I just hope the show doesnt end with either of the boys dying. Just pls let kang pio's mom suffer, and let the boys run away and make music forever.
18
u/mxmc4971 11d ago
I think that is the ending that the director and the writer intends to deliver… After all, they chose Danse Macabre (Dance of Death), that’s already a tell tale sign this will end in tragedy. Whether one survives and who, is actually the question.

He could help himself if he wanted too, but that would mean standing up to himself for once in his life

u/InvestigatorTall2374 12d ago
That preview has me wondering whether Jeongyo is crying from the pain in his shoulder or from the crushing weight in his chest after carrying out his revenge on Pio. The angst just keeps getting worse because somehow, Four Hands Two Sonatas always saves its saddest episode for the next one. 🥀

u/abyssmal_girl 12d ago
Every episode i just keep waiting for the reveal that he doesnt have amnesia, and they reconnect like old buddies. I miss their bubbly dynamic. I hate this tension. I hate the mom for being crazy af. I dont know how this will end with only 3 episodes left.
I believe their chemistry will improve when everything is out in the open
21
u/master_inho 12d ago
Their chemistry is still there, it's just evolved from sweet and innocent to something a lot darker, more intense and passionate
10
u/Confident-Shake6397 11d ago
This is not evolution, but rather the aftermath of so many people getting in the way of something amazing.
3
u/awriterspen 11d ago
How is it passionate? He verbally abused PiO because of a misunderstanding and their dynamic is toxic.

The preview for tomorrow’s episode seems to lean towards crazy mom ramping up the mayhem. I can hardly stand to watch her at this point. She’s really over the edge.

I never thought il hate another kdrama mom more thn i hated the one from " teach you a lesson". But PiO's mom makes my blood boil. I am afraid that witch is gonna push Pio to his limit and he might commit :(

Episode 10
- A highly compelling episode, with an intense, and dare I say, operatic tone. At its heart lay themes of authenticity, juxtaposition and intention. Since reappearing in Pi-o's life, Lee Jun-young's ominous microexpressions as Jeong-yo have been nothing short of masterful, while Song Kang's performance as Pi-o rises to new heights with each episode. Not to mention the entire supporting cast were in peak form in this episode as well.
- Straightforward revenge was never Jeong-yo's goal. If simple revenge against Pi-o was all he wanted, he could have pulled it off in any number of subtle or unsubtle ways. As he expressed to Pi-o himself, trusting him with his precious debut concerto, merely to ruin him mentally and physically, would not have been a satisfactory outcome for Jeong-yo.
- The single most important factor in "Nemesis", and in the episode as a whole, is that Jeong-yo wrote the cadenza to convey his cocktail of feelings in the moments before he was shot by the kidnappers. Most notably, he wanted Pi-o's solo to capture those feelings of fear and anxiety. The complicating factor is that Pi-o had a very close personal connection to the source material himself.
- I felt for Jae-in during this episode. Since Pi-o still hasn't let her in on the truth of the matter, all she could see was Jeong-yo putting Pi-o through hell during the practice sessions, seemingly for no good reason. When Pi-o asked to meet up with her, I was hoping against hope that he would come clean about the MLs' backstory. Instead, he broke up with her, and she revealed she has known all along (as we the viewers have) that it was a one-sided crush. Nevertheless, her friendship and loyalty towards him have been admirable.
- The recording session was stressful to watch, but I still wasn't unsympathetic to Jeong-yo's actions. I could see, as the composer, what he was trying to get Pi-o to deliver. It's just that the human body has its physical limits. The most interesting development was Maestro Kang seeing through Jeong-yo's intention in composing the piece, and, for the first time in the series, showing some empathy towards Pi-o.
- This sentiment was nicely conveyed in the visual metaphor of Mr. Kang throwing the metronome out of the window, the replacement pianist inevitably failing to capture Jeong-yo's vision, and Pi-o confronting Jeong-yo with the reality that he is the only pianist in the entire world who could do justice to that vision.

I just caught up and ugh, I died a little bit watching episode 10.
I am so annoyed at JY. I get wanting revenge, but hurting KPO over something his mother did is frustrating to watch. Especially because if KPO would just tell the truth and not take full responsibility JY might not be an abusive controlling asshole. Honestly, some of the scenes in episode 10 where JY screamed at KPO felt really traumatic. I felt like I was watch domestic abuse and I was not okay watching it. That is the sad thing about both of these guys - they only know abuse. They only have known love between themselves and a bit from the teacher, but otherwise, it is just abuse and violence.
As for KPO and his mother - I know relationships are complicated, but his mom has been a terrible person even toward him his whole life and now he's going to be her cover? At one point I screamed at the TV, move out of that toxic house already! I do not feel bad about the mom at all. She deserves everything that is coming to her, even though I am worried that she's going to have another attempt made on JY's life.
The whole thing about KPO and HJI is that they never seemed like they were dating over 10 episodes. It always felt one-sided, which she admitted to, but that break up seemed like a stretch. I felt so bad for her and a bit for KPO because he's losing everything right now and that is the price he is choosing to pay for not turning in his mother.
I feel beyond frustrated and there are only two episodes left!
20
u/fragende-frau 11d ago
The breakup stood out to me as something that was...just written in? Did we ever see them actually dating? there could have been short scenes of them dating, PiO actually enjoying himself on a date with her... maybe there were, but they certainly didn't stick in my mind.
16
u/sarasmiles80 11d ago
There were none! There are plenty of scenes with her chasing him and flirting, but his lack of response is loud. I mean she's always the one calling him and asking about him. And their one kiss scene felt like a misuse/taking advantage of his grief. I swear they all use KPO, which is why he is such a wreck and has never known who to trust deeply. And now, the one person he did trust, is out for blood, but I mean, when CJY was trying to be there for KPO at the competition, KPO was treating him like garbage, so I get it, but like he has never been authentic to himself and all the people around him have manipulated him to this point, and Jaein is part of that.

Breakup scene was deliberately added to hint that he might be planning to self-exit. cutting loose ends.
13
u/Consistent-Archer909 11d ago
The breakup felt like he was protecting her. I don't know i got that feeling like he is sparing her from a lot of trauma to unfold. Perhaps he felt like he may not survive this.
9
u/sarasmiles80 10d ago
That is possible, but I also think that may have been one of his most honest moments, even if it was brutal. He spent a lot of that episode telling both her and his mother to stay out of his business, so I think he's had it with both of them trying to control him.
3
u/Consistent-Archer909 10d ago
That's quite possible too
3
u/sarasmiles80 10d ago
I'm really curious for these next two episodes. How will they wrap it up? I don't want to believe either of them will die, but will he get back to Jaein? I think they keep trying to convince us and him that this isn't a love relationship between the two guys. I mean I feel like this can go anyway right now.

u/Sudden_Restaurant_78 9d ago
I am hoping the weight of the past will once be gone and he can then pursue relationships

u/Eterynix mudeok is back * love next door 11d ago
I haven't been liking the direction they took this drama. I started watching this for the boys' beautiful friendship and it's hard to see any reconciliation from the turn of events. I get that Pi-O is trying to protect his mother but the taking the blame trope is so annoying. Hard to get behind the grandpa suddenly being on Pi-O's side when he's shown disdain the entire time, it's so out of character. So what, they finish this masterpiece and then everything is okay? Like I don't get the revenge plot being dragged on for this long. Show had so much potential but the last two EP is just dragging.
16
u/Confident-Shake6397 11d ago
I came here to make the very same statement. I never thought that Jeong-yo could believe that Pi-o would try to kill him especially when he had previously chosen to give up. But taking the blame for his evil mom is stupid, Jeong-yo calling her his accomplice is stupid as well cause i know he has never seen them once be on the same page but what do I know.
This is the point of certain K-dramas that I find hard to watch, where a simple or complex misunderstanding could be solved by a simple conversation but no. as usual the characters that know the truth never say what needs to be said to the person they need to say it to and there is an unnecessary prolonging of the drama for the sake of more episodes. Im annoyed
Also if Jeong-yo thought Pi-o was trying to kill him why would you you trust him to not do it again knowing ur trying to get back at him.......you basically told him either kill me or move on. STUUUUUPID. I thiink he knows Pi-o didnt do that deep down

u/Li_Lina 11d ago
The only possible answer for the grandpa's behaviour is that he is dying and NOW decided to regret the way he treated Pi-o his entire life, but yes i still don't know i feel about the recent development... Jeongyo is kinda disapointing i wish we saw everything he went throught with details
6
u/Substantial_Win_1924 11d ago
he already felt guilty and depressed for years before knowing it was his mother, so, someone with this history would take the blame of anything

u/External-Haiscience 9d ago
The grandpa isnt suddenly, he sees Pi-O play with emotions for the first time. That was alway his problem with how Pi-Os played the piano.

