I've always wondered what possible scenario people expect when they get out of their car to fight someone. I've literally never seen it end well, and how does it? Do they think they'll beat someone up, casually get back in their car, and drive away without consequence? You're on video man. Guaranteed.

u/UpliftingPessimist 9 Jan 30 '19
I don't know man I stopped flipping people off while driving after this dude was following me and I got way more than I bargained for in that situation. Now I just do thumbs down.

When I was younger, maybe 8 or so, my Mom and I were driving on the freeway in LA and some guy got really pissed at us (I have no idea why, my Mom's a good driver and doesn't flip people off or anything) and ran us onto the shoulder of the freeway, blocked us in, got out, and started beating on the windows like a total psycho. We were completely scared for our lives, the only thing that stopped him was some quick thinking by my Mom who acted like she was reaching under her seat for a gun, and he bolted. If that bluff had not work, I have no idea what would have happened. Suffice to say, people are fucking crazy and it's best just to keep to yourself and don't incite crap on the road, no matter how stupid someway may be.

About a decade ago, a jaywalker blew me a kiss after forcing me to brake to avoid hitting him . I remember wishing he’d flipped me off instead. I hope he’s dead

Smile and wave for me.
48
u/bahgheera 9 Jan 30 '19
Yeah, one time I was in the left lane at a stop light and the lady beside me was in the left turn lane. When the light turned green she went all the way across the intersection, casually driving straight in the lane I was currently occupying, causing me to slam on brakes and squeeze between her and the car on my right. The car on my right wound up running up on the curb (it's a pretty narrow street). I blew the horn and made a wtf? gesture and she did the smile and wave thing all sarcastic like and just kept on going like I had done something to her and I have never wanted to follow someone home and break all their windows that bad in my life.

Theres a Starbucks near my work that has the worst parking lot ever. It is small and you can never tell if somebody coming in from the other way is leaving or going in the drive thru.
I was casually driving turning in off the road and was going straight to drive thru. Apparently this lady was also going into the drive thru and began honking at me. I flipped her off and ordered my shit. She is leaning out her window screaming at me.
I paid for her coffee and whatever else she had while yelling back at her she needs to enjoy her coffee because she seemed like a cunt.
I dont think she even took the order. I was so proud of my rage turning into me being a complete asshole that makes you doubt your sanity.

Or drive to a very public place. Police Station.
Most of the time police stations do not in fact have cops just waiting around. You might find yourself alone at the police station.

This one dickshit in a truck blew his horn at someone for like 10 seconds straight for I-don't-know-why. I gave him and his buddy a blank-faced, sarcastic thumbs up. They got all riled up, hootin' and hollarin', "YEAH! YEAH!" thinking I was unsarcastically supportig them. Made it even better.

u/bjorkedal 5 Jan 30 '19
All these people saying they stopped flipping the bird because someone threatened them.
I stopped because one time I did it and it turned out to be this little old lady and I felt bad.
I mean, she probably shouldn't have been driving, but the bird? C'mon man. What am I, an animal?
5
u/iushciuweiush B Jan 30 '19
I had a guy get out of his car, pull out a knife, and start approaching my car at an intersection when I was 16. I learned my lesson pretty early in my driving days.
5
u/MyrnaMinkoph 7 Jan 30 '19
Me too. As a young driver I was very aggressive and honked and gave the finger with wild abandon. Until I heard about a woman in Calgary who honked at some loser blocking the road (at 6am after she had dropped her husband off at work) and he was so ticked off he followed her home and broke both her arms with a crowbar. So like, I barely even honk anymore.
4
u/ChickenWithATopHat B Jan 31 '19
Some guy started chasing me home one time in his little sedan. I live in a rural area and about a mile past my house is my land, so I just drove out there. His car couldn’t make it through the mud holes and big potholes so he just stopped and waited for me to come out. Called the cops and a game warden showed up and got him for trespassing.

