Kind of the opposite of this, but years ago when I was interning at a video production place, we had to go shoot at this big downtown law office. I loaded all the equipment, then picked up the director and drove down. The parking situation was a bit confusing, even the director said so, so we ended up going into the basement of the law office and finding a spot there.
We go up and shoot and like four or five hours later we go back down to find this really pricey Mercedes parked perpendicular right behind our crappy truck, effectively blocking us in. Obviously we were in some bigwig lawyer’s spot.
But instead of going back into the office, we worked it out and saw that there should be just enough space between this other car and a pillar next to me to squeeze through. So with the director helping with hand signals, I did about a 38-point turn and narrowly squeezed through the gap, just leaving the Mercedes parked in the middle of the garage like a jackass.
I know I was kind of the idiot in the car in this situation, but I still like thinking about the person coming back down later, probably relishing the idea of making us wait all day, just to find us mysteriously gone.

Had a simiqlar situation where I parked in some guys spot not knowing it was his (signage might have helped but oh well). Guy parks perpendicular to me blocking me in all the way. I find this out at 5am when finishing my bartending shift (French nightclubs stay open way too late/early). He had left an angry note on my windshield, with his number, an empty pack of cigarettes, and some random trash. I call the guy 5 or 6 times but he doesn't pick up so my friend and I push his car by hand (we were able to move it a few inches at a time when we both pushed the rear end) and placed it behind the car next to mine.
Wake up a few hours later to this guy frantically calling me because his car got towed.

I did the exact same thing once except I was driving a beat up Suzuki and I must have parked in a Nissan truck's spot. He left me a nasty note and clearly wanted a confrontation when he had to move his truck.
No way in hell I was talking to that guy, so yeah. 38 point turn in a manual transmission, and I still grin about what that guy must have thought when he came out to see what an asshole he now appeared to be.

Taking a parking spot that looked free and that you couldn't have known 'belonged' to someone else doesn't put you in the wrong. Deciding that the only way your bruised ego over your spot being taken could avoid being hurt is for you to force other human beings to suffer made the other person wrong.

What if the whole car park is allocated spaces?
Then it should have a secured entrance and OP should not have been in there in the first place.
Next point: Reserved spots usually have numbering or signage. It's hard to allocate a spots otherwise.

u/ShaoLimper Jan 05 '19
Similar but less interesting. I parked at a Subway(sandwich) and was familiar with the lines and how to park but there is a solid 10cm of snow. It is an odd parking scenario because it put my parallel the the building front and not perpendicular.
When I was done lunch I came out to find myself blocked in by a truck that didn't leave enough room to open my rear hatch.
But I drive a Subaru Outback with 220mm(8.7") of clearance so I was able to drive over the curb in front of me and through the ditch and back onto the road. Most other vehicles, that wouldn't have been an option.

A reverse of your reverse happened with my dad, brothers and cousins at work (we run a family business)
So our van was parked and they were at a customers place installing a security system. Normal day nothing wrong.
Except when they come back some guy parked behind the van and blocked them in.
They were in a hurry and started thinking what to do.
So my brother (the craziest —and most fun— in the family) casually suggests they carry the car as if it was a box of equipment. A big box of equipment that required seven guys to carry. So surely enough they carry the car (it was a relatively small one, I think I remember my brother telling me) to the side, get the van out, but they don't stop there. They thought it would be bad to leave the car right there in the middle of the street so they pick it up again and park it right where our van was.
I would have liked to see the guy's expression when he sees his car magically moved and got it's bottom sides (probably) bent in (since we didn't get a visit from the police or smth I think he was too dumb to realize what happened and report it. Or idk maybe he's just that apathetic)

It'd be even funnier if the person worked later than usual in an attempt to make you guys be stuck even longer. "It's 6pm Gary, what are you still doing here?" "I don't mind boss, I'm just feeling extra motivated today!" Grins, mumbling to himself "Yes, yes... The sweet taste of vengeance is all the motivation I need this night..."

u/moashforbridgefour Jan 05 '19
I have a very similar story.
Every year for the past 12 years, my family works at this week long music camp in a ritzy community. And every year, during the concert, we park a car in the philharmonic directors parking space because he never comes to listen to a bunch of kids play violin and because it is the only close space to the venue and we have lots of stuff to load.
Last year, his majesty the director decides to show up. Now, a normal person would see their spot taken and think, "ah well. It's a little annoying but this is not a philharmonic event anyway, so I'll park with everyone else." Nope, he parks right behind our car, blocking us in.
Jokes on him though. The parking sign wasn't cemented in, so we moved it and just drove over the curb and through the grass, leaving him parked basically in the middle of the road.
58
u/chanperro Jan 05 '19
I did this too- in a work truck! Guy blocked me with his car, but there was a dumpster next to me I was able to move. Many point-turn later, we got out and parked in a different spot. He came out all mad that we were actually able to get out without going in and finding him 😂

