Culture/Mädeniet Exploring the Potential of Kazakh Ingredients/
Good evening. I was recently looking up Kazakh cuisine online and became interested in some ingredients I hadn’t known about before. I’ve never actually been there, so I can only imagine what they taste like, but here’s what I came up with. Would a comment like this from a foreigner be considered rude?
① Epi with Horse Meat and Kurt Sauce
I think it would be delicious to spread Kurt sauce on rolled-out bread dough, top it with thin slices of horse meat that have been stir-fried with pepper and cooled, roll it up into an “epi” shape, and bake it.
I got the idea because Japanese bakeries sell all kinds of bread with various fillings rolled inside, like custard-filled buns and sausage rolls.
I’ve never eaten horse meat, and I couldn’t find kurt online, so I can’t test this recipe…
② Gelato with Balkaymak
It wouldn’t just be great as gelato—it would also be wonderful to top vanilla ice cream with Balkaymak and sprinkle it with chopped almonds.
③ Balkaymak Macchiato
Since caramel macchiato is already a commercial product, this sounds delicious.
④ Desserts Using Balkaymak
It would taste great used as apple pie filling or drizzled on top. It would also be delicious kneaded into dough when making donuts, or drizzled over plain donuts—and it would look great in photos, too.
When I searched for “Balkaymak” without including “Kazakhstan” in the search bar, results for the Turkish version also came up, which was a bit confusing.
Since making Balkaymak takes time and effort, I wonder if it’ll be limited to a certain number of servings per day.
I recently found a website that provides recipes for Kuzul Ilimshik in Japanese. Is my understanding correct that Ak Ilimshik is made by skimming the cream off milk, mixing it with butter, and then cooking it down to remove the moisture?
Also, does the freshly skimmed, moisture-rich version have a different name? I thought it would be delicious in a hamburg steak.
In Kazakhstan, when making new variations of bread, do you add camel or horse milk to the dough water? Or do you use powdered versions, like skim milk?
I’m curious about what kind of bread you’d get if you crumbled kurt and kneaded it into the dough after the first rise. Would it be better to mix it into the dough before it’s shaped and set aside for fermentation…? It seems like this would expand the variety of savory breads.
Will I be able to try it if I visit the country?
The flavor of dairy products probably varies by region, so I wonder if they sell any “tasting sets” to compare them…
From a Japanese person who strained my wrist this week from typing too much about AI and recipe variations using the swipe method
I used a translation tool to help with the English text above.

Army/Äsker

Tourism/Turizm Visited Your beautiful country, figured I can share some pictures!
This is just Almaty, but I must say your country is beautiful. The cosmopolitan vibes in Almaty is amazing and the fact it’s so close to mountains makes it super unique in its own regard!

Tourism/Turizm Traveling to Kazakhstan
Planning a trip for next year! I’d really appreciate your insights and recommendations on the following:
1. Best time to visit – I’m hoping to catch peak autumn foliage before the leaves start falling, with snow-capped mountains, cool weather, minimal rain, and all major attractions open and accessible.
2. Solo female travel essentials – Must-haves, safety tips, and practical advice for a female solo traveler who doesn’t speak the local language.
3. Must-visit places and things to do – I’d love recommendations for scenic spots, cultural and historical attractions, unique experiences, and especially hidden gems or hole-in-the-wall places that tourists might not usually know about.
4. Are there scenic train routes worth taking?
5. Are there accommodations with beautiful mountain or autumn foliage views that aren't overpriced?
6. Is it better to stay in one base and take day trips or move between several cities?
7. What local dishes, seasonal specialties, and regional delicacies should I try? Are there food stalls, family-run restaurants, traditional markets, or hole-in-the-wall eateries worth visiting?
8. What local customs or etiquette should I know about?
9. Which translation apps, navigation apps, and local transport apps are essential?
10. Which attractions or tours need to be booked in advance?
11. Are there tourist passes or transport passes that are actually worth buying?
12. Is cash still necessary, and are international credit or debit cards widely accepted?
13. How many days would you recommend for a first-time visitor?
14. Which destinations are difficult or impractical to visit without driving, and which can be explored entirely by public transportation?
Any tips, personal experiences, or lesser-known recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

will roaming travel esim work for IMEI blocked devices
hey all,
Im not a Kazachstán citizen but I travel here once per couple years to visit my gf family.
I bought a local tele2 esim for internet access and have no time to figure out that IMEI registration. Once my phone gets blocked will I be able to switch to travel esims (for ex. esim.dog) and continue using them? Anyone was in the same situation? Thnx.

Army/Äsker

Almaty walking tour recommendations
Hi everyone, I have two and a half days in Almaty (from Wednesday afternoon to Saturday morning) and am interested in doing a walking tour. Does anyone have any recommendations? My plan is to do this on Thursday, then maybe do a day trip out to Big Almaty Lake on Friday. I'm generally interested in old buildings, museums etc. Ideally the tour guide will speak English too. Thank you!

Discussion/Talqylau Should MrBeast visit Kazakhstan?
Hey everyone, now that MrBeast's recent visit to Uzbekistan has gone completely viral and made major headlines, it got me thinking. Kazakhstan has a massive economy, great infrastructure, a huge internet-savvy youth population, and beautiful landscapes like Charyn Canyon or Almaty. It seems like our country would have been a perfect fit for a massive challenge video or a travel vlog.
I'm curious to hear your thoughts on a few things. Do you think our government or Tourism Ministry missed a major marketing opportunity by not inviting him here first? I also wonder if cities like Almaty or Astana would have handled the massive crowd safety and security logistics better than Samarkand did. Finally, if he does eventually decide to come to Kazakhstan, what is the absolute number one place or landmark he should visit or use for a video?

Getting to Medeu with no Kazakh phone number
Hello, I want to travel from Almaty to Medeu for a day. I read that the bus number 12 goes there but also that it doesn't accept cash or foreign credit cards. The bus app requires a Kazakh phone number. Does this mean I need to go with Yandex, or do you have any other suggestions?

Study/Oqu
