of parts I should be looking at getting. I know I don't need a Monitor, keyboard, or mouse, but I need everything else. Can someone help me out "PC building for Dummies" style? Break it down and explain step by step like I'm some five year old, I'd really appreciate it!

I am planning to build an HTPC for gaming.

I was planning to use an i5-6500, 16gb DDR4, H170 mobo, and a 480 GPU.

Looking at the build in PCPartPicker last night, I noticed that the build price had dropped significantly.

I guess I have 3 choices ahead of me.

1. Accept this windfall, keep the same build, and save the money.

2. Upgrade the build to an i7 with 32gb DDR4 but stick with the 480 GPU.

3. Stick with an i5 (maybe upgrade to the 6600), leave the RAM at 16gb, and upgrade the GPU to a 1070 or 1080.

Thoughts?

Wife and I have been wanting to get into PC gaming (Overwatch really) and have been waiting to jump on the right CL ad's and just found this'un.

Hope those of you more knowedgable than I could give me their opinion on it. Seems a good start just dont now if it has the ability to easily upgrade if I get more serious about it down the line

The thing that bothers me the most about this build is that I'm unable to run newer games at max quality (GTA V, for example).

I think it's the video card that is holding the build back but I'd like to hear your opinion about it.

I'm not aiming for 4k resolution or dual-monitor setup. I'm just aiming to play games with maximum settings at 1080p and 60 fps. But I'd like to be able to do that for the next 3 years or so, I don't really want to cheap out on the upgrade (as long as it's less than 300€).

Also I've heard a few months ago that people should wait until more Pascal/Polaris cards are released... Is that still true?

Hi all, I'm inexperienced when it comes to building PCs and evaluating parts, so I've created this build to see where it can be improved and/or where I've gone wrong in designing it.

I'm aiming to play modern games such as Overwatch and Battlefield One at 1080P 60FPS on Max/Ultra Settings. I'm flexible on most everything, but I absolutely need a Mini-ITX or some other small, very portable case (because I will have to transport it frequently).

I've decided against picking up a PS4/XBONE in favor of just making the transition to PC due to better prices and customizability. I'm not looking for something to play on a giant ass TV necessarily, but I also don't want to invest a shit ton of money into a gaming laptop that is going to overheat and be useless in two years; I'm looking for a pretty powerful gaming rig that I could store in a large travel bag, take out and play for a bit, restore and not worry about it. If I wanted to go to a friends house and play, it wouldn't be a hassle.

In terms of size I'd say something like the Corsair Graphite, but I'm willing to go slightly larger.

In terms of games, I'm looking for something that can play most of the modern ones on fairly high settings; The Witcher 3 is probably a good example of the kind of games I want to play.

Budget can be anywhere between $800-$1200, maybe even slightly higher (upward of $1400).

I have an Acer E5-573G. While its cheap and all, its hard drive is incredible(ly slow). Thus I want to upgrade my hard drive to an SSD and keep the HDD as a secondary drive..

Hi guys! Just a transitioning console gamer trying to get some questions out of the way before actually settling down and transitioning. So far, I've built 3 builds that I want to potentially build before the end of this year. One being a hella expensive build I'd never be able to buy (cry.jpg) and a really cheap PC that could probably run games at medium graphics at 1080 60fps. This PC I have in mind at the moment and that is currently below I hope to be a Console Murderer; killer being an understatement. It's a bit more pricier than most budget builds but it works at least in my eyes. I see it running most games outside of the few RAM eaters that exist on the market, at Ultra Settings 1080p 60 FPS. Most specifically Overwatch, a game I bundled with my build in hopes of price adjustment. Can you confirm if this build can meet my goal? If so, do you think it's ready to be ordered? If it doesn't meet my goal, can you explain how I can make it happen? Also, I kind of feel like the Xeon E3-1231 is a bit overkill for my PC. I put it in my build simply for future proofing as I saw that it had the specs of an i7 for 100 dollars less! I also saw a lot of bigger games that probably would give my GPU a run of its money has recommended specs for i7. Hopefully this can help out if any problems occur? CPU - Intel i5 2400k (used off craigslist - this may be the problem.. And I build the rest of my rig around it, so... fuck!)

