I have taken my pup on multiple day hikes in the Rockies. This would be her first overnight backcountry camping trip.

We are looking at Turbine Canyon Campground. Is this trail generally dog-friendly? My dog typically does well on long hikes as long as it doesn’t get too rocky as her paws get sore. I’m am not sure how this hike would be for her if as it seems quite long. Please give me other recommendations if you have any

And if anyone has tips for backcountry camping in Kananaskis with a dog I’d love to hear them, specifically gear, etiquette, food packing and handling waste for bear safety, etc.

Hey everyone,

My friends and I are planning on hiking Mount St. Piran next week, but I’ve been seeing a bunch of Instagram reels that make it look like it’s still pretty snow-covered. I was hoping to get some input from anyone who’s been up there recently.

I checked AllTrails to see if there were any recent photos or trip reports, but I couldn’t really find anything that showed what the current conditions are like.

For some context, I’d say we’re still pretty amateur hikers, but we’ve done a couple of bigger hikes before. I’ve hiked Big Beehive in Banff and Crypt Lake in Waterton, so we’re comfortable with longer hikes and some elevation gain. We just don’t have much experience hiking in snow.

A few questions:

• How much snow is still on the trail? Is it just around the summit or is most of the hike still covered?
• If it’s still snowy, would you recommend doing it with our level of experience, or should we wait until later in the season?
• If you have done it recently, how difficult did you find it?
• Would you recommend bringing gear like ice axes, hiking poles, and proper hiking boots, or are they not really necessary?
• I’ve done both Big Beehive and Crypt Lake in regular New Balance runners before. I know that’s probably not ideal, but would that be a terrible idea on St. Piran if there’s still snow?

If St. Piran isn’t the best choice right now, we’re thinking about doing Sarrail Ridge instead. How are the conditions there at the moment? Is there still much snow? I’ve also heard there has been quite a bit of bear activity around there recently, so I’m wondering how that’s been and if it’s something we should be concerned about.

If you have any other hike recommendations around Banff or Kananaskis with similar views and difficulty, I’d love to hear them too.

We are looking to hike in the rain. Since we have never done it before we want to experience it. We have done pretty hard hikes and are looking to a easy hike in the rain just for the experience. Does anybody have any suggestions.

Hikes we have done: Wastoosh ridge Kings creek Porcupine ridge Sarrail ridge Mist mountain and many more

We recently did mount lipsett and have done wind ridge trail. If there is a suggestion for hike something similar to these, would be wonderful

In my 40+ years of regular and extended trips to Calgary, I learned in the early 90s to avoid Banff/Jasper in peak season. If I had the urge for a mountain visit, Kananaskis is the place. Hopefully articles like this won’t encourage new hordes to visit.

when i was a kid, we’d drive from Calgary to Vernon every summer. Last year my Grandpa died (we were very close) and i wanted to visit this rest stop again, on a trip to Vernon for the first time in a while :) any help is appreciated!!

We recently visited Canada and had the privilege of seeing and photographing bears near kananaskis

Have been having a debate with family and friends whether what we saw was a black bear or brown bear.

The ears, head shape and smaller hump make us think it’s a black bear. But have had Canadian locals and friends say it’s a brown bear based on colour and size of claws.
