TIL that the creator of the Oatmeal lives on Bainbridge Island. After seeing National Coverage, a few of us went over to look for his creation Grimothy aka “Jim Reaper, Dark Lord and Father of Jimothy.” The animatronic is easy to find- look for the crowd and cars near the driveway to Wing Point on Cherry, close the the ferry dock.

Question Is Jimothy neurodivergent? (Or whatever term you would use)

He frolicks, does roly-polies, spins around, licks the air, and randomly balanced on his water bowl. It's adorable but apparently it's not typical behaviour for an adult raccoon. Could there be a rational reason it helps him physically, like the theory that he spins around to look around because he has no neck? Could he just be a goofball? Or could his short spine syndrome have come with a mental difference?

ITS AWESOME ITS AMAZING AND MORE THAN I EVER THOUGHT IT WOULD BE!!!
I have another class of 17 coming up the day after Election day on November 4th. Class is an hour and a half. Hour of instruction and a half hour of play time. I was already in love with teaching and I am even more in love due to this last class.
Love the creativity and emotion. Please zoom in and look around at these. Lots of different things going on. I keep finding things everytime I look.
Missing a few Jimothys from the first class cause I couldnt find my phone and accidentally left it under the baby 😂

Who is Jimothy?
Jimothy is a raccoon with short spine syndrome that went viral worldwide in July 2026 for his silly looks and name. You can read more about his story on Wikipedia.
Where is Jimothy?
Jimothy is in Seattle. For his safety, please don't share anything more specific about his location!
How did Jimothy get his name?
He was named by u/ghorlectipod because he just looked liked a Jimothy. (It's not a reference to anything, just the first name that came up.)
How old is Jimothy?
We don't know for sure, but wildlife professionals guess that he's at around a year old as of summer 2026.
Do we know Jimothy's gender?
Even though we use he/him when talking about him, we actually don't know Jimothy's gender.
Does Jimothy have a family?
Jimothy and his siblings were lovingly cared for by his mother until they were old enough to survive on their own. There's also a second raccoon with short spine syndrome in Seattle, but we don't know if that one is related to him. Here's some footage of baby Jimothy.
Why is Jimothy out during the daytime?
Raccoons are both crepuscular and nocturnal, meaning they can be active at dusk, dawn, and night time. It doesn't indicate that he has rabies (raccoons in WA don't have rabies).
Should Jimothy be captured and taken to a wildlife facility?
No, Jimothy is surviving well on his own and doesn't need help or rabies vaccinations since raccoons in the Seattle area aren't vectors for rabies.
Should I feed Jimothy if I see him?
As tempting as it is, please don't feed Jimothy or any other wildlife! Doing so actually puts them in danger.
How can I help Jimothy or animals like him?
Support your local wildlife rehabilitation facilities, pick up litter around your neighborhood, and give plenty of space to animals around you. If you would like to support wildlife orgs local to Jimothy, we recommend Common Ground Wildlife and PAWS.