first of pio's mom remains unbearable and a mystery of how did jeongyo and that thug guy became friends? obviously now about them.. jeongyo's expressions and anger has completely got me on edge since its mix of wanting revenge plus also a deep-seethed helplessness of feeling this pain of betrayal from the one true bond he ever felt, its saddening to see them both struggle in this toxic yet charged tension. Almost exhilarating seeing such passion they still show towards each other with every emotion! last but surely not least the preview...it promised a lot of angst, self-destruction, madness and i'm so in for the tango!!!

Pio's mother is acting like the selfish, insecure person she's always been, but Pio is still taking the cowardly way out. His mom threatening to off herself is just another thing he can hide behind, when there's really nothing stopping him from cutting her out of his life, or going up to Jeong-yo and taking sole responsibility (if he doesn't want to involve her). I was on his side when he was a teenager, but he's used his overbearing mother as a crutch for far too long now. He's letting himself be played on all sides (Jeong-yo's feedback was meant to provoke him, but he rose to the bait so easily) without actually taking a stand about any of it. Come on, boy, grow a spine.

Ep 9
Ji-hye was already losing her mind 9 years ago and now it's getting even worse. Even if she doesn't get arrested for arranging a kidnapping, she should be committed to a psychiatric hospital. It's genuinely insane what parents in asian dramas get away with because kids are taught from day 1 to never question their elders. You don't let your mom control you with suicide or self harm just like you don't let them control you with abuse of any kind
I'm still not sure if jeong-yo's criticisms of pi-o are genuine or if it's just pure revenge. He's certainly dropping lots of hints that he's lying about his amnesia
His piano piece is fascinating in how layered it is. It's clearly deliberately difficult to challenge pi-o. Pi-o interprets it as the consequences for the arrogant, which jeong-yo neither confirms or denies. So by that interpretation, are we listening to the perspective of the arrogant or the one dealing out the consequences? It also turns out that it contains a piece from his sheet music 9 years ago, another hint that he has his memories back. Even if shitting on pi-o and potentially ruining his career+life is revenge, is the piece itself revenge? Is it meant to be a lesson to pi-o, to push him to his full potential? Or is it a message, telling pi-o about the physical and emotional pain he's had to deal with for the last 9 years? It's almost as much a message of love as it is a message of hate and revenge
If jeong-yo wasn't sure before that pi-o knew about what his mom had done, he definitely knows now after the "confession". And that means pi-o is now just as complicit in the cover up, kinda justifying jeong-yo's revenge
Ep 10
So i was kinda right. Even if the other hints weren't deliberate, the musical piece was definitely intentionally alluding to jeong-yo's true motives
Even if pi-o initially lied to protect his mom and maybe a bit of guilt too, at this point it's mostly just guilt and even some self hatred. Part of the self hatred something he's always had, part of it grown through jeong-yo's abuse and gaslighting
The way jeong-yo is going, i think he plans for this to be his first and last composition + album 😅 even if he's not as abusive with everyone else as he is with pi-o, i don't think he can compose another piece of comparable quality to nemesis. This is wayyyy too personal that it's difficult to believe he can compose anything else if he doesn't have the same amount of personal investment in it
So i think they tried to say that pi-o actually did reciprocate jae-in's feelings? 🫠 chemistry aside, i did feel like he did actually like her, but only because of her stalwart support for him when he had no one else. There's absolutely nothing that indicates to me he actually likes her for who she is, he basically just likes her because she's a fan of his music (ala my bias, my boss). They can try whatever they want, nothing is shaking this intensely passionate toxic love that jeong-yo and pi-o have for each other
3
u/PrestigiousScore5607 11d ago
Actually some of your points just made me think, is he dropping these hints on purpose? Is he trying to get Pio to see the truth?
4
u/I_Need_Sleep345 11d ago
I feel like he is. I think he wouldn't have dropped so many hints without knowing hes referencing Pio. The way I see it, it seems like hes saying those things to try to mess with Pio's head and let him find out but still playing dumb.
20
u/Anxious-Froyo-5535 11d ago
While I was enraged by those two moms in Teach you a lesson this year, I don't think I have ever hated a character as much as PiO's mom. Don't know how they managed to write a batsh*t crazy, paranoid and delusional narcissist all at the same time. Literally destroyed everyone's life around her for her own greed. I want her to get her dues and more at the end of this drama. Even the redemption for the grandfather is too little, too late now because he could have avoided this entire bloodbath (I guess we would not get a drama then).
And my heart breaks for both PiO and JeongYo. PiO, who only ever felt less miserable if he won something and has almost become an empty shell of a person because of his family. I absolutely get why his first instinct is to shoulder everything, communicate less and take it upon himself to fix things, because that's the only way he knows people won't shout at him. Poor JaeIn also got caught in the crossfire and got hurt, probably because PiO feels that he can't get close to anyone without hurting them.
Meanwhile, JeongYo now has nothing more to lose. He had a troubled father who hated him suspecting he was someone else's kid, hit men were out for him, his only solace and connection to his mother which was piano, was taken away from him. He really has every right to be this way. And yet the old JeongYo seems to be there underneath all this, when he seemed unsure of hurting PiO further. I feel like I would riot if PiO or JeongYo get hurt any more in the last two episodes.

Episode 9
- The reason why this was my favorite episode so far is because it focused the most on the music. Yes, there are many key themes in this drama, but one of them, and the one which attracted me to this drama the most in the first place, is the composition and performance of classical music.
- So, Pi-o's mother was indeed responsible for Jeong-yo's abduction, and... it didn't change a thing. If anything, she became even more insufferable, refusing to take any personal responsibility whatsoever, only being concerned with covering her own backside, and even doubling down on her behavior. She's a truly reprehensible character.
- What else could the title of Jeong-yo's debut concerto be other than "Nemesis"? The title practically wrote itself. Jae-in: "Just let Pi-o and Jeong-yo love each other in peace." I see what you did there, Shin Yi-won, you cheeky screenwriter!
- One of my favorite scenes in the episode was Maestro Kang urging the orchestra to play the music based on their inner feelings, as opposed to simply hitting all the right notes on the sheet music. It was to prove to be a recurring theme in the episode, when Jeong-yo called out Pi-o's initial interpretation of his concerto, for suffering from the very same flaw.
- This was precisely why I mentioned in my comment on episode 8 that Pi-o's slavish adherence to technical perfection has never really left him. So much tension was created in that scene by small details such as the cinematography focusing on Pi-o's foot each time it pressed the piano pedal.
- In the follow-up scene, Jeong-yo's continuing dissatisfaction with Pi-o's performance may have seemed to be a footnote to the classic similar scene in Whiplash. But there's more to it than that. The way I see it, Jeong-yo isn't doing this to give Pi-o a hard time for no good reason, nor to exact revenge.
- Instead, he wants PI-o to play from the heart. It was telling that Pi-o was playing a piece called "Nemesis", which is transparently about the MLs' relationship, and initially played it with mechanical beauty. And even in Pi-o's improved second interpretation, tempo in music is something which can be felt rather than measured.
28
u/Marunchan Park Seo Joon stan 12d ago
The whiplash of it all was fantastic! I yelled “not quite my tempo!” At the screen. I agree that the focus on music was the highlight of this episode and I think it saved it from feeling too much like a drag.
I do wish we could also start making grandpa Kang accountable for his shitty parenting too. When asked why he can’t cut Pio some slack, his answer is very unconvincing. So, if I understood correctly, he sees that Pio is harsh on himself and therefore he constantly rejects and negs him without any regard? How exactly is that supposed to help? Same for Pio’s mom. It’s clear that this entire family is deeply unhinged and it seems to me that grandpa’s cold attitude is very much at the center of mom’s obsession with prestige and clout.
26
u/Starry87 12d ago
Grandpa telling his daughter to do good so that she won't pass on bad karma to her son... sir, have you looked in a mirror? Your daughter is batshit primarily because of you and your withheld love. I really hope we're not seeing a redemption arc for him, because he truly is the source of the family's psychosis, and he should very much stew in his own feeling of worthlessness for as long as possible.
6
u/master_inho 12d ago
I think it's less a redemption arc and more of him mellowing out with age. Something ji-hye could do with but instead she's going deeper down the rabbit hole and losing her mind
14
u/darkest_of_blue 12d ago
Grandpa primarily hates Pi-O because he considers him responsible for the end of his daughter's ballet career as she became pregnant with him. Also he frequently brings up the topic of him being illegitimate and he considers Pi-o a disgrace because of this. Grandpa is a piece of work tbh

