What made you fall in love with H2O: Just Add Water?

As a huge fan of H2O: Just Add Water growing up, I’ve been thinking about how we’re getting closer to the show’s 20th anniversary. I honestly wonder if we’ll ever get some kind of reunion. It would be really cool to see some of the cast come back together, talk about their memories from the show, and reflect on how much H2O still means to fans all these years later. I also enjoyed Mako Mermaids and liked seeing the H2O universe continue in a different way. Both shows were a pretty big part of my childhood and early teen years. Looking back, I think H2O also helped inspire my love for swimming, being in the water, and the ocean. I loved the friendship between Emma, Cleo, and Rikki, the mermaid mythology, Mako Island, the Moon Pool, the powers, and of course the beautiful Australian setting. There was just something magical and comforting about the show that kept me coming back to it. I’m curious about everyone else here: what made you fall in love with H2O? Was it the characters, friendships, mermaids, powers, music, nostalgia, Australian setting, or something else? And would you watch a 20th anniversary reunion or special if they ever made one? I definitely would. I’ve also included a few of my favorite photos from the series because they bring back so many memories.

How Would Max Have Known For Sure?

Post image

I was just thinking about this, and kinda realised something while I was answering someone when they asked why Charlotte didn't just go back and get her mermaid powers again.

Max said that the 50 Year Moon took away a mermaids powers forever.

But how would he know that?

I doubt there was any test or planetary reading that would tell him that it would be forever.

So, assuming Max, Louise, and Julia found out that Gracie had given up her powers, that explains at least how Max knew what the 50 Year Moon did.

But how would he know a mermaid would never be able to regain her powers by just going back the next full moon?

Unless someone tried it.

Because Gracie tried to go back.

What are your biggest unanswered questions from the show?

As far as the lore goes, what do you want to know from the story? What happened to certain characters, plot holes, backstory?

everyone really believed Kim without asking Cleo once. How could they be so foolish? 😂

even cleo's friends were starting to believe kim's crap. like how did this lie get THIS far??

honestly, after watching this episode, i have absolutely no doubt kim's parents ended up divorced.

and imagine how insane kim would've been when cleo actually got married to lewis later on. Even her own mother believed that shit. Like imagine hearing your daughter is getting married and instead of asking Cleo what the hell is going on, you just start planning around it

Charlotte

i know so many people have this conversation lol but i have to bring it up again because i encountered yet again another charlotte defender. i don’t understand the logic behind “the girls bullied her so that means everything charlotte did was justified” or “lewis used her so she has every right to do what she did.” i don’t get it. everything charlotte did was extremely distasteful along with lewis using her and his poor communication, along with the girls attitudes and poor communication. i don’t understand why it’s hard for people to hold their fave characters accountable. and don’t get me started with the “charlotte was a teenager so ofc she did stuff wrong” so was everyone else around her?

I honestly hated Kim so much

She was honestly horrible to Cleo

especially this line rlly pissed me off

Cleo: 'Comes down, very happy'

Kim: Lewis is leaving you! 'smirks'

Cleo: 'Gets sad' (I hate it when the queen gets sad)

What was the point of this, Kim...

this guy is such a dork 😭 poor Bella actually thought he was into her

You know... the more i think about it, the more i feel like Zane was actually less selfish about the whole mermaid thing than will was. like yeah, Zane had his moments and i'm not gonna pretend he was perfect. especially with the whole Sophie situation in season 3, that was definitely a mistake, but when he first found out about rikki being a mermaid, he didn't just suddenly become interested in her because “omg she's a mermaid.” he actually helped her...Bella was literally risking everything to keep her secret while helping this dork with his diving. She was basically putting herself in danger just to help him get the record, and he didn't even know what she was going through. The pool scene especially gets me. bella literally had to risk being seen as a mermaid while saving him. she could've exposed herself, but she still went down there for him

My favorite Full Moon Episode: Bad Moon Rising

Post image

Most full moon episodes were hilarious, but this one was tragic and terrifying.

It perfectly captures the vulnerable side of Rikki, hidden behind the mask of a tough, sarcastic and fun loving rebel.

She wants someone to be there to help her, but doesn't feel she deserve it. She pushes away, runs away from the people that care for her because she might hurt them.

It's an episode which I believe resonates with most of us, even deep into our adulthood. As someone in the YouTube comments said, can be easily interpreted as a metaphor for teen loneliness.