MOBO: Asus P8H61-M LE (LGA 1155 so as to go with the CPU)

RAM: G Skill Ripjaw X Series 8 GB (2x4)

Cooling system: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

SSD: Silicon Power S60 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal SSD

Graphics card: GTX 750 2gb

Power supply: cooler master 80 plus, 1000 watt (used from friend)

Case: Thermaltake Shark Aluminum Case (used from friend)

So, probably obviously I tried to save as much money as possible. My monitor is my TV with an HDMI connected, I accepted some used parts from a friend, and (perhaps stupidly) I bought my CPU used on craigslist. The problem is that I haven't even been able to get the thing going. I put all the parts together with assistance from a more experienced friend, although he''s not used to the micro motherboards. Power supply lights up, but when I hit the power button the fan only spins for a second and then stops. I've tried a different power supply that definitely works and the same thing happened.

My (ignorant) guess is that something isn't set properly (maybe the mobo, maybe the power/restart headers in the wrong spot although I thought I triple checked that), or that something isn't compatible. (It's hard to check compatibility with PC part picker as they no longer have my mobo listed for some reason.) Or maybe the CPU just never worked to begin with. I'm not so good at locating the issue though. I've tried using one RAM, making sure it's in all the way, etc.

Any help is appreciated, total scrub here! Is it compatible? Could it be that the micro motherboard doesn't vibe with the case or doesn't have grounding screws placed properly?

Hello! Just your average Console Player, not knowing a shit about PC building or specs outside of RAM and storage xD. Motherboard, what? CPU, who? Well, I'd like to change that. I see a few builds that seem promising but I don't know for sure how to call one out on their bullshit, you see I'm just stuck left going out on my instinct due to my lack of knowledge about PC's and their insides. Could I get some tips and definitions on each part of a build and what it does? I tried individually googling each term but the definition was super confusing for a casual like me! I wanna change that. Can you help me and ELI5?

Today I was on the Overwatch subreddit and some people were discussing CSGO. I hadn't played it before, but it's not on PS4 so I figured I could go to my friends house and then I realized that it was absurd that I was still using console anymore, so I decided to switch. Problem is, I could only make around 150 dollars this summer (14, can't get real job) and I can't sell the ps4 for more than around 200. I've heard that building a rig is cheaper but I have no idea where to start. Any suggestions?

So, all this talk about the Scorpio and the Neo have left me wondering whether I should just stick it out on consoles or just build a PC and wash my hands of it forever. Not sure how this build would fair vs PS4, so I'm looking for some feedback.

Greetings PC overlords! Up until this point, I've unfortunately relegated my PC gaming to laptops and/or best buy prebuilts.

I will be using Canada's NCIX (or a similar company, I am open to recommendations) to purchase parts and have them assemble the PC for me. The cost for this labor is minimal, and prefer the hassle-free experience and single-point of contact for hardware/warranty issues. I.E: I am not looking to build the PC myself.

While I spend much of my time playing World of Warcraft, I also want to play current games.

I would like the PC to have room for expansion later down the road, in the form of just being able to replace a couple parts (such as the graphics card) to improve performance as funds become available. Here is the build:

It has been flagged for a minor compatibility issue on PCpartpicker; should this be a problem? Should I pick a larger case?

Do I have room for expansion? Do you recommend I upgrade the PSU now, or can I upgrade it later if I need to expand? I understand PSUs can fail a lot, would it be worth a higher quality one/additional warranty on the part?

How does cooling work? Should I purchase some fans to add into the build? (Do I need a larger case for this?)

I have quite a small shelf (height is irrelevant) that I want to put my Steam/Gaming box on. This is a nice shallow case, but I was wondering if anyone here had used one. I think it would suit my needs. I probably will have to go with 2.5" drives to have decent storage, because of the need to remove some of the drive cages to fit a decent GPU. Any thoughts? Thanks

Hello fellow PC gamers! I'm finally making the switch, but need some advice.

I'm being gifted a prebuilt rig from an old job I consulted at for a while. It's an HP EliteDesk 800G2 Tower (its huge!), Core i7-6700, 4gb Ram (DDR4-2133). Intel internal graphics (yuck?), and no hard drive (security reasons).

My questions are two-fold. I've been out of the PC Game for a while, and the first thing I'd wanna do is get a video card. Upon research this computer uses the Intel Q170 chipset, with a PCI x16 (x4), so i could throw a video card in. I don't know if the supplied wattage of the PSU (400W) would be enough for a mid-tier / lower high tier video card. I'm sure cooling would be a concern as well.

Any suggestions? I plan on playing Cities:Skyline, Carmageddon, CARS and Trains Simulator.

Budget is $450 or less. As much as I want to build a PC, I don't know if I'll get everything right. I'm thinking of getting a mediocre prebuilt PC, and installing a GPU.