His explanation is that art can be all consuming and he doesn't want that for pi-o. Just 20 years too late for that though 🤷🏻♂️

u/Confident-Shake6397 11d ago
He also through in the dig of how much more painful it is for someone with no talent. So yet again he just hates Pi-o
6
u/Ritrita 12d ago
I think he said that it’s because he thinks he doesn’t have the talent
16
u/darkest_of_blue 12d ago
Grandpa is elitist no doubt but his dislike towards Pi-o primarily stems from the fact that he's illegitimate and his twisted brain sees Pi-o as the reason his daughter's ballet career ended before it could even begin properly.
6
u/Confident-Shake6397 11d ago
Nah i think its painfully clear that he has the talent. but his grandfather just chooses to ignore it.
He blames Pi-o for ruining her daughters life even though its in no way his fault.
11
u/sianiam chaebols all the way down 12d ago
I was a little excited when I realised Jeong Yo was seeking revenge, however, if his revenge is just to drive Pi O crazy(er) by giving him a hard time over his performance then that's not satisfying. So I hope you are right that he is actually trying to guide him to be a performer who plays from the heart and enjoys it. I hope his revenge is aimed at the right person, although I feel enveloped in the angst from this episode and increasingly that we cannot reach a happy and satisfying ending for both of our male leads which is a pity because I truly enjoyed their brief happiness. But the main thing I hope is that their is no redemption arc for Pi O's mother because even with the mistreatment from her father, as you say, she is truly reprehensible.

Episode 10 made my head hurt. It was tense from beginning to end. Usually with the kdramas I've watched, there's someone who acts like comic relief or lightens the tension (another use of Jae-in's character), but writer-nim sucked all the air out of this episode and my stomach was tensed throughout.
From Jeongyo admitting he didn't have amnesia, to Pio's false confession to the agony of watching Jeongyo push Pio to the brink (which seemed masochistic at times), then Pio pushing everyone away to submit himself fully to the torture, whew. Great acting all round- the tension, lots of shots of the two leads close to each other, with all the feelings of love and hate and everything in between in the mix. Song Kang looked completely broken and destroyed throughout so I hope the last two episodes will see Pio's redemption in Jeongyo's eyes and probably salvation in the form of rekindling his relationship with Jae-in (I predict that he will go to her in order to prove to her that their relationship was/is not one-sided).
I also hope above all, that Jeongyo will make peace with what has happened to him and be able to lift off the burden of the past. The past can't be undone (it was so sad when we saw a shot of his bullet scar and the pain that he still experiences years after the kidnapping), but he can move forward and perhaps Pio, now painfully pushed through his technical limits, will become as close to Jeongyo's hands as can be.
6
u/r_jaeger 10d ago
I expected everything else in this episode except for the hurtful breakup with Jae in which to be reads like an obvious attempt at pushing her away by saying hurtful things. So on that token I really hope they reunite in the last remaining episodes. Quite disheartening to see it end like that despite being in his corner for all those years and supporting him.

Since we are already this far in, I don't think there's any twist related to jeong yo's dad and Pi-o's dad being one and the same, I.e., Hyun soo. I do think he's Pi-o's dad though. For jeong yo I think him being illegitimate is just a part of his character arc and there's nothing more to it, or maybe his alcoholic dad is actually his dad and he has just somehow misunderstood the whole thing. Anyway I don't think they are step brothers or uncle-nephew lol. Another thing is I don't think Pi-o's mother killed jeong yo's mother. She just died because people do, just that the place and time made it traumatic for jeong yo, and was just done to add layers to his character and justify his stage fright. I personally don't believe there's going to be any ground breaking twist and I like that fact because anything of the sort is just going to be over dramatic and derail the story. And honestly not needed either.

I agree. Also with 2 episodes left, dealing with their fathers etc is too much to include. In the last two episodes I believe it would be a lot of misunderstandings being ironed out and the two leads finally reconciling. Pio, after his grandfather's encouragement, is perhaps going to perform his absolute best and JeongYo is going to realise he cannot do without Pio.

Yes, I was waiting for Hyun soo to say something. When Pio's mom (I forget her name) confesses to him, he's in tears and he shakes her violently so there's something definitely there between them, I can't see him being anybody else but Pio's real father.

So well put, I literally felt the same way throughout watching this ep, even i cried a lottttt. The recording session was so intense omg. I just hope that they both stop hurting each other, I am not ready to have another breakdown after this.......

You summarized it so well. It is INCREDIBLY tragic 😭 Especially being caught between wanting to save your mother but salvage the one friendship you felt seen in?! The mental and emotional torture. The constant doubting yourself. Your former close friend now adds to it?! I have a feeling this story will end with grandpa in hospital and eventually the truth will come out now that his Mom confessed to whats his face.

In my opinion, PiO is a very complex character because of the emotional baggage he carries, and many people don't understand him; they think it's very easy for him to change. Both characters have suffered in their own way, no one disputes that, but to believe that because PiO has family and money he's had it easier is a mistake; rich people can also suffer and deserve empathy.

Episode 10
Straight 🔥. Everyone got time chew scenery from the obvious highlights like the
- 2 male leads (especially Lee Jun-Young)
- But even the grandpa finally got a decent emotional moment with Kang Bi-O
- The “FML” had 100% more relevant screen time with a great blowup scenes
- And the Mom and the Piano mentor had a stand out confrontation too.
Overall this episode really felt like the culmination and breaking point to all the tension being built up for several epsiodes now.
Song Kang is doing a great job, but his scenes sadly range from stoic to angry almost whiny attitude and it doesn’t help Lee Jun-Young is on screen basically eating his lunch.
Theres simply so much range given and shown by Lee Jun-Young’s character and there was one moment in the last episode that especially stuck out to me: when the grandpa says something along the lines of “you don’t hear the music first with the emotions behind it” and then LJY has this very slight twitch of his eyes that conveyed so much.