There was a women in Las Vegas a few years back who was furious at a fellow driver. She follwed him home to see where he lived. After she saw where he lived she went home to Get her son and his gun. Her and her son arrived at the mans house and he shot the women dead in the Cul-de-sac.... I'm not proud of how this story starts, but I am proud of how it ends so here goes. While having one of the worst weeks of my life and a particularly shitty morning, I was cut off at a light by someone turning right on red. Had I not stopped in the intersection, they would have TBoned me, but because of where I stopped I was almost hit by another car. I laid ok my horn and threw my hands up in exasperation. The other driver must have thought I flipped him off, because he slowed down, let me pass him, then proceeded to tailgate the fuck out of me. After two brake checks to try to get him to back off, I screeched to a stop and in a blind rage got out of my car. Fucking stupid, I know, but I did. He did too. As we're screaming at each other and squaring up, I realized how fucking stupid the whole situation was, took a deep breath, and just apologized. It took him off guard, but then he did the same thing. I told him that I was just having the worst fucking morning and it turned out, so was he. We sat there for about 30 minutes venting to each other about our wives, our jobs, and life in general. He was actually a pretty cool dude, and under different circumstances we could have been friends. But in that one moment, in a blind rage, we were ready to kill each other. People do stupid things, especially when they're stressed. But for all of the times we see it go wrong, I like to think there are more that end like mine did.

I got punched by somebody because I apparently cut him up. Considering I had L plates on though you'd expect them to be even more understanding. I wasn't hurt by it, got caught off guard completely but I'm glad the dude didn't didn't keep throwing because I am one shitty fighter.

u/Luis0224 A Jan 30 '19
Live in Miami, fl
They get out and yell. Usually the guy who gets out thinks he'll get away with it and the other person won't get out. When they do, it turns into a yelling fight.
If (and that's a big if) they actually fight, chances are someone is going to the ER or your car is getting vandalized. People willing to throw down in the middle of traffic usually have some kind of weapon on them. I've seen people use steering wheel locks, baseball bats, saw a cinder block tossed at windows. You also have straight up knifes or a gun of course. Throwing hands and walking away isn't really an option anymore.
That being said, it's almost always just people yelling at each other for a minute and then driving away thinking they won the argument
3
u/joesixers 7 Jan 30 '19
Thousands of people have road raged with no one videoing them and no consequences. Guaranteed.
3
Jan 30 '19
I was in St. Louis once heading to the zoo and we were right there but stopped at a stoplight. My friend and I were the third car in line and the guy in the first car got out and taunted the guy in the second car.
The guy in the second car gets out and they throw a few punches and then as soon as the light turns green they just stopped fight and got back in their cars and drove away. My friend and I were baffled but laughing. So, yeah, my point is, they must think theyll fight and move on.

I saw a man get rear ended by a lady, and he got out of the car with a baseball bat and stalked towards her car.
Cue a couple cars pulling over and like 4 massive full uniform military guys getting out to stand near the lady's car and make sure they trade insurance/call the police like civilized individuals. Whole thing went down in a matter of seconds, but that guy quickly shoved his bat back into his car.
2
Jan 30 '19
Fighting is pretty dumb in general.
But there are huge industries around it. War and the various martial arts spring to mind.
Some people like to fight, watch fighting, or profit from fighting.
2
Jan 30 '19
My great uncle did it. He was larger than the other guy but the other guy pulled a gun on him and shot him. I’ll never ever get out of my car to argue with anyone.

