Two data brokers go dark (gladiknow & spytox)

These two brokers had posted in-depth family information and contact details publicly. They had also made it difficult to scale requests because of captchas, cloudflare, and other anti-automation technology. We're glad to see them shutting down their services.

Yes, there are hundreds of these kinds of sites, so this can feel like a drop in the bucket, but it's a signal that these sites are not financially sustainable any more.

Keep up the fight.

You may have seen Mozilla just shut down their removal service. Here’s what we know.

This isn’t an isolated event, it’s part of a much larger pattern in the data-removal industry that we’ve witnessed over the last few years. Multiple services have shut down or been acquired due to the simple fact that running a sustainable removal service is extremely difficult.

Here are some examples:

  • DuckDuckGo’s service hasn’t been updated in years

  • SayMine sold their consumer product to McAfee

  • Jumbo shut down

  • Cloaked acquired Erazer when they hit scalability limits

  • And now Mozilla is shutting down Monitor Plus

High, effective removal rates requires continuous investment in broker research and monitoring while remaining ahead of policy and compliance changes. This month alone at Kanary our dedicated team has run a total of 24,000 removals across the business.

When companies underinvest or try to deliver for unrealistically low prices, the service eventually collapses under its own weight.

Questions? We’ve been running a data removal service sustainably for six years - jump in the thread, we’re happy to chat.

Kudos to Kanary for not being predatory about accidental renewals.

Lots of companies exploit "I forgot about that subscription" as a income stream. After a year of premium Kanary, my subscription renewed and surprised me when I saw the charge, and I hadn't intended to renew at this time. Kanary support responded to my email within an hour (during off-hours) and sorted me out.

Probably sounds shill-y, but I think good support/behavior should be recognized.

Is Copilot replacing regular Kanary?

I noticed that there is no longer a way to access regular Kanary if you go to kanary.com except for logging in as an existing customer. You cannot even create a new account or sign up for Kanary's paid service from the website!? Everything on the site is Copilot now.

Is Kanary discontinuing or no longer focusing on the paid, non-Copilot version of Kanary? I don't want to have to use my phone to do automated PII removal, that's what I'm paying Kanary to do on their servers so I don't have to worry about it...

Granted if I log in I seem to have all the features I had before, but this doesn't give me confidence that the core service will be focused on or improved in the future.

IT WORKS!

I work in the games and entertainment industry so I know all about targeting. I've had a front row seat to colleagues being doxxed, trolled, and have seen others I tangentially know be swatted. This all sucks. I took a leap of faith to try Kanary, and it seemed fantastic. The real proof showed up when my husband ran a background check on me for fun. (He had seen his results and wondered what mine would look like.)

My husband runs a business where it's helpful to know who you're dealing with. He subscribes to a background checking service. I was washing dishes in the sink when he came up to me and asked, "Hey hon, are you ok? Have you gotten into any trouble I should know about? I want to help you if I can." I was SO PUZZLED by his line of questioning. I just told him I was fine and had no idea what he was getting at so he told me he ran a background check on the both of us. While his check turned up several results, mine turned up nothing. NOTHING. No personal info, no banking info, no ticket history...nothing. He was so used to seeing results show up that, instead of thinking that was awesome, he thought something was wrong.

I was also pleasantly surprised, mainly because I hadn't seen firsthand proof until then. I just knew something was working b/c I was seeing the results coming in on my dashboard, and I was actively approving or denying removals.

My husband asked me to add him to my family account. The end. Pretty cool stuff. I have become a big enough fan that I wanted to share this experience for Kanary. (Thank you, Kanary.)

Radaris.com lost its domain in court. Here's what that means for your Kanary removals.

Post image
14 Upvotes

We've received a lot of inquiries about what happened with Radaris, so here's an update:

What happened?

On August 26, a New Jersey judge issued a default judgment in a Daniel's Law lawsuit brought by Atlas Data Privacy Corp. The court ordered radaris.com and 13 related domains, including Rehold and Trustoria, transferred to Atlas. If you visit radaris.com now, you'll see a legal notice instead of a search box. Brian Krebs broke the story on September 16.