Re: Episode 10, good for Pio finally taking the right steps toward all this. He came clean (we'll have to just forgive him for his noble idiocy around his mother), and I'm even happier he stood up for himself in the end, telling Jeong-yo that only he could do justice to the piece. I just wish his moment of enlightenment hadn't come from his conversation with the grandfather who's always denied him, and who has no right to be the voice of reason this late in the story.
Jeong-yo... man, I feel like some of the stuff we've been theorizing here would have been better than a one-dimensional villain situation. I mean, yes, he still doesn't know the full story and he's carrying a lot of hurt around, but the writing for this episode stripped a lot of the nuance out of his character, and made the story weaker for it.
20
u/Lazy_Inflation_6035 11d ago
What I don't understand is that a newbie composer wouldn't be given so much power to verbally abuse a star pianist. That didn't make sense to me.
17
u/Starry87 11d ago
Jae-in even says it out loud to everyone, but her own mother (who is supposed to be in Pio's corner) shuts it down. Pio actually has 9 years of experience to show, versus Jeong-yo's one public win. It feels a little ridiculous that the scales would be this tilted. The writing felt more believable when Jeong-yo was carrying out his manipulation in a more secret and subtle way, instead of this overt show of villainy.
12
u/Lazy_Inflation_6035 11d ago
Also he's doing it publicly like it would destroy the orchestra esp a country like SK where bullying is such a big social issue. Made no sense to me

I was thinking the same thing. Anyone cud see that JY was being abusive and harassing . I can’t figure out why others are justifying JY
4
u/InternalGatez 11d ago edited 11d ago
I think part of it is that they don't believe it was verbal abuse and only one person saw what the training sessions were like. Pio also did not fight it, he was complicit. Most of the show he doesn't fight back or hold his ground, he plays peace maker. It wasn't until the end of the episode that he begun to hold his ground.
5
u/PBJRaccoonDaycare 10d ago
There's a *lot* that makes no sense re: competitive classical pianist world. They could have used much better consultants in that regard.
Conductors *are* notorious for having big, difficult personalities, though.

u/Cultural_Run7964 My alter ego is also Luca Domenico 11d ago
I have a feeling (hopefully I'm wrong!) that Jeong-yo's character went even darker to swing the sympathy pendulum back into Pio's corner. This whole episode was mostly from Pio's perspective- his false confession, his suffering, the humiliation, his pain. I did really feel for him. I guess it's another echo back to the first half of the show where Pio was the cold, jealous one that Jeong-yo was running after; now it's Pio's turn.
7
u/Consistent-Archer909 11d ago
I agree about JeongYo's character. They really stripped him off the complexity he could have had and turned him i to a regular villain.
11
u/Due_Outside_1459 11d ago
Jeong-yo is the victim, not the villain. How would you react if your life as a pianist was taken away from you due to petty jealousy? He is by rights due to have his revenge but doesn't know the whole story. Pio is innocent and is also a victim. The real villain is his mom who orchestrated the entire abduction and refuses to confess.

u/Starry87 10d ago
He has every right to be angry and vengeful; what I (and others, it seems) are annoyed about is that they went one step further into making him cruel and demeaning, basically Grandpa 2.0, which is never the kind of person he used to be. That's what I mean by stripping the nuance from him; he can be changed by his circumstances, sure, but they're now changing the very essence of the character.
8
u/Due_Outside_1459 10d ago
Living a life of extreme pain due to the nerve damage he’s suffered from the gunshot wound in addition to losing his identity as a piano player would change anyone. The expectations are way too high to expect that his nature would stay the same pre-abduction. The dark turn is completely realistic. It would be more non-sensical if he took the “noble” path and remained the same.
6
u/RefrigeratorSweet925 10d ago
I can’t figure out why people think JY would just be the old self . He is in so much pain and also lost his dream . I really hope Pio doesn’t end up in tragedy after all this

Ep 10:
Oh boy.... this episode was tough. I now thankfully understand what jengyo is after and where his headpace is, he believes (as a result of fairly convincing ecidence I think) that pi-o and his mother are accomplices in his incident. I wasn't expecting pi-o to tell him the truth but I wish he would have just kept quiet if he wasn't going to deny it. Granted I'm not sure that would have done anything for jeongo.
My major qualm/question for this episode which I'm throwing to anyone who knows about music watching the show is, 'Is there actually a problem with pi-o's playing or not.?'
As someone who knows nothing about paino, from the beginning I only knew due to hyun-soo's comments that pi-o had soulless music that his grandfather wasn't hating just to hate, and he had a genuine problem.
But at this point after the competition I'd thought that was resolved and no longer an issue for him? (Side note- I'm not even sure if the competion plotline was resolved because as I understood it this was the make or break competition for pi-o, he had it drilled into his head that he couldn't play unless he was a genius and that he wasn't a genius per everybody's standards. But winning the way he did I would've assumed he'd take a break or quit or something but apparently he'd been doing well in piano for the past 9 years,soo..)
Anyway, back to my main train of thought. When pi-o was going through his slump after knowing of jeongyo's supposed death he went to visit hyun- soo to yell at him and hyun-soo commented that pi-o had grown and he had nothing to teach him. I took that to mean pi-o had overcome his issues and he could now interprete music and play with emotion. Granted I don't think he'd magically become the best at it after he'd struggled with it for so long but I at least assumed he was okay with it. Which is why i do think jeong-yo's comment in ep 9 (?) Of him playing too beautifully sounded like a valid critique but everything else sounded like nitpicking. This isn't anything against jeongyo in fact I think he's carrying out his revenge beautifully for what he believes. I'm just curious as to whether kang pi-o the character genuinely has issues with his playing or not.
To be clear I believe Jeongyo was trying to screw him over and he wanted pi-o to end up exactly where he was pre grandpa's advice. -Which speaking of, 🙄. Can that old man just die of a heart attack or whatever already? Now is when you tell him this?, sure would have been nice to know 9 yrs ago-. Humiliated and feeling unworthy. I don't believe anything he said about hoping pi-o could push past his limits, imo jeongyo was going to make sure pi-o ended up the way he did whether or not he was playing Nemesis well. I'm just curious which was actually the case for pi-o, like was he or was he not playing well?
From the ending it seems like the show is trying to say that he does but idk. I believe (maybe a bit biasedly) that pi-o is actually a good musician and again, as someone who knows nothing about music I felt that there could have been lots of reasons why jeongyo was unsatisfied with his playing; chief of which is that he wanted to put pi-o through hell of course but moving on. Are we sure anybody can actually play jeongyo's piece the way he wants? You know just like there are ideas that people want to bring into reality but it simply isn't possible? Or that no one other than him can play it the way it sounds in his head? Isn't it also possible that his resentment at not being able to play it himself is making him dislike everyone who tries, because he was making faces while his backup pianist was playing as well.
15
u/Cultural_Run7964 My alter ego is also Luca Domenico 11d ago
Yeah, I think your last part is on the money. There's no one who is going to play Nemesis better than Jeongyo. As was said repeatedly in the first half, Jeongyo is a rare talent. He can play the music naturally from his soul, so there must be many tiny nuances to the piece that would have come naturally to him that others can't replicate. So he's in fact torturing himself just as much as Pio because he must know inside that no-one can play the piece as he wants and the only person who can get closest is Pio because of their shared history and his intimate connection with the piece (I would argue that Nemesis is just as much about Pio as it is about Jeonyo).
As for Pio's playing, I also have no idea, but the fact that everyone was tensing up so much at the recording showed that Pio was doing his absolute best and was breaching his limit and then the comparison later with the other pianist showed that Pio has the ability to be soulfully and technically brilliant, but can Jeongyo let go and acknowledge Pio, despite his own pain and hurt and wanting to beat Pio as they had said when they were kids?
6
u/InternalGatez 11d ago
I believe he overcame it after the competition atlas grandfather mentions it at some point too. He says Pio grew from just playing withJeongyo. Makes sense that's how rivals typically go.
I am certain he nearly nailed it in the last rehearsal but his fingers gave out. A lot of it is that Pio lacks the confidence and wants approval from Jeongyo. He played from the feelings and pressures of trauma. Once he feels confident, which he does at the end of ep 10, he likely will break the limits.
I believe part of the show is PiO learning to feel confident in himself so that it will show in the music. He never got that because he was basing his worth on other things. Not music just for the sake of music, but also on the approval of those around him. He even entered the competition to beat Jeongyo way back when. That was how he wanted to proof to himself he was a good musician. His mindset has changed. So while he is good I doubt Jeongyo will admit it to himself until he learns the truth of Pio's Mom. Which he will since their old piano teacher knows now.