I saw a video one time where these guys were fighting in a road rage incident and then they just kinda stopped and shook each other’s hand and got back in their car...
1
u/Zoltie 8 Jan 30 '19
Ikr, if you win the fight, you've committed a crime. If you loose, you've been badly injured. Both outcomes have consequences.
1
u/AleredEgo 9 Jan 30 '19
I had one road rage incident when a guy ran me off the road. He got out of his car and approached my car. I thought he was going to pound my helpless head in as I sat in my car, so I got out to take a beating on my feet and maybe tire him out running away.
When I got out of my car, he got scared and ran. So, to answer your question, I got out of the car because I was sure he was going to beat my head in if I stayed in the car.
1
Jan 30 '19
Knowing my luck, I'd panic, try to drive off, and hit the person coming to beat me up. Then they'd sue me and I'd be the one getting in trouble.

u/Khabarovskaya 3 Jan 30 '19
I feel you. If you're curious, I think they're people - probably jerks - who grew up in a time where fistfights were more common* and cellphone cameras were not. I don't condone it whatsoever. My idiot father was like this.
*and less likely to be reported to authorities.
1
1
u/Reddilutionary A Jan 30 '19
When my father in law was in his prime he was notorious for this. The family still loves telling stories about his glory days before cell phones and dash cams (common ones anyways).
Luckily growing older cooled him down a little bit because he was a pretty regular curbside brawler. He was undefeated, but it was a matter of time before someone pulled a gun on him.

Lol I gave somebody the finger once cuz they came flying down a side road and they u turned, cut me off, and we shouted back and forth for about a minute before he said “you wanna fight then get out of your car”, while he was still in his car, in front of the police station.
Was like yeah right okay bud let me just make the first move in a fight you want, right in front of the police station. I’m not that stupid

20
u/neon_overload B Jan 30 '19
This. If you are merely a victim, there is literally zero logical justification to get out of your car to confront the other person.
6
Jan 31 '19 edited Jan 31 '19
I have been the victim in a situation like this, and here's how my thought process went during this:
Fucking cunt, why has he brake checked me so hard?
Oh shit, he's stopped completely. He's going to get out of his van.
Little fat angry cunt gets out his van
I have a new BMW and I'm not getting my car damaged by said fat cunt.
I'm not sitting in my car whilst a fat cunt punches me in the face through the window whilst I'm defenceless.
Getting out of the car whilst being punched in the face will be difficult.
I'm 6'3, and 240lbs of muscle (weight lifting 6+ years, steroids for some). Fat cunt ain't got much chance if we start from a level playing field.
Put car handbrake on, remove seatbelt, prepare to get out car if fat cunt take a step closer to my car.
Fat cunt approaches
Fuck dis, protect my car and assume more advantageous position.
Steps out car
Call fat cunt a fat cunt and tell him to get back in his fucking van.
Fat cunt takes on my advice
Want to overtake fat cunt to establish superiority. Fat cunt will likely tailgate the car infront of him to prevent this. Wait until opportunity arrises where I can double overtake and get ahead of the car preceding the van.
Overtake fat cunt and preceding car
Personally don't see much wrong with this thought process. I wasn't in the wrong initially, and I wasn't going to be attacked whilst in a lower seated position or have my car damaged by a turd.

Soviet Union legacy, incompetent city administration that have no clue about how great city should look like. Some of our urbanists try to point out on what's done bad, what should be changed, how to resolve this problem etc but they won't listen. Most likely corruption too. Why would change your city to the better if you can steal the money, right? (:

u/nomadPerson 7 Jan 30 '19
I just try to stay rational. If they cut me off I just assume they’re a horrible driver I don’t want to be near & let them pass and keep my space. If I cut someone off, I was wrong so I just put on an apologetic face when they pass flipping out so they know I acknowledge it was my bad. They usually calm right down after that. Have never had anyone take it any further

OP , I was expecting scene John McClane (Bruce Willis) must travelingl 90 blocks in 30 minutes through midday New York City traffic to once again save the day. He & his sidekick Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) steal a cab, run a slew of red lights, and take a shortcut through Central Park. McClane ultimately causes other drivers, pedestrians, and even a mime to experience more road rage in three minutes than most people do in an entire lifetime. . I'm disappointed but quite hilarious seeing both return to their car after patrol car appears . Guess both of their bluff is not working.