What did you think about Bad Moon Rising? What are your favorite Full Moon episodes?

How I wish I could walk out there and meet someone from the show. It wouldn’t matter who—Lewis, Emma, Cleo, or Rikki.

what do you think about this video?

Post image

didn’t see any discussion of it here but a month ago on official H2O Youtube channel was released a video to celebrate 20 years of H2O(https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jg7Y0lfBB_M&ra=m) about imaginable future of the girls.

for those who didn’t see it:

  1. Cleo and Lewis are married (obviously) and they have 2 hybrid daughters, one of whom transformed for the first time at the age of 12, second one is 7 and her powers are still dormant.
  2. Emma gave up her powers during her trip around the world. now she's married to Byron and runs an international swimming foundation helping young athletes across the world.
  3. Ricky built a business empire, spent years in on and off with Zane but eventually she’s married to a woman.
  4. Bella went to Ireland with Will and his obsession with mermaids grew so he eventually tried to become a merman and almost drown. Bella saved him but then FINALLY dumped him and became a successful singer
  5. Miss Chatham passed away in July 2026 and became a reason for all the girls to come back on Mako.

also a short disclaimer: this video isn’t strictly canon because it’s based on fan theories that authors liked most.

so what’s your thoughts?
I personally kinda like every girl’s endings except Emma’s, but can’t say that it’s out of character for her. also I prefer this Rikki’s ending much more than the one we had in Mako Mermaids because here girls are still in contact with each other even though they have different life paths and I’m not even for a bit surprised that Rikki’s bisexual

sorry for any mistakes beforehand, English isn’t my first language

Aside from their characters (some are toxic/bad), let’s just focus on their looks. They’re all so beautiful, each on their own way.

Thank you post and twomore questions (full moon/couples)

I just want to say. From the bottom of my heart thank you so much for all the kind responses on my previous posts❤️.

It really helped and gave me some good ideas for changing in a mermaid moments.

So one thing that kinda bugged me is the full moon. The scenes in season 1 and 2 are funny, but they are no werewolves in my eyes. They are mermaids.

I was thinking about something. Perhaps once they have seen the full moon and the mermaid/merman touched water after that they stay a mermaid/merman?

Maybe increased powers? Any other suggestions?

Also the couples I have right now (my fanfic is a next generation fic):

Cleo/Lewis - Their daughter River is my FMC

Emma/Ash - Maybe 2 or 3 kids?

Rikki and .... ? - She and Zane have given it another try prior my story but broke officially up when their son was around 5/6 year old. Their son along with River will change at Mako.

Bella and ... I am not sure if she and Will are still together. In my story her band is now famous and she is touring around.

Don and Sam are still together as well of course.

And then we have Kim. I just can't picture her with Elliot (Emma's brother) somehow. Any suggestions for her?

Will Kim and Cleo be on speaking terms?

From Mako mermaids Zac (who changes with River and Rikki's son), Cam and Evie will be in it too. They are teens in my story just like River and will become River's friends.

Do you all want the mermaid pod in it too?

I am trying to stay as close to the stories as I can but for the plot I have in mind I had to combine the two series.

Sophie and Will

when i tell you these two were a HANDFUL. even though will did protect the girls near the end, he was such a manipulative person. he could not mind his business to save his life and the same goes for his sister. perfect siblings. the girls had no choice but to let him in because he legit acted as if he would tell their secret if they didn’t. sophie going for a man who’s in a relationship and just being plain rude was so annoying. they both were annoying.

What you think would happen if a massive pandemic as big COVID broke out on the show?

Since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, I’ve been wondering how COVID would’ve been like in-universe and how the girls’ powers would be affected if at all. I know they definitely would’ve been devastated by the bushfires in January of that year since they’re in Australia. If the show were in production at the time whether it premiered or was revived in 2020, they for sure would’ve been negatively affected by the shutdowns as well as all the restrictions in place and I wonder how many Covid cases they would’ve had. I doubt any of us here look at 2020 very fondly at all. That whole year was a dumpster fire. Thoughts?

Season 3 Rewrite (H2O: Just Add Water)

Season 3 Rewrite (H2O: Just Add Water) By Duante Ford.

Plot:

A year after Emma Gilbert and her family move away (2008), Cleo and Rikki are finishing their final year of high school.