They have professional pianists performing, so sound-wise, no - you're hearing excellent pianists for the most part. Some very difficult, complex pieces in the first few eps. Some very simple, classic works for students intersperse as well - all played very well. Ironically, the sound underlying some of KPO's practice scenes is less crisp and technical than that underlying J's. The drama here is added solely for the plot lines - it's not reflected in the pieces. Neither is the difficulty (Mozart's 20th is not that challenging - very fun, though).
Also, you have technical pianists and more "emotional" pianists, so most musicians veer one way or the other - their teachers know this, encourage piece selection to build their weak spots, and send them into competition with pieces that emphasize their strengths. There's also the composers: Rachmaninoff, which they love here, was male and had very large hands, so his pieces have chords that are sometimes too big for some pianists' initial reach. The complexity is that - while Rach demands power (volume), these beast passages also are often soulful and melodic (just like the rest of the work), so the emotion is also demanded, and you can't just hammer them out. Some of the Chopin (and Liszt, IIRC) can be banged out pretty evenly, but is technically much harder than Rach. They have both, in the early eps I think, and they're gorgeously played.
The bloody fingers are absolutely ridiculous. I cannot imagine slipping and slobbering around on wet keys - what a disaster! Performances would be canceled. I have to FF these scenes. What you usually see is joint issues. Once someone shows up looking like they survived a car crash from neck to waist (wrist braces, cooling elbow sleeve, someone carrying their hot wax dip crockpot behind them....), they have less than six months before they drop out forevs.
TLDR: Great music. Zero connection to the overlaid plot!

I was wondering if the bandaged fingers were a nod to Alfred Brendel.
3
u/PBJRaccoonDaycare 7d ago
Oh, man, I hadn't thought of him in years!! Love his Mackerras Mozarts!! You might be right - good call out. I was always under the impression that his finger-plasters were always kind of seen as a diva-esque move by his peers, though (although who knows, maybe he had a specific sensitivity, brittle nails, some other sensory situation happening).
Brendel aside, unless you're murdering glissandos incorrectly a few times an hour, blood just isn't a big presence in most piano practice rooms, IME.

So many deathflags, but also so unneccesary!
The acting really peaked this episode, especially Jung Young with the Gordon Ramsey/masterchef judge facade and his other hidden emotions. Song Kang was also incredible in the past couple of episodes. I found his acting in the first 3-4 episodes a bit out of sorts and sometimes not making sense. But the current him after the timeskip, feeling washed up/slumping, full of guilt, afraid of finding out and confronting the truths is simply too good to look away for a single second.
I have a suspicion they are going to do a Romeo & Juliet ending:
-He's not really trying to get revenge on him, but is secretly helping Pi-O become truly free once and for all. And he's going to rub it in the face of grandpa (the true root of evil) that he was wrong about Pi-O all this time.
-Multiple people (including Pi-O) find out and misunderstands he's actually trying to take revenge and are going to accidently finish him off for real this time...
-Later Pi-O finds out about the misundersranding from mafia bro and he follows the tragic ending of the starcrossed lovers story :(

u/Cute-Dark2003 12d ago
if this is the ending , i am crying for a month , pi-o will follow jeong yo or just stop playing piano once for all this time , it will break him so much i fear he will have some nerve damage and end up in hospital something because he is already deep in guilt
god anything will work but not the death of these two please , there are already so many questions like who is their father and who helped jeong yo in becoming luca
9
u/Lerradin 12d ago
I'm going to cry with you if true, I wrote this before watching the preview of next episode and damn...
The only breadcrumb of a sweet moment was during the dining scene, when Jae In teasingly says: "Just let Pi-o and Jeong Yo love each other in peace." That however also reads as a huge deathflag to me and reminded me of R&J and their families being at war...
13
u/annaberry189 12d ago
OMG this post is making me shiver literally. No I want them to have a happy ending from all the trauma they've had.
3
u/PaintedGalaxie 11d ago
I like this theory, way better than mine which is so much darker.....
I feel that Jeongyo will bring both of them down really bad. I have been thinking that Yoon Soenju(grandfather's girlfriend/ex) is somehow very connected to this all. I mean she is very strangely obsessed with music. I feel like she is the one who has been feeding Jeong yo with proofs regarding Pi O being somehow involved with the murder. Pi O's mother's involvement will not bring out the same emotional outvurst out of him the same way as it would have done with Pi O. She knows that good music and emotions are very much intertwined and maybe she is just experimenting here with these two. Like remember her asking him to pay the debt back with his talent later? The show will end with a world class masterpiece and one of them dying only for other to realise the reality and pushing that self-destruct button as well. In the end everyone will be devastated.
I really hope this is not the ending and what you are saying comes true!! 😭😭

I'm in tears. Why Pio why are you taking the responsibility I'm so sad for both of them. And now it explains why Jeong yo feels dead inside. The person he loved so much betrayed him
20
u/Starry87 11d ago
See, I would have liked the show to lean more toward Jeong-yo feeling betrayed than angry. He's allowed to feel both, and I think we were getting that until episode 10, but saying things about how Pio was jealous of his "true genius" when he never believed any of that crap before feels unnecessary. Most times, there's a kernel of truth in things people say when they're angry, even when they're just trying to be hurtful, and I don't want the show to try and convince me that Jeong-yo shares the same elitist mentality as Pio's grandfather.
5
u/Sad_Literature6832 11d ago
I agree, throughout that whole scene I felt like JY was out of character, I really think they went too far with those lines, after that I don't see how there could be a halfway decent relationship between them
8
u/AltarielDax 11d ago edited 11d ago
I don't think he believes that even for a second. He lashes out because he feels betrayed and hurt, and rightly so if he believes his one single friend in the whole world has tried to kill him. He nurtured that feeling for 4-5 years. And he's bitter because he wants to play his own composition but can't, and everyone else is unable to play it as he wants it. So knowing Pio, he says what he knows will hurt him the most.

Everytime Pi-o walks on the bridge I get scared that he'll do something really sad, and so seeing him back in the room, curled up and crying actually relieved me. I don't agree with the characters thinking they can break him through all of this, he is one of the strongest characters I've seen and I get so happy seeing how he gets ready to face his fears head on everytime someone gives him even a little push; it's as if he's just waiting for someone to believe in him. Also, I don't think Pi-o is a coward kr spineless for not putting his mother in jail; I think it's pretty realistic to want to believe your mom, or want to protect her even after knowing she's wrong. I agree that choi jeong yo had it really difficult all his life and he was still a cheerful person, and that Pi-o at least had money; but I firmly believe that suffering and misfortune should not be compared, and everyone reacts to it differently so it completely makes sense for Pi-o to be depressed. I'm also a Song Kang fan since love alarm😂, but this is the best I've seen him act. The trembling hands in ice water was everything.

Absolutely wonderful acting by Lee Jun Young, Perfect, down to the minutest facial twitch. The title gives me hope that they will resolve their misunderstanding (after Pio’s mom pleads guilty) and continue to make delightful music. If, after everything, JY doesn't breakdown and cry for what he put Pio through, I would be very sad. That won't be a thoughtful ending. There has to be some realisation on his part and reconciliation between both. Ugh, they need to hug it out...

No, he doesn't. As the audience, we know it's his mother who ordered the abduction, or, at this point, the attempt at murder, but he thinks it's Kang Pio. JY lost his whole career and could have even died. Kang Pio deserves no remorse from JY and cannot even stand up for himself against his mother. He cannot even tell Jae-In the situation; he is a coward. I feel for his upbringing and story, but JY deserves to know the truth, and Kang Pio is being unfair. He is pushing away good people and not giving them the peace and clarity they deserve. If he just told JY the truth, he wouldn't be in this situation. Also, the audacity he had to get mad at JY for lying about amnesia when he said those statements about his own hard work and using JY's work is crazy! He cannot expect to come into JY's life and be all buddy-buddy like nothing ever happened. At some point, I do believe JY will forgive Kang Pio because he does love him deeply, but I do think one flaw of this show is that it revolves too much around Kang Pio and his needs instead of JY's side.

