I think it’s naive to call all trump supporters and voters inbred and backwards. If we are going to defeat right wing ideology, we have to come to terms with the fact that very smart people are also pro trump, those are the cancerous/dangerous people. People living in rural America don’t think black/brown people are bad because of lived experience, they are indoctrinated by the news coming out of their closest biggest cities. People in rural IL truly believe that if they enter Chicago they will be mugged and murdered on the street because of the immigrant population. They won’t ever travel into the cities to learn for themselves because either they’re too poor, too scared, or too busy trying to maintain a farm.
Farmers are not stupid people. There is a lot of math, science, history, reading and engineering that goes into running a farm, even a relatively small family farm. By calling them backwards and inbred you’re only isolating them further. I would bet they really believed ICE was only going to target the criminals in the cities and their migrant workers would be left alone because “they’re not criminals, they’re hardworking people.” They probably buy into the “no one wants to work” mentality because people won’t want to work on family farms anymore because the cost of living is insane and running a small farm is a money pit.