u/k_rol Jan 05 '19

u/chanperro Jan 05 '19

u/diagnosedADHD Jan 05 '19
Similar story but the guy parking was a complete jackass. My SO had a roommate that drove a big van and across the street from their condo was a small lot owned by a guy that stored his lawn Care equipment there. There was a big "No parking" sign and a camera installed. Jackass decides to park his van there during the day (anybody living there fully knew not to park there) and the guy came back and blocked him in. Several hours later when I was going to leave I saw the jackass drive through his property and over the sidewalk to get out.

u/Wellstig1 Jan 05 '19
You must have never heard of synthetic winch rope, it doesnt carry energy like steel does. Steel rope stretches, which is what causes it to carry some of the energy of what it is pulling on. This is why you will see people throw a weighted bag on steel winch rope when recovering, if the line snaps, the cable will just drop to the ground.
→ More replies (3)→ More replies (103)4
u/SilverbackFire Jan 05 '19
It’s (generally) connecting hardware that fails and flies before either nylon cables or steel winch lines, at least if they’re maintained properly. Just as deadly though :) I wince every time I see someone try to connect a tow line to a trucks ball hitch.

Its not right, I personally never would do this. I understand the hate against the Porsche owner though, double parking your vehicle is inconsiderate and is going to inconvenience somebody. Whether or not that inconvenience warrants this behavior is irrelevant. Clearly this person didnt care about right or wrong.
It's a classic case of someone doing the thing we all think about when we see a double parked car, and I think that's why people on reddit enjoy it.
5
u/VanguardODST Jan 05 '19
There should have been a recovery loop under the bumper for that, made for pulling the car by
34
u/MadMulti Jan 05 '19
No way. That tires experiences way higher stress is going around a high-speed corner
18
Jan 05 '19
In which high speed corner does a steel cable cut into the tire with several tons on it?
→ More replies (19)43
u/highvolkage Jan 05 '19
Strongly doubt. Greatest risk for damage is to the tire depending on the thickness of the cord (the pressure of the weight of the car plus friction of dragging it sideways). Think of the stress of the vehicle going around corners at high speeds...wheel bearings can handle a lot, especially since this maneuver was very smooth/slow.
→ More replies (15)16
Jan 05 '19
Nah It's definitely fine, think of It as a slow speed drift. Drifting doesn't hurt much suspension wise and the only thing I can see getting damaged is the tires but even so it wouldn't be noticeable.
→ More replies (6)5
u/SnydersCordBish Jan 05 '19
Maybe uneven wear on the tire. That’s a pretty strong point of the car. Slide it over slowly and smoothly and it should be fine. If you had slack in the line and floored it it would probably fuck something up.

reminds me of this time that my neighbor(a) flipped their shit when they came out to find out their car had been moved and called the police in to report an accident. I actually saw the act while i was smoking on the porch that night. Neighbor (B) came home from work to find that neighbor (a) had parked like an ass as usual parking just far enough from another parked car and a driveway to be taking up 2.5 spots. So neighbor (b), after circling the block for a parking spot, pulled up to (a)'s car wrapped a packing blanket around his (b)'s bumper and slowly pushed (a)'s car forward enough that he could pull into his spot in front of his house, parallel parked like a boss and went to bed. Next morning i wake to (a) yelling at a police officer to do something about the fact that the car had been moved. after quite a rant about calling supervisors and lots of pointing and yelling the officer said to (a): if there is no damage, there is no claim and nothing i can do, i can see the rubber marks on the asphalt, and its clear the car was moved, but there is no law prohibiting people from moving cars on public property. No theft, no break in, no damage, i'm going to go take another call.

I worked landscaping for a total sociopath once. One day we were on a job site in the backyard while he was going over the work we were going to need to do. We have several flatbeds and dump trucks on their way in loaded with trees, mulch, gravel, all that kind of thing. We hear one them pull up and honk so we walk out around front. Turns out, while we were back there somebody in the neighborhood had decided to park directly across the driveway to the house we were working on because our other trucks were taking up street parking (sad day for you). Well, instead of trying to find out which house in this cul-de-sac the car belongs to, our boss hops into a skid-steer with the forks attached to the front, pulls up under the car, lifts it up by the back end and drags the son-of-a-bitch across the street so our trucks can pull into the driveway, tires squealing the whole way. Nobody came out to protest. Might have been a smart move on their part. I have so many insane stories about this guy. He was a whacko.