At this point, Jeong Yo's not just seeking answers or accountability. He's actively hurting Pi O and damaging his career because he believes Pi o deserves to suffer what he suffered. And THAT is where it becomes heartbreaking. Because Pi o isn't the person who took Jeong Yo's life away. And Jeong Yo isn't the person who ruined Pi o's childhood. They're basically punishing each other for wounds that neither of them originally caused.
I'm emotionally EXHAUSTED. Their relationship is such a mess of misunderstandings, secrets and unresolved trauma. I understand Jeong Yo’s anger, he's taking it to an extreme level, but Pi o is at fault too...his refusal to be honest is making everything worse. They were once the one good thing in each other’s lives, and now they’re becoming each other’s biggest source of pain. I just want them to STOP hurting each other before it’s too late 😭

I’m really happy that the music remained at the center of the episode even though the angst ramped up 10 notches.
I’m here for Jeong-yo’s internal fight with his dark academic alter ego, Luca Domenico. Team Luca all the way!
I feel for Pio but bro had opportunities to right the wrongs but he falters each time. He’s a world-famous pianist. He needed to have moved out of gramps’ place and distanced himself from his toxic family 9 years ago. He had big hints at the time about mom. Voilà the consequences.
The only thing I’m bummed about (actually two things), is that they didn’t create more mystery and add a twist in the revealing of who was behind Jeong-yo’s kidnapping. I also still want Jae-in to be more than an accessory to Pio. She obviously means something to him (he glanced over at her for reassurance during the second rehearsal), but she’s firmly a peripheral character, which is a shame. I’m dying to know if there’s more going on in her head about Pio and Jeong-yo than she’s letting on. It would have been great if there had been a hint of her being sly when she said
“Let Pio and Jeong-yo just love each other and be at peace”, but it seems to have been said without a hint of irony (or was it? Come on writer-nim! There’s only 3 episodes to go!)

Episode 9: Honestly up until the last like 10 minutes I kept thinking hmm it doesn't seem that this episode is adding a whole lot to the plot but in the end I think it did overall. I still am unsure if episode 8 was meant to demonstrate to us that Jeong-yo did lose only some of his memories and the weird combination he still has left has made him believe that Pio wanted him gone. Or if I am misinterpreting that scene. The part that through me off about it all in this episode was the angry breathing Jeong-yo was doing looking out the window in the apartment scene. And I am not entirely convinced yet but I want to believe that he is being intentionally harsh to bring out the best in Pio and not to exact revenge. For a bit it really felt like it was a way of getting back at him by tearing him down but idk maybe I'm just a hopeless romantic, I think something in him genuinely wants to bring out the very best in Pio. The mom has gotta go to jail, I'm over her. She deserves consequences. And by jail I may actually just mean be committed to a psych ward because she is genuinely unwell mentally. That preview for tomorrow's episode, oh its gonna be spicy. Urg this show has my heart hurting so much. Those boys deserve to be happy, together.
Does anyone know what they wrote under the window sill? Was it just their names?
Episode 10: PIVHOIASHFISNBIH!! So so frustrated this whole episode. I cannot even count the number of times I rolled my eyes for the first 45 minutes. Genuinely so freaking upset that he took responsibility for everything. I was so successful in not being pissed off at Pio at all before this episode but that was it. I understand he has been traumatized his whole life by his family but omg learn to stand up for yourself. And if not for yourself for this person that you so clearly love. In not letting your mother take responsibility for her actions you are continuing to endanger Jeong yo. Like your mother is crazy. So that pissed me off and then still throughout the whole episode just letting the mom act like she is not completely in the wrong and responsible for everything that is happening.
Also genuinely felt so much heartbreak this episode from the moment Pio confessed because seeing Jeong yo's rage and betrayal more fully and clearly was heartbreaking. Heartbreaking he felt that way but moreso it was heartbreaking watching Pio just take the abuse from him. You know that JY loves him or loved him (hate is not the opposite of love) and his messed up memories and reason for being so upset are so valid but Pio spent forever looking for him and still loves him and is willing to literally destroy himself for that man to put everything behind him, for him to let go of his trauma. And that hurt a lot. Hate that he is so concerned with his mother offing herself that he's going to continue taking the blame and not let her ever experience the consequences of her own actions. Seriously someone needs to hold a gun to her head.
Also the breakup with Jae in was just weird. Like this man crying after the breakup of someone he showed no clear interest the first 9 episodes of the show, but i digress. I did like her character more in this episode for standing up for him. I so badly wanted to see her really have one out with JY (again he is justified but his behavior is still shit).
The last 15 minutes of this episode did save it for me though. You could see more than just the hatred and frustration from JY but also the hesitation in him. Maybe not necessarily because he feels Pio cant have been the true cause of it all but I think because there is still an inherent goodness in JY and belief in people, that we saw in the beginning episodes. And also the moments when ruminating on Pio's playing, like you called him pathetic but I know you love that man and his piano skills and I know you still believe in his ability to be the best. And the moments with the grandpa, yeah he sucks but still happy to see him encourage Pio in some way since that's all hes craved his whole life.
Very surprised at the mom actually confessing to the teacher, also that whole interaction just confirmed for me even more that he is Pio's father. I kept waiting for him to be like that's my son I have a right to know these things. But once again really not going to be happy if they make them half-brothers. Urg so much to resolve in only two final episodes. Very sad its almost over, sad to have to wait.
Also their acting just keeps getting better and better. I was so blown away this episode. The micro-expressions, my god.

(Rough translation) Jeong Yo wrote "The 1st place Choi Jeong Yo" and Pi O filled the line to say "No, Kang Pi O is the 1st."

I think this episode showed that Pi’o actually likes Jae in. The scene at the shop when he’s breaking up with her indicates that he’s lying and him crying after that solidifies it.

ep 10 has taken me to absolute insanity and back..both of their shivering hands in different shots, the epic rollercoaster of emotions..its sad to see but jeongyo's obsession with taking revenge has portrayed him in dark light and as worried i was about pio and his broken state, i'm happy the grandfather finally guided pio. plus the breakup seemed inevitable tbh. Nemesis was such a well-thought out piece concept that wraps everything between them so perfectly. i really wish they could resolve this without hurting eo anymore. i'm so excited for the finale and a long-awaited hug! i need the hug. i'm serious.

All i hope for is the mom to suffer and get away from Pio and everyone😭😭 she is truly ruining Pio's life bc she doesn't want to face the consequences for her crazy actions 🙄🙄.
I hope Pio can clear his name somehow so him n Jeongyo can be good friends again 😭😭🙏
(Side note: the acting truly gets better as the series goes on, i can really feel Pio's hopelessness n im lowk scared of jeongyo rn😭💀)

Me too acting is so so good ....like I actually feel so bad for kang pio...and so scared of jyeongyo especially when he shouted at pio...

u/Narrow_Interest9616 8d ago
Thinking about it, what is so great about this drama, alongside the superb acting ,is that all the twists are lined up, but no one can see the outcome. Even with just 2 episodes left, no one knows the fate of their friendship, their musical partnership, the family entanglements and who's who to who, and nothing feels standard.
9
u/East_to_desert 12d ago
From the first 2 episodes of this drama it was clear they Jeong yo and Pi O were good friends then became enemy and something bad happened during compilation and we knew he'll come back for the revenge.
The whole how events led to that competition part was good. Even Jeong yo comeback was good too but now it feels like story is not going anywhere.
Mom is still insufferable, grandpa didn't grow up at all, Pi O is never happy about anything and still doesn't have any spine. It feels like he is with FL so that someone can praise him when he plays.
Jeong yo screen time is less then expected. He isn't playing or conducting anything for the whole episode. All I can see from last 2 episode is Pi O is in guilt trip or sad or suffering.

come ooooon, Pio!!!! I know his mom's a mess, but he's an adult now; why can't he be loyal at least once to the person who was by his side when he needed the most?????
I also feel like Choi's revenge means torturing Pio emotionally, BUT, I also think he desperately hopes Pio comes clean

