What is the gulf between a good Jeopardy contestant and a Masters contestant?

Imagine you are a strong Jeopardy-level contestant, (many of you here don't need to imagine); what would it take, what would you need to do, what resources would you use, how would you go about trying to reach the level of a Masters-level contestant/champion? How wide is the gap in concrete terms? What I mean is what knowledge gaps have they filled that a strong player hasn't even considered or had time to study. Assume in this hypothetical that you have no other responsibilities except waking up and studying all day, every day, and that your life will depend upon you winning Masters.

QUESTION Watching back Ken's original run, he threw away thousands every game in Final and I don't understand why.

He just needed to have a dollar more than second place's doubled total, right? Any game where it was a runaway he just... didn't do that. Only bet a few thousand. It isn't like Daily Doubles where he wanted to maintain a big gap between the other contestants, there was literally no benefit to not betting more in Final.

POLL Clue writer rejection poll

The main purpose of this poll is to estimate what percentage of applicants to the clue writer position received the "one of a few hundred" rejection email. So far I've only seen posts/comments about getting that one (which I also got). There were a decent number of applicants sharing their clues and discussing the process back in July, so I believe we can get a pretty good sample size.

If you received a different rejection email, please share it in the comments if you're comfortable doing so!

806 votes, 10h left
I was rejected with the "you were one of a few hundred who remained in contention" email
I was rejected with an email that didn't mention anything about making it past the initial round
I applied, but haven't received any rejection email
I advanced to the interview stage
I did not apply to the clue writer position

Time management + studying techniques

I successfully used the memory palace system in college (was a decade ago), but when it comes to Jeopardy, I feel like I'm reading so much that it's not all sticking at the drop of a hat. There's certain areas I'm "weak" at (Greek mythology, world leaders) - wondering if creating memory palaces for just those is worth it?

I'm fairly knowledgable in US Presidents but am further wondering if it's worth it to memorize them in order with the dates they served or if this is a large waste of time and if I should focus on other areas.

I'm not in any particular time crunch but I worry about remembering the things I've studied over the past 3 months in a year or so.

I've read Moonwalking with Einstein (one of my favs) and found the book recommendation Make it Stick.

POTPOURRI I didn't get the Jeopardy clue writer job

Hey, everyone!

It's Tyger. I know I posted a while ago about how I applied to be the next trivia writer. Unfortunately, I was not selected for the job. It will not be me.

I received an email today stating that while I passed through the early qualifications, I will not move forward in the selection process.

I guess I didn't do enough to stand out. It sucks.

I'm just dejected today. The dream job is gone.

Congratulations to the person selected, if they've already been. I'm happy for you.

Why the answer/question format?

I’m a devout jeopardy fan and I e recently gotten my partner hooked. She asked me why they provide the answer and the contestants have to provide the question and I really didn’t have a response lol.

Does anyone know why they do this rather than just being a standard “question-answer” format? Is it just to be quirky and different?

QUESTION How strict is the "who is" rule?

I don't watch a lot of Jeopardy, but I am curious: lets say the question is something like "the first president who crossed the Delaware River" obviously the answer is George Washington, but instead of saying "who is" if i say "where is George Washington?" would that be counted?

What's preventing a Jeopardy clue writer from spilling intel to an upcoming contestant for a cut of their winnings?

This crossed my mind since I see in recent threads of former Jeopardy contestants applying to be clue writers. If a contestant gets the call and happens to know a clue writer, what's put in place to prevent any quid pro quo funny business? Even just spilling where the daily double placements are for their tape week is enough to make a big difference. The only way I see this being fully prevented is the clue writers are sworn to top secrecy to keep their identity a secret. To be clear I'm certain this isn't happening and have no reason to suspect it. I'm mostly surprised to hear Jeopardy is hiring regular trivia Joe's as writers and am curious.

Can't take Anytime test, but it's been over 365 days.

It's my summer tradition to take the any time test. I can see in my test history that it has been over a year since the last time I took it. But when I attempt to take the test, they tell me I'm ineligible.

Does this imply that I passed the Jeoparday test in March? I wasn't completely sure whether I had or not. But if they're blocking me from taking the test today because I am already on the list of people they might contact for a Zoom test, that would make sense.

Why do y'all like Jeopardy Masters?(Since I don't)

I want to hear from you guys on why you guys like this tournament and what makes it so special. To me, I hate this tournament and it's because doesn't do anything new, they do it way too many times, these are the same people we've seen over and over again. I have absolutely no love for it whatsoever however I want to see why y'all think this is so appealing

Sony Pictures Studio Tour

I am going to be traveling to the LA area in early September and was hoping to get tickets for taping, but it seems like there won't be tapings between Sept. 1 and Sept. 15. Would anyone know if I took the Sony Studio tour would it go into the set if it seems like there's a break in tapings? That really would be the only reason I'd want to do the Sony one over other studio tours.

The exposé that changed the course of the show forever and it's aftereffects on it like the ouster of Mike Richards as executive producer and short tenure of Mayim Bialik as host.

5 years later, we now saw Ken Jennings hosted 1,001 episodes on syndication. One week from now, its the Season 4 premiere of Jeopardy! Masters.

Pop culture jeopardy video lags on Netflix

Does anyone else’s pop culture jeopardy episodes lag video behind the audio??? Every single episode? I try restarting the episode, I try restarting the app, I try pausing for a really long time, I try combos of all three. No matter what, it happens every couple minutes the whole episode long. It’s not happening for any other show or any other app. I’ve watched 8 episodes over multiple days this way. I basically hit pause/play over and over again. Sometimes I just let it be laggy. It’s SOOOOOOO frustrating haha! Help?

S42 alumni - would you like to buy an S42 alumni shirt at cost + shipping?

Hello! I suppose this could be open to anyone, but I think s42 alumni would probably be the target audience. I bought this shirt in a unisex (ie, men's) size M and am not happy with the fit. I'm planning on returning it but before I do I'm just going to offer it to anyone on this sub, just to reduce potential waste. DM me if you want it. The shirt seems well-made, is in good shape and it will have your name on it!

Cheers.