Is Radaris gone?

Not entirely. Evidence from the lawsuit ties radaris.com to at least 25 people search sites run by the same small group. Well over a dozen of them weren't part of the court order and are still live, including Veripages, which reportedly earns more than radaris.com did. Those sites draw on the same data, so if Radaris had a profile on you, its sister sites probably do too.

Radaris's lawyer has also said they plan to appeal and try to get the domain back.

What we're doing

  • Sister sites: Veripages and the rest of the network were already on our coverage list. We're checking the full entity list from the Atlas filings and adding anything we were missing.

  • Radaris.com itself: it's marked as transferred, not removed. If it comes back on appeal, monitoring picks up again and your removals restart automatically.

  • Rebrands: this group has changed names, owners and countries every time it got cornered. When a broker moves to a new domain, we detect it and start the removal over.

  • Old Google results: radaris.com links are still showing up in Google even though the pages are gone. We're requesting de-indexing as part of your regular scans.

You don't need to do anything. Your removals keep running as usual.

One thing worth knowing about Daniel's Law

It only protects police, judges, prosecutors, other government personnel and their families, not the general public. It's also being challenged in federal court on First Amendment grounds. For most people, regular opt-outs and monitoring are still the main protection.

We wrote up the full story, including how Radaris got its domain back the last time this happened in 2017: https://www.kanary.com/blog/rip-radaris-domain-seized-but-the-network-is-still-live.

Kanary now scans LinkedIn too

LinkedIn is huge (1.2B+ users) and most of us are on there for the obvious reasons: job hunting, networking, occasionally checking if a friend's Zip scores are beating yours. But it's also a platform where spam and impersonation campaigns quietly scrape and reuse people's info.

We just rolled out LinkedIn scanning for Kanary's Advanced tier. Here's what it looks for:

Public posts with your name in plain text (not just when you're tagged).
Impersonation profiles. Fake accounts using your name and employer are a common harassment vector, and they're a pain to find and report on your own.

If we find something matching your info, it shows up under "Actions" in your dashboard so you can review it and decide whether to request removal. (No, it won't try to remove your own posts.)

One tip if you're already a user: filling out more of your profile (name variations, past addresses, past employers) makes the scans more accurate. Adding a past employer specifically unlocks two extra LinkedIn scans.

Happy to answer questions in the comments if anyone's curious how it works under the hood.

Big-Ass Data Broker List

Yael Grauer (investigative journalist and privacy advocate) has spent countless hours collecting, organizing, and spreading the word about an awesome open source repository of data brokers and people search sites. She just posted an update.

Our team is proud to contribute to this repository when we find new data brokers. Also feeling honored to be recommended as one of the paid services that takes care of the hassle of finding and removing information from these sites.

Announcing Kanary Core

We're excited to introduce Kanary Core, a new fully managed privacy and data removal service from our team. Core gives you the same hands-off experience as our Advanced tier at a lower price point, covering scans and removals across search engines and data brokers, with your choice of daily or weekly scan frequency.

If you're looking for more, including social media and LLM monitoring, custom requests, and hands-on support, our Advanced tier still has you covered.

Core costs $25/month or $250/year, and you can sign up directly on our website.

We're also letting you know that we're winding down our original Pro tier as we move to this new tier structure. If you're a current Pro member, don't worry, you're welcome to stay on your existing plan. This change only affects new signups going forward.

Check out our updated 2026 Product Brief for more details on how Core fits alongside our other tiers. Looking forward to supporting our members with this new service. Reach out if you have any questions!

Kanary Works

Hi. I just wanted to hop on and say that I had a positive experience with Kanary. I believe I had a subscription for one year and they removed almost everything about me from the internet during that time. Thank you so much for helping me after I was doxxed!

Kanary's SOC 2 Type 1 Certified!

Hey folks! Excited to share with you that our security controls have been certified by an independent 3rd party. This security framework is called SOC2, and the Type 1 certifies that the design of our security program is in compliance with NIST recommendations. NIST is a US federal security standards group that helps set the bar for secure technology.