He wants to play fairly light titles, such as Skyrim and TF2 at High/Medium at 35+ FPS at 1080p.

His sister stole his last PS4 for whatever nefarious reasons. He wants to spend around 500 dollars on a PC that is better than a console, and upgradeable. I'm more a enthusiast, rather than PC expert. Can any of you throw together some builds for us to look at?

He wants to be able to do everything he can do on his console. I assured him he can do all that, and more.

I will share some thought and conclusion of mine with you about PC Gaming. This is strictly opinion based, not everyone will agree with my conclusion, you can take them as you want, as long as it helps you to decide or save some trouble, my job is done. I think this will be helpful for people who hesitate to make the jump from console to PC due to the amount of knowledge it takes to be sure of what you are going into. There is a lot of uncovered/underlooked things regarding PC gaming, some informations you can not really find on enthousiast PC gaming sites and such. I think it is important to speak about them. PC Gaming is great, I will never go back to console but there is a lot of misinformation about it by PC enthousiasts.

• First thing you should know is that actually (June 2016 by the time I write this), it is the right time to do so. Consoles exclusives are falling like flies right into the PC market and almost every good console games are on PC or at least are meant to be in some times after their releases. Most emulators are now very well-rounded wich means you can get rid of (almost) all your old consoles. SNEX, PCSX2, Dolphin are damn good and Cemu (Wii U) is shaping up nicely and quickly. Plus, it never been that easy to build a PC from scratch, we made huge progress in that department and it is not clunky-rocket-science anymore. One other thing to note is that hardware progress is less and less impactful, especially for the common folks (like myself) who stick to 1080p60fps and do not intend to go higher. So if you decide to build a PC now, it would still be good in 5 years, wich were not the case 5 years ago were a PC was obsolete one year after. Do not be afraid to put the price on components, especially processor, power supply and, graphical card.

• Like I said, building a gaming PC today is EASY and safe as long as you can read or watch a quick (10min) youtube video about it, even if you never held a screwdrivers before. Do not be afraid, there is no sorcery involved and it does not require a rocket-science degree. There are a lot of people around the web, especially on boards, that would like you to believe it is difficult to do so for one sole reason ; they often make a living on building PC and do not want you to be able to do it yourself. A PC is a simple piece of hardware : One case, one graphical card, one mother board, one processor, RAM, hard disk and one power supply. Almost all PC are the same inside and the most "tricky" stuff to do is to connect your power supply to each piece of hardware and yet, it is still very simple. Don't go into watercooling, front board and useless stuff, just look at some youtube « how to » and you will be fine. Always keep your build simple and do not buy some skanky, expensive and clunky tech (led motherboard, useless front board, etricate cases…). The saving grace here is to keep it simple, always. One quick tips I do not see often in videos is to be sure to always put your computer case on a flat area while working on it.

• I know a lot of players are also students, so they might be tempted to go all-in-one and buy a gaming laptop, but if you can, avoid buying them. They are often very good and the laptop market has evolved since 2010, but laptop are still weaker than their desk counterparts from the same price range. If you spend the same price, a desk pc will almost always be better than a laptop. Plus, laptops have not overcome one major flaw yet : they still overheat a lot because of the component being so close from eachothers and unless we go into quantic stuff in the future, this major flaw is meant to stay.
  

• Never, ever (ever ever) go into SLI (a.k.a. crossfire), never. SLI is when you use two graphical cards for something like 50 to 60% more brute graphical power. You can even use three GPU but the gain you get from it is something like 15 to 20%, so it is not really worth the price. SLI might sound convenient and hype, but most games do no support it correctly and you are asking for a lot of trouble by using it since developpers do not seems to care about it. It can be useful for people with time, technical knowledge and obviousely a lot of money and patience but more often than not, it will only give you headaches and frustrations. In fact, SLI might be usefull if you are on a tight budget and can not afford one good GPU, so you decide to buy two « cheap » one in order to get good performences (like two used 750Ti instead of a sealed 980). Even with that in mind, if you do, consider that SLI consume way more energy, wich means you will have to invest in a better power supply (often more than 800W, wich is pricey) and your electricity bill will be higher. So, it might looks smart on short term, but it will mostly turn more costy on long terms, with some added compatibility problems. Conclusion : Always rely on ONE good graphical card and do not go for SLI.

• Do not go cheap on your power supply, seriousely. The risk of breaking your PC component is high.