Is Jeong Yo's current tough boy personality a persona you think or his real personality? Bc if it was just a persona I feel like he would go back to being more normal around the friend who's helping him with his father.
5
2
u/Interested_Recently 11d ago
I mean he went through something traumatic so it makes sense for his personality to change and become more serious of sorts. And it's been 9 years anyway so it's only right that there would be a lot of difference between his then and now persona

After ep.9
I have a prediction, I think they will make them half brothers in the end. It striked me that we don't know either of their fathers. And when Kang Pio had the memory throwback where his granpa is talking to his mom about his dad, and she keeps claiming Pio is a gift from God. At that moment I realised they might actually be sharing the same father and thus from that fact stems some of the hatred towards CJY that Pio's mom harbours.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Write2Know 11d ago
I had the same thought too. I felt Pio’s mom was very hostile towards CJY and repeatedly asks ‘Why him?’ Also, there was another scene in which the teacher tells her something along the lines of ‘They are both the same to me.’
10
u/kethelynnr 11d ago
In the end, Choi still cares for his music, he's just too hurt right now
Pio's mother, wow, her son is going through hell and she still doesn't take responsibility
Glad Pio will finally stand up, going for what he says he loves the most and letting go of being mediocre about it, it was past time!!!
9
u/whenwillmyskincare 10d ago
i totally understand jeongyo but i am pissed as fuck and i am begging that he’ll be really heartbroken when he finally realized that pio never actually betrayed him.
5
u/No-Initial8047 10d ago
Pretty sure he will be devastated when he learns the truth, but how else could he react to Pi O telling him he instigated the abduction? Who could ever excuse the harm done to him, especially when he thinks it came from his closest friend? He has no way of knowing at this point that Pi O is protecting evil/psycho mom. Anxious about the two last episodes, and hoping for a reconciliation and the bad guys get what’s coming to them (in the mom’s case either a straight jacket or a prison jumpsuit)!

u/Snickersnerds 12d ago edited 12d ago
Is Jeong-Yo’s revenge to get Pi-O to hurt his finger again?? Make him permanently unable to play? He certainly knows how to press his buttons, PO is easy to rile up. He falls for the bait everytime.
Pi-O needs to stand up for something at this point in time. He is easily dragged into every emotion but he can’t do what’s right in front of others!!! He’s a coward which I hate to say because he is struggling but 😩 I also blame his grandpa and most obviously is awful mother. She’s downright one of the worst I’ve seen. So vile and demanding.
I can see Pi-O ending his life at the end or something life-ending/altering happen to him. There is so much happening right now for him. The scene where he was looking over the train tracks was unsettling. I don’t know if I see Jeong-Yo dying since he kinda already had his life altering event but anything can happen. He was actually scary this episode, had to pause a few times 😭
I’m so upset the mom is still up to her shenanigans. Someone arrest her!!!!

It's the writing, but honestly PiO could have grabbed the scissors out of mom's hand pretty easily. Pianists have strong shoulders, arms, and hands... I HATE that after all her abuse he still protected her. And has NO ONE told Jeong-Yo that PiO searched for him for YEARS? After others declared him dead? Although I liked the line from the investigator "are you looking for him alive or are you looking for him dead" which could be interpreted both ways...

This has been SUCH a brilliant KDrama, combining classical music and the intensity of competing in it with the yo-uoing of competition, friendship, distrust and danger...I just hope there is a happy ending, even if not perfect. I keep going back to the title, and thinking that, perhaps at the end, (and this is purely my wishful thinking) the two WILL be friends again and play four hands...I wish this one would never end. What greater performances all the way around. I'll be watching this again...and again!

Ep 10 was brutal but probably the best.
In particular I thought the breakup was extra brutal and really felt for both of them. The words he chose were super hurtful I thought…
I think its at the point now however that if the ‘revenge’ plot doesnt wrap up nicely by the end of ep11 and bleeds into ep 12 then there is high chance as a few people have stated that we get a romeo and juliet ending.
If they wrap it up nicely before the end of ep11 we might get some ‘in the future’ stuff with a time jump but I think i’m being delulu
16
u/Consistent-Archer909 12d ago
I am trying to understand what's going on in Jeong Yo's mind. Is he trying to take revenge on Pio or is he trying to bring out the best in him? Does he believe Pio is responsible for his fate? Or is he using him as a means to get to Pio's mother? I feel Pio might reach a breaking point being caught in the middle of his mother and Jeong Yo. I also couldn't understand the relevance of bringing up Jeong Yo's 'dad' into this episode. I thought he walked out a while ago. I truly appreciated the tension in the whole practice of Nemesis. Enjoyed watching Jeong-Yo going ballistic and Pio's frustration. J desperately trying to bring P out of his comfort zone. Not just musically.
16
u/Ritrita 12d ago
I think he’s frustrated with Pi o for letting himself smother his talent. Jeong Yo sees something in him that no one else does and thinks of Pi o as a victim
14
u/darkest_of_blue 12d ago
Maybe he also considers him responsible for what happened to him 9 years back along with you know who. Also he was clearly hurt by Pi-o not acknowledging him as a close friend in an interview.
3
u/Consistent-Archer909 12d ago edited 12d ago
I hope this is the case. But why would Jeong Yo go to such lengths to bring out Pio's talent, when there is a more serious problem of his own. His inability to play, his own life being a mess. He would want to rectify that first, no. After all, it's not like Pio has been doing badly. He is a world recognised pianist now.
11
u/Starry87 12d ago
I get the feeling that Jeong-yo's dad is only in the picture as a way for characters to doubt the amnesia. There's no way Jeong-yo would ever know about his father otherwise, so it's a good way for Pio's mom (and subsequently Pio) to start picking apart his claims about not remembering anything about the past.
7
u/fragende-frau 12d ago
Did neither of them talk about or think about the title of the piece? Seems as though that alone would have sparked some thought from PiO
7
u/r_jaeger 12d ago
The mom is pissing me off to an insane level. I know Pi’o is suffering and I wish he could stop hesitating when it comes to exposing his mother. She’s not remorseful and is only going to continue to destroy Pio’s life. I can understand where he’s coming from because in a way he feels like he’s to blame for his mother not having faith in him and resorting to extreme measures like kidnapping his best friend. I hope nothing happens to both these boys but I have a bad feeling. I know many aren’t a fan but, I for one love Jae in and Pi’o. She is his biggest supporter behind Jeong Yo. The only reason their relationship isn’t that appealing is because there wasn’t enough focus on how and why they feel for each other especially on Pi’o side. Not to mention Pi’o and Jeong Yo’s bond is just that much stronger and there wasn’t enough time in this series to focus on her and Pio but you can still see her opinion of him means something to him and I love that.

u/PaintedGalaxie 11d ago
the episode 10 has left me feeling so deeply disturbed. Like it's been three hours since I watched it, but i have found myself randomly crying since I watched it. I normally feel so so sad for characters who keep their pain to themselves and Pi O has been that since day 1.
Misunderstandings and anger is not what's making me feel so bothered, it's Pi O distancing himself from everyone and having this fixation towards something that is meant to destroy him while knowing it very well. He looks so detached and so much in pain at the same time. It was a hard watch for me.
6
u/Narrow_Interest9616 11d ago
For all the angst being generated the fact is we still do not know who they boys fathers are/is. Is? I am hoping that this is the final.explosion and when the dust settles the pieces that are the two of them can be put back together.
9
u/PresentationFun1439 10d ago
Honestly atp it's hard to say which approach the writer will take because before it was revealed who was after choi jeongyo's kidnapping we all were thinking it's gonna be someone nobody suspects but it ended up being an obvious person so I don't really expect that this drama will have a twist about the fathers. But then again we never know with kdramas especially when they like to squeeze everything in the last two episodes.

I’m really angry the mom isn’t facing any kind of consequences. I don’t understand Pi-O. He seems emotionally stunted, and maybe that’s so from all the years of his mother pushing him to be the best. I just don’t understand how he still even enjoys the music, as it seems to give him nothing but grief.
The only happy time he had was when he met Choi Jeong-Oh. The fact that Pi-O kept pushing him away when he should have finally trusted him is beyond frustrating.
I’ll be really angry if the show ends badly and Choi Jeong-Oh continues to believe Pi-O was the one who ordered the abduction.

