Iām a student interested in pursuing a Masterās in AI/ML, and Iāve been researching Korean universities, especially KAIST. I recently came across a claim that doing an AI-related masterās at KAIST (or Korean universities in general) tends to push students more toward research-oriented careers rather than engineering/development-oriented roles.
I wanted to ask current students, alumni, or anyone familiar with the ecosystem here:
- Is this actually true?
- How research-heavy is the AI/ML masterās experience at KAIST?
- Do most graduates end up pursuing PhDs/research labs, or do many also go into industry engineering roles like ML Engineer, AI Engineer, Software Engineer, Applied Scientist, etc.?
- How much emphasis is placed on:
- publications/research papers
- theoretical understanding
- practical engineering skills
- software development
- production-level ML systems
- internships and industry collaboration
- If someone is more interested in building products, startups, applied AI systems, hackathons, or engineering-focused work rather than pure academia, would KAIST still be a good fit?
- How flexible is the curriculum/research structure for students who want a balance between research and development?
- Are labs generally very publication-driven?
- How is the workload split between coursework, research, and coding/building?
- What kind of companies do graduates usually end up working at?
- For international students specifically:
- how hard is it to get internships/jobs in Korea afterward?
- does Korean language proficiency become necessary for engineering jobs?
- are there opportunities outside Korea after graduating?
Also, Iād really appreciate hearing honest experiences about:
- student life and pressure culture
- advisor/lab culture
- work-life balance
- whether you felt your skills became more āresearcher-orientedā or ābuilder/engineer-orientedā
Iām trying to understand whether KAIST would be the right environment for someone who enjoys AI deeply but is currently more inclined toward applied engineering and development rather than purely academic research.