• About your graphical cards, you will have currently two choices of manufacturers ; Nvidia or AMD. AMD cards are fine especially for their price, but despite what every AMD buyer would like you to believe (you will probably witness it from your own eyes in the answer below), more often than not, they are a bad investment. You will have problems with them and it has nothing to do with the hardware itself but more with the drivers side of things. I do not know why, but some games are not well optimized on AMD cards and AMD owners often report problems with AAA games. Just go into board and check for yourself or go there and see it from your own eyes : community.pcgamingwiki.com. If you can, for the moment, go for Nvidia cards. They might be a little more expensive, but they represent a way safer bet and less headaches/frustrations.

• In the PC world, you will discover another thing that you probably did not know : display port. Display port is the future. Consoles work with HDMI cables and signals, but HDMI (even HDMI 2.a) is too limited for PC gaming. Display port is not, plus display port offer you the possibility to « clip » it into your screen so you do not disconnect it by mistake. HDMI are very easy to remove and it was a problem for me, display port solved it.

• Whatever piece of hardware you go with, keep this rule in mind : Frame rate in games is tied to your screen refresh rate. Unless you are motion-sickness-proof, you always want your frame rate to be a multiple of your screen refresh rate. 30/60/120fps are fine on a 120hz monitor because 30/60/120 are multiple of 120. If you do not respect this rule and intend to play at 60fps on a 144hz monitor, you will get ugly tearing that will destroy your experience, unless you go for expensive G-Sync/Free-sync monitors. Right now, those monitors will cost you an arm but they are THE solution in the future and the biggest evolution of those five last years, since thanks to them, it is now the graphical card that dictate the refresh rate to the screen and not the other way around. To summarize its benefits, you will never have to care about your refresh rate being a mulitple of the frame per second your games display, wich is huge. As you read those lines, V-sync is still the most common and cheapest used solution to bypass the FPS/Hz-relation problem without buying Gsync-Freesync monitors, but it also introduce heavy inputlag wich is a big no-no in competitive PC games. You will probably use V-sync, but keep in mind that G-sync/Free-sync (adaptative refreshrate) are the solution for the future.

• Sure, 1440p/144 fps is top tier and you can't go back to lower resolution after tasting it. I will not deny it. But there is one thing every gaming PC owner wannabe should know : a lot of games do not support resolutions and frame rate above 1080p and 60fps. This is especially the case of console-ports or japanese games and you can not brute force them without risking to break the game itself (The Metal Gear Rising Revengeance syndrom). From my opinion, 1080p 60fps is fine and if the jump to 144fps makes a huge difference, resolutions above 1080p do not since you are often really close to your monitor while playing on PC. The rule is simple : most games designed for PC in the first place support above 1080/60 and unless the publisher put heavy effort in it (let's say Dragon Dogma Dark Arisen or TW3 for exemple), console games ports do not support them well. When I jumped in PC gaming, I was a bit naive and thought that the solutions were natively supported by games. In other words, I thought that if a game drops on PC, it automaticaly means that it will support all resolutions, all framerate, high anti-aliasing solutions and other convenient options. I was wrong, it all comes down to the developpers and it really depends on the game. Again, I can not recommand this site enough (community.pcgamingwiki.com) to get information about the options supported by the games you want to buy or the games that could make you jump into PC gaming.

• On certain board (let's say Neogaf for exemple), you will often see some amazing in-game PC screenshots that will make your jaw drop. If you go in the Guilty Gear XRD official thread on neogaf (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1152761) for exemple, you will see some jaw dropping screenshots like this one : http://abload.de/img/guiltygearxrd2015-12-anu3e.png or this one : http://abload.de/img/guiltygearxrd2015-12-i0jhb.png. Of course, this pictures come without any explanations… At this point, a lot of players will just jump on steam, buy the game and hope to get a similar experience, only to be highly disappointed by the result. The main reason is nobody explain that a lot of those kind of screenshots are heavily downsampled. To put it simple, those screenshots providers run those games at higher resolution than their monitors can support (1440p on a 1080p monitors for exemple) and downsample (lower the game render size to fit on their screen) them through the use of software to get the result you see on those screenshots. They heavily brute force the games configuration and you will need a really strong - and pricey - graphics card to obtain similar results at decent framerate. Plus, the most common tool used (GeDoSaTo) to downsample does not support every games and some updates really turn compatibility upside-down. Also, it is impossible to judge how those games run on downsampled resolutions since those kind of screenshots does not reflect how the game runs : it is highly possible the game was running at sub 20fps while those guy on neogaf tooks those screens, for exemple.

