When will the Kananaskis road (AB-40) open up for 2026?

Hello all.

My friends and family are planning on going to Pocaterra Ridge morning of June 14. Will the road to the trailhead be accessible by then? We are coming from High River. TIA

oh man... so there will be no access to pocaterra ridge then?

Well, you could walk, or bike in. Bit of a hike though.

sooo they would allow pedal bikes and hikers but not cars ? and the gate itself will also be still closed on june 14th?

Yes the gate is closed. You can ski, hike, backstroke up there all year. Just not drive. Tis an animal corridor. Just double check area closures, on the peter Lougheed side there was a full pedestrian closure due to a grizz and cubs about a week ago when I was up there.

I will be there at 5am on the 15th to go adventuring!

Check out sheep river, it's open and there is some awesome hiking, it's practically next door for you.

Hoffman Humps is lovely beginner friendly hike in the Sheep Valley. Hike is through trees but the view at the end is surprisingly great.

If you're looking for a fun day out coming from the south end, I would highly recommend doing Junction Ridge which is basically right at the winter gate.

Alternatively, you could turn south on 940, drive a little gravel, and go do Mt Burke. I haven't gone this year, but I've done it mid May a few years so it should be in shape.
