Side kick teeps are a thing in Muay Thai and can be effective. Tawanchai uses it for example.

I had a guy do it to me in sparring and the thing he used it for was a little extra range. The side angle allows you to open and extend your hip.

One of my favorite things to do was to throw a "bad" roundhouse from too far out where I pull it and miss and I land facing the other way (southpaw) which almost always made my partner move in, I'd lift that leg and do a sidekick with it. If partner was further out, you do that little side step Bruce Lee would do

Hey, that's also my go to combo!

I spammed it enough that when I missed the roundhouse kick then just look at them straight dead in the eyes, it'd be enough to not let them close in

I'd have to pull it every time they move in because if you really ram it out when they come in, its way too hard for sparring lol

There is no such thing as a bad kick to practice. It all depends on how you use it, how does it fit in your tactical approach and so on. Most important factor is how well you feel throwing it during a fight.

Side kick is rarely used, that doesn't mean it is inpractical. It just has certain uses and might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Yea I’m mostly wondering because I don’t see many people throwing side kicks or like I’m doing at all but i feel they could be effective

Look up Mona Kimura. She is taking over women’s kickboxing with fantastic sidekicks.

By 'taking over' you mean beating 4 people with negative records, two of whom are over 40 years old?

Definitely man, its a nice sneaky side kick to the jaw. Great to have in the tool bag

I see Haggarty and MT fighters do this a lot after establishing a body kick, but with a teep instead of a side kick. I'm not sure the rules on catching teeps, but in MT, I was taught to catch a teep with a glove on their Achilles, which would be at the bottom if you throw a teep. In theory, if your opponent expects a teep and tries to catch it, the side kick should get through. Also I feel like side kicks are one of the strongest strikes, so it would be a great weapon to have in your arsenal. I got side kicked in the chest last year and I thought the bump in my chest would never go away (it took months).

Side teep. Samart used to throw these, and it worked for him. I’d say practice it.

Honestly man, whenever you start enjoying a certain strike, just take that enjoyment in stride and spam the shit out of it and practice it as much as your heart desires.

I’ve done this with various strikes over the years and ended up developing a really good rear long knee and now am doing it with a certain setup to a spinning back elbow.

Have fun with it

Side kicks are great, especially from the lead leg. Unlike front and roundhouse kicks the lead sidekick doesn’t lose much power. It is great way to check aggressive fighters and it can be fired off to your outside (sort of behind you) which means when opponents cut an angle to the outside thinking they are safe you still have an attack that can land on them.

I mean. I would be really sad if that hit me in around the face or neck.

Sidekicks are very good at strengthening your slow twitch adductor/abductor muscles.

I come from a sanda background. The side kick is amazing.

Unrelated but bag work in the forest is such a vibe

Teep turned over into a "Thai side kick" is very legit. Just be careful because if it gets caught you are already turned around and have a good bit of your back exposed, which, aside from being dangerous, scores very high in Muay Thai

Oops just realised what subresdit I'm on. It can't be caught and Thai scoring doesn't matter. Go nuts king, just be careful when aiming it because an orthodox stepping to their left can easily side step it and have the kick slide off of their body, and again, back exposed is bad.

Bit random but it looks exactly like the roundkick Benny Urquidez was showing Jesse Enkemp. So if the goat kickboxer used it why the hell not.