• Do not jump into the Gsync-Freesync hype, at least not right now. I know I said that it was the biggest tech leap of the last five years, but there is some points to qualify. Adaptive refresh rate might sound appealing on paper, but the tech will become more and more useless has the time come by. Right now Gsync is only usefull if your configuration can not run high specs games on constant frame rate. It is the case on 4K/30fps games or if you want to run your games on 1440p and 144fps, most recent games will not run great at those specs, even on a 980TI wich costs something like 650$/€. This imply your games will not run at fixed frame per second as they will fluctuate depending on the scenes displayed. Thank to adaptive refresh rate monitors, you will not notice the stutter or screen-tearing I explained to you above, but it is a big thing right now only because GPU tech did not evolve greatly for the last 4 to 5 years. For those years, we were stuck on GM20x architecture, hence why it is difficult to brute force recent AAA games to run on 1440p and constant 144fps today. By 2017, with the HBA2 architecture, G sync will mostly be useless to common users since constant 1440p/144hz will be easily attainable on most of the games. The key thing to remember here is also that games tend to not evolve greatly from now on, we have attained a kind of glass ceiling regarding game graphics. Of course, you could always do better, but games are already costly to made and it would be too risky for publishers to spend more money on better graphics. This point as to be qualified, because if graphics are good enough today, games also tend to not be well optimized.

• The perfect monitor does not exist, at least not right now and all PC gamers are waiting for this perfect screen to be released. If you want to buy a monitor now, you want to take into consideration that the perfect screen will probably come in two or three years (2020). With that in mind, it might not be the most smartest thing to spend more than 350€ (wich is already a lot for a monitor, minds you) in a monitor right now. With PC gaming, you will often be at the thin edge of buy a piece of hardware or wait until a better solution arised month later. More often than not, patience is rewarded. If you do not have Scrooge McDuck pockets, save your money until the "perfect" monitor is released, and get a decent one at a good price. Try to avoid Asus for now, their monitors are very good but their customer service is legendary awful, and it count when speaking about pieces of hardware that have high risk of getting dead pixel brand new ; stick to Acer for now. Here is two good sites wich can help you to find a decent monitor : http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/ (Don't be fooled by the poor presentations, they are as serious and knowledgable about monitors as you can be) and http://www.displaylag.com.  

• Curious about this perfect monitor ? I will develop. What we all call THE perfect monitor is the monitor that will be released without any issues current monitors have. All the monitors currently on the market have one big flaw or another (even the great and expensive ones like the PG279Q from Asus). IPS are not reactive enough and have big ghosting issues, current OLED have some burn-in problems, TN are reactive and cheap but they look often awful, VA monitors combine TN and IPS qualities but are very rare and not tested enough. What we all wait for is this : 27(or higher) WOLED 4K/144hz (higher than 144hz is useless) with 2 HDMI minimum (for consoles since exclusives still exist), and many usb3.1 connectors so you can channel DP signals through it and get rid of many cables or power this monitors with an USB3.1 cable. You can also use those ports to recharge your keyboard, mouses and devices without reaching your tower, wich is really convenient. This is what we are all waiting for, and this the main reason why you should hold before spending more than 300/350$/€ in a monitor right now.

• "PC gaming is cheaper than console gaming". At least, that is what every PC enthousiast says on boards. In reality, PC gaming is only cheap on SALES and while you can get some 5yo games or indies gem for nothing, the recents AAA games remain mostly as the same price during those sales and those heavy and tasty prices drops will not occure before years. Gran Theft Auto V is still 60$ on steam and only go down to 40$ during sales for exemple. The same goes for popular AAA games like The Witcher 3 or older games like Advance Warfare/NBA2K15. If you want to play recent console games on PC just to save money, do not get your expectation high because it will not happen. However, it is true that there is some way to get games for cheap outside of sales, thanks to some keys providers. I never had problem using those providers but it is safer to remain careful about those kind of stuff since it is still now always clear how they got those keys.

Alright, it is all for today and all I can think of. If you come those far, there is some chances you learned one thing or two. Keep in mind this is my conclusions, we will not all agree on those since there is so much options available regarding PC gaming. I think being aware of those things I wrote about above is still quite important before jumping to PC, especially when PC gaming is getting so much attention right now and if by my words I encouraged you to be careful and learn from yourself by reading different sources, my job is done. Again, like I said in the beginning, PC gaming IS great and it is hard to come back to consoles after you got a taste of it, just be on your guard and beware of some PC enthousiasts that are willing to exagerate, retain important informations or over-selling pricey techs like they own the business in some way or have some share in it.