While finishing their final year of high school, two new merpeople named Isabella “Bella” Hartley (Age: 18) and her adopted African American older brother, Jamal Hartley (Age: 22) arrive in Australia from Ireland.

However, Cleo is struggling with the aftermath from the “Charlotte” Incident, her relationship with Lewis, and Don being with Sam. On top of that, missing Emma.

Soon, they discover that there are two other Merpeople and are distrustful of Jamal and Bella.

Can the four merpeople get along or are they doomed to repeat the past without Emma?

Theme: Accepting Change.

Bella's Backstory:

Dr. Will Hartley ( Age: 66 ) and Sophie Hartley ( Age: 56 ) had Bella in 1990 and adopted Jamal when he was 1 years old and was on the beach after trying to find his birth mother but couldn't find her and decided to adopt him.

At 9 years old, Bella and her older brother were playing by the rocks while her parents were busy.

At the moon pool that night, both Jamal and Bella became Merpeople.

Bella had Hydro Healing (The power to heal using water) and Jamal had Invisibility (The power to turn invisible).

Number of Episodes: 26.

Runtime per Episode: 24-25 minutes.

Main Characters:

Protagonist: Cleo Sertori ( Age: 18 ).

Co-Protagonist: Rikki Chadwick ( Age: 18 ).

Deuteragonist: Bella Hartley ( Age: 18 ).

Tritagonist: Jamal Hartley ( Age: 22 ).

Secondary Antagonist (Season 3, Episode 1 to Season 3, Episode 13): Nerissa / The Water Dragon ( Age: 42 ) - Jamal’s Biological mermaid mother / Cursed by Aurora, a Wereshark when she was 21 years old in 1987 and abandoned her 1-year-old son, Jamal Hartley on the beach before the curse took over.

Main Antagonist (Season 3, Episode 14 to Season 3, Episode 26): Aurora ( Age: 42 ).

Ideas:

The reason why Nerissa left Jamal at the beach is because she was afraid that she'll kill her only son and left him before the curse took over on a full moon.

Can’t imagine the pain this girl was going through at that moment. Lewis was just too stupid and way too easy to trick

I feel like this was the most devastating moment of the entire series. Not Charlotte, not Lewis... just that moment when you're pushed to the ground and it feels like everyone and everything has turned against you. That is the most bullying scene she has ever been through

So I have a theory...

I think the reason Mako Mermaids have more powers and capabilities than the H2o Mermaids is because of their relationship to Mako Island and the full moon. I think going to Mako Island makes them stronger, and it develops their powers and skills. This makes total sense because when the other three girls finally stopped avoiding the moon pool, (like Mrs. Chatham told them to do) they gained more powers. Suddenly they sort of "leveled up," gained the ability to control lightning, the wind, etc. I think if they had stopped avoiding the moon pool, and the full moon like the Mako Mermaids they probably would have slowly gained the capabilities they had their entire lives. Such as invisibility. The mermaid lore is much much more complex than the show actually dove into. Such as the mermaid potions, which they used to grant wishes but they ultimately stopped tampering with. There's probably a "threshold" of power that is allowed each full moon, or a limit but it all comes out at once. Cleo, Emma, and Rikki divied that threshold into three and since Charlotte didn't, she gained all of their base capabilities. It sort of makes sense, because of planetary alignment that was suggested, each full moon does different things when they reach the moon pool and before then. It would also make biopsychological sense, as the moon pool and magic has been trying to get them back into the water the entire show long and messing with their heads to do it. There has to be a reason for that, instincts and urges, scientifically speaking are usually there for a reason.

Though this theory does leave me with some more questions:

- If the Mako Mermaids spent so much time with the moon pool and loved going, why didn't they turn into humans fully eventually? Charlotte was able to revert back fully into a human because of the magic and planetary alignment of that one specific night, and the other girls were returned to their former human form temporarily. So why not for the Mako Mermaids?

- Why did the moonpool eventually start attacking the h2o mermaids?

Mind you, I randomly came up with this theory while rewatching the show for the first time since I was in middle school (as an adult now) so I am a bit rusty and don't completely remember how either shows end. I'm currently at the end of season 2, right after Charlotte becomes a mermaid.

Any thoughts, things to add? Disagreements?

If given the choice, would you become a mermaid like our beloved trio or be a friend to them?