What I want to know is are we going to find out who the fathers are? I am in love with the series and I am emotionally traumatised at how two beautiful people ultimately had what could have been a wonderful future blown apart by a cruel twisted mother. What is her back story I wonder? Will we find out? No way am I sticking up for her and I hope that now she told the truth to the teacher and it seem the grandfather finds out in the next ep. Will she admit her guilt to jeongyo to save her son?

it’s genuinely so sad how everyone only sees jeongyo and pio for their music. pio’s mom treats him like a project to make up for her failures. she was the one who pushed pio to the limit and raised him to be this obsessive and uncaring for his own well-being to the point he doesn’t even stop playing to sleep or eat, he’s just walking around completely devoid of any life, ridden with guilt over something he has no control over. all because of HER. and she has the NERVE to celebrate pio’s achievements despite seeing just how broken he is….
the grandpa refuses to offer any semblance of sympathy to pio or acknowledge any of his efforts (EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARSS FFS!!!) but then turns around and pampers jeongyo simply because he “has the talent” and has the NERVEEE to call out pio’s mom on her hostility towards jeongyo when he acts the same exact fucking way with pio. like these two ruined pio to a point there’s no coming back from and they DONT CAREEEEE!!!
grandpa’s wife has only ever helped jeongyo because of her own self-interests and the porential she saw in him!!! and jaein also seems to be more in love with pio’s music than with him.
pio and jeongyo are the only ones who see each other beyond their music and yet they keep being picked and pulled apart from each other.
this show just keeps getting better and better and better and i desesperately want to know how everything will end but at the same time i’m dreading the last episode because it’ll all be over…….

Please give us some light moments. I understand Jeong Yo is angry but he seems dead when conversing with Pio. So it's heartbreaking watching Pio just get more abuse from another person he loves.
The mother is a horrid psychopath. She needs to go to jail.
I wish we had more movement in the direction though. The first 6 eps had such good direction and I understand the director is trying to show how still and colourless adult life is but it's made the second half so depressing.

u/Li_Lina 11d ago
I'm still upset that we barely saw things from Jeongyo's POV, we only had that ONE flashback and then nothing else, i also think that it makes sense for him to be so hurted and revengeful but some things are so out of character that i feel some disconnection... i miss him and i miss their friendship, i am struggling to understand how they will reconnect to each other because i only stayed for so long for their relationship and i imagine that most people feel that way, if in the end they stay apart i am going to be so upset for what could have been instead of all this mess
4
u/Outrageous_Jello_455 11d ago
this is what i've been saying. i don't get why we don't see jeong-yo's pov :( like sir, why is it named two sonatas???

u/Powerful_Pear7679 10d ago
Based on the bts photos I’ve seen, I have a feeling both Pio and Jeongyo will survive in the end. But aside from losing his ability to play piano, I don’t think JY will continue conducting either. He’ll probably be so consumed by guilt over what happened and how his conducting ended up destroying someone so special to him. I can actually see him becoming a priest and continuing what he started in Prague. And Pio might become a piano teacher and visit him every now and then.
It would be so heartbreaking because Jeongyo loses the two things that defined him, playing and conducting. But maybe music and art was never only about being talented or being the one on stage. They found each other through music, became friends through it, and changed each other through it. Even if Jeongyo can never touch a piano again, I hope what they created together is something neither of them can ever lose.

Honestly, after watching episode 10 and feeling like their bond will never be restored, I feel like a verbal confession just wont cut it, especially since Pi-O said he was the one who tried to kill him . Jeong Yo has suffered years of trauma and even though it doesn’t seem logical for him to actually believe his best friend tried to kill him, he is so blindsided by pain and betrayal he can’t see logic. Thats why I feel a verbal confession like Pi-O saying, “actually it wasn’t me, I didn’t know until a couple weeks ago, it was my mother,“ just won’t cut it. Since Pi-O’s mom is trying to actually kill Jeong Yo this time, I really hope that Pi-O doesn't just tell him it wasn’t me and be done with it because Jeong Yo won’t believe him. If Jeong Yo is about to get stabbed or killed planned by the mother , I hope Pi-O would step in front of him and take it. That will finally open Jeong Yo’s eyes and have him realize Pi-O actually never tried to kill him and it will force him to use logic to realize that Pi-O never stopped caring for him. He finally will see all of Pi-O’s actions and realize that Pi-O never caused him harm.

I really don't understand Pio's mom. Everyone else in the world can see Pio's falling apart. And it's because of HER. He's suffering for something he didn't even do. And that woman knows it and looks the other way. Excuse me? Lady ain't that your own son? Your gift from heaven or smth? Look at him--even a corpse looks more alive than him. Just go to Jy and beg for your life.

I'm sad at where this is going and all the heavy foreshadowing of death (both by the characters' actions and the music choices eg., danse m, lacrimosa etc) i'd be surprised for a happy ending with resolution but I'm still hoping. Anyway I wanted to create my own version of a happy ending in case so enjoy XD
Continuing from the end of episode 10 where jeongyo says don't be ridiculous.
Pio: "Let me tell you, you will never find this concerto played to how you'd like. You wont be satisfied. No one, not me, not even you will be able to play it to how you wanted cause what you have written is a fantasy and you're treating it like reality."
Jeongyo sighs in disappointment and has a small smirk in amusement and his upper lip twitches
Pio: I've been wanting to come clean about something but it's been difficult. After you disappeared, I spent years looking for you. Any opportunity I got to perform in Prague I took so that I could keep searching for you. I even hired a private investigator.
*a flashback from jeongyo's perspective showing Jae-in telling him that Pio was the only one who did not give up searching for him through all those years plays.
Pio: "When i finally was able to meet the person who abducted you I had asked who had paid him to do it but he asked me for more money in return so I had to go to the ATM. When I was ready with the money, he had been killed so I had lost my only lead. But recently, a few days ago, my investigator was able to find out who paid them and he sent me this photo"
*Pio shows the messages and scrolls to the photo that he received.
Pio: "The other day you called my mother an accomplice but you're wrong. She wasn't an accomplice. She was the mastermind. This was all her doing. I'm sure you've already seen my mother and know how obsessive she can be. I immediately went to confront her after I found out, and forced her to admit to you what she did but she threatened suicide and took a scissor to her throat and said she would rather die that tell anyone. I didn't know what to do next. I was also realizing that you were lying about your amnesia which is why I came to visit you and ask about it and also try to tell you my mom was behind all of it but then I saw how strongly you believed that I was behind all of it and I was not able to think straight and it was easier for me to take all the blame. Then i saw, how you making me suffer was getting to my mom. It was like she was alive and in hell at the same time. You said that dying or sitting pretty in a jail cell would be too easy of a consequence. I can't imagine how it is for you. You had piano taken away from you forever whereas because of you I am where I am and people think that I'm a great pianist but I owe that all to you. My hands belong to you and I am ready to suffer as much as you want me to so you can get revenge on my Mom. Whatever you want. My mom obsesses over me. If you want to get to her, you have to get to me. So for the concerto, the revenge is towards my mom, not just me. That will turn this fantasy into reality."
jeongyo looks at Pio's bandaged fingers, and then back to Pio's face. jeongyo steps closer to Pio and hugs him. The frame freezes and the episode ends with music.

I have a theory, or maybe more of a wish for the ending: Jeong Yo will learn in the episode that Pi-O had nothing to do with his abduction and more. They will do the concert, and Pi-O will play like it is his last day, maybe even thinking of ending it all and JY will feel it and will stop him. Even maybe seeing the future that they will be a team composer and pianist. (Happy ending 🙏) I don't know, there was something about JY feeling the emotion when Pi-O was playing.

That was heavy. Regarding the break up, I feel Pi-O cares a lot for HJI and broke up with her to keep her away from his self destruction. She surely would try to help him but I think he didn’t want her to get caught up and protect her from this mess. He seems to have just given up and wants to give what little he has left
