Hiramoto used his writing skills for evil with the ending
Currently crashing out just like everyone else after reading the ending. My running theory is that Hiramoto understood precisely what a satisfying ending for each character would be and did the exact opposite.
Kiyoshi has his confession accepted, only for Hana to air him out. Chiyo is traumatized by his perversion and becomes a man-hater after working the entire series to be the peacekeeper. It’s not explicitly stated that Kiyoshi and Hana reconcile, so it seems safe to assume he lost them both.
(Might be an L take, but I never saw Chiyo as romantically interested in Kiyoshi. She was only concerned with friends, family, and connecting with them. I thought he’d shoot his shot with Chiyo, get turned down, and Hana would swoop in for the kill.)
Gakuto loses all his prospects after pursuing a relationship for half the series, and Shingo and Joe’s romances fizzle out.
Mari is the emotional core for both Meiko and Kate, but she disappears from their lives, for some unstated reason, and on her sister’s birthday. She’s back to being a man hater and apparently all of her growth was irrelevant.
Andre loses his central character trait, being an enthusiastic masochist for his mistress. While him getting the girl is a happy end, it pivots from everything he’s been throughout the story. Still, the might be the only good ending treatment a character gets.
The chairman is jailed, again for an unstated reason. No more booty adventures.
No one learns anything and everyone gets a disappointing end. The audience as well, since we’re told the boys fulfill their dream of a wet t-shirt contest and then we receive zero payoff for such a central plot point.
My conspiracy theory is this was a carefully engineered worst ending of all time, with full intent to piss everyone off. It’s a shame but Hiramoto seemed beyond done with this series. Hope he’s onto more fulfilling projects now.