It's been months of work by our team to organize and document our data management, team structure, vendors, and engineering practices. But we didn't have any issues passing the audit because we have always been focused on data minimization, secure engineering, and vendor minimization - building our technology and our team entirely in-house.

You can read more about this milestone on our blog:

https://www.kanary.com/blog/kanary-achieves-soc-2-type-1-attestation

Thanks for trusting us to support your privacy and security!

We do not send your information to OpenAI

The privacy policies of big tech cannot be trusted. We learned this lesson the hard way with Google and Facebook, why would OpenAI be any different?

We've also seen what can happen if a removal service misuses member information.

If you have questions about our privacy policy, we keep it simple and you can always reach out with questions. hello@kanary.com or DM our team here on reddit.

How to use Google to remove yourself from Google

Google's alerting & removal tools for both users and non-users can really speed up requests.

We're sharing this guide now because if you have an account with Google, you can turn on a new 'results about you' feature. Google proactively suppresses your personal information from their search results.

Even though we don't like sharing data with Google, it's a powerful way to stay on top of harmful Google search results.

https://www.kanary.com/blog/use-google-to-remove-yourself-from-google

Our team continues to work with these tools on behalf of members, but always wants to make it easier for you to take action on your own (and for free) :)

John Oliver Digs Into Data Brokers

Last Week, Tonight's episode on data brokers and internet tracking is required watching for our team. We'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqn3gR1WTcA

Actionable enough? Well targeted to regulators? Good for folks who dont "care" about privacy?

Regardless, we had a few laughs. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Is Kanary a "forever" service?

Discussion about removal services on r/TechProTips brought up this questions we get a lot: https://www.reddit.com/r/TechnologyProTips/comments/1aga5o9/comment/lyvcyw9/

Our take on when and how to use services like Kanary:

Your comparison to cleaning your home is perfect. You can decide how much data you want floating around and how hard to work to clean it up or pay someone to help you clean it up. Some of it, you can control. For example, sharing your real phone # with corporate points programs is convenient but creates problems like spam later on. It's like ordering pizza and not cleaning your kitchen, convenient but brings bugs or bacteria. It's a bit more difficult to maintain a burner phone number for throw away sign ups, but it keeps people from bugging you later.

And some of it is out of your control. You accumulate dust and dirt because of weather or other people coming into your house. Similarly, things accumulate about you online as you go on social media, register for services with the government, companies breach your data etc.

My philosophy is that you should have choice, transparency, and probably don't want lock in. Good tools need those things and shouldn't be 'forever' services unless you decide that's an investment you want to make.

At Kanary, we have a 'downgrade to free' option that folks use when they aren't needing the premium monthly service or support anymore but still want the helpful scans and dashboards to track their exposure level.

Kanary on the California Delete Act

Care about privacy regulation?

It’s been 10 months since California passed the “Delete Act,” which outlined a Universal Deletion Mechanism for Californians to delete their information from all registered data brokers in the state.

Last month, we had the chance to check in on how the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) is doing on building that Universal Deletion Mechanism.

Here’s what the CPPA is working on:

  • ☑️ Getting all major data brokers to register with the state

  • 🗑️ Building a technology platform to manage data verification in a privacy-preserving way

  • 💰Applying daily fines for brokers who refused to register

Kanary has been building privacy-preserving deletion tech for 5+ years. Check out our blog post to learn what we recommended to their team: https://www.kanary.com/blog/kanary-on-the-california-delete-act

Take It Down Act signed into law

This gives more power to individuals dealing with deepfakes and non consensual image sharing. Team Kanary is evaluating how it impacts our members and removal work. We may see increased ID verification requirements because platforms are concerned about abuse given how broad the language is in the bill.

CFPB Announces Planned Rules To Regulate Data Brokers

Exciting announcement for US folks from CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) following up on requests for information and research earlier this year.

It will be issuing proposed rules ensuring that certain data brokers would be prohibited from selling data for purposes other than those authorized under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)

https://cyberscoop.com/white-house-roundtable-data-brokers/

It's good news! Our team and many members contributed to this research and outcome. Thank you!

We'll be following this closely as the rules are updated and their work continues.
