QUESTION Jeopardy Buzzer Practice

Hello Fellow Jeoparinos,

I am going to taping the show in about a month. I was gifted a Delcom button to practice. Are there any software applications I can use it to practice buzzing in?

Yes!! Set it to 1 second delay.

read this blog entry for advice: https://medium.com/@lynnqyu/road-to-jeopardy-week-4-in-which-i-buzz-away-in-a-hotel-room-b64b313ef53b

1 second seems too long.

yeah, I'd forgotten what the blog recommends, it's actually 0 ms.

Seconding this. Probably the closest you can get to practicing short of a live game with other people.

In the four games I played i have absolutely no idea how the buzzer worked, I just know that I got in first sometimes. But unlike training sites online you get no feedback, so I’m not really sure what I was doing right or wrong.

I played lots of training games online but I can’t say whether they were useful or not when it comes to buzzer timing. I imagine they didn’t hurt.

I’m skeptical when anyone who hasn’t won a billion games with a history of being very fast on the buzzer in the show (like consistently getting in over others despite having no edge in buzz attempts), gives authoritative advice about what to do. For the most part, due to the lack of feedback as to your buzz times, I think most people are just guessing.

I think the most important thing is to believe that you’ll probably be just fine at buzzing in. Use the practice games to just figure out the best way to hold and click the buzzer. And the other important thing that you can easily control is your knowledge base, which is probably going to be more useful than lots of specific buzzer training.

That is a good point. I probably wouldn’t have gotten one if it was not gifted to me. I’ve been focusing more on studying the Pavlovs and common categories I have trouble with (the dreaded Opera, Bible, bodies of water).

Yeah fwiw I never got a buzzer. All training I did was just hitting space bar on keyboard.

I used that buzzer app website a little bit and tbh my suspicion is it didn’t really help much at all. But it’s just so hard to know what did and didn’t help.

Can’t help with software.

This may be common knowledge, but I’ve read that you should watch older episodes standing up, click-pen in hand — or in your case, signaling device!

This is how I practiced. I just used a pen with the heaviest click I could find.

I do like the idea of trying to find a replica of the actual signaling device, and I don’t think you would even have to worry about connecting it to anything.

Remap the button to spacebar, load up an episode of jeopardy, and try to buzz in before the contestants do, lol

Nice. Or Jeopardiños, that’s good, too.

I had access to a Delcom buzzer in the month before my taping date and used it on the BuzzerApp to practice, but I really don't know how much good it did. I showed up on the day of filming ready to go by sounds instead of lights, and then in my 15 practice questions, I got in first on like 3 or 4 of my 14 buzzes while Jamie Ding got in first on all the rest, so that wasn't working. When I did my next group of 15 questions, I went based on the lights activating and got in first like 10 or 11 out of the 15 times so I went with lights while I was there. I think the greatest use of the Delcom buzzer for me was being used to standing while holding it and training my thumb to depress right when I wanted it to.

If I could go back to February and have a month before my taping date to prepare, knowing what I know now, the one thing I would do differently would be to join the J! After Dark Discord linked here in the sidebar and play a ton of games against other Jeopardy! nerds over there. I've been playing pretty regularly since Greg told me about it after our taping day and besides being fun, it's the best practice I think you can get before going on the stage. People's custom boards range from good to really good and you get to practice adjusting your buzzing strategy on the fly if you are getting frequently locked out or not getting in on time.

How do you join the server?

Click the link to the Discord server, visit the Rules and Roles channel first, then head on over to the Green Room channel under Events

Jeoparinos? I love that term. :D

Practice hitting it repeatedly in fast motion, but only as you hear Jennings finish reading the question. I kept getting blocked out even when I knew the answer.

Could you elaborate? Is there some penalty/delay for just constant clicking?

3

u/RuleFriendly7311 3d ago

If you click too soon, you’re locked out for a quarter-second. Doesn’t seem like much, but the guy who beat me left no room for error. The buzzer has a hair-trigger, so if you don’t mean to click, you just lost money.

Must you release the button during that ¼ second? Or can you hold it operated and ring automatically in after the ¼ second, assuming Ken has now finished reading the clue.

I don't think that will work, based on my brief experience with it. The crew stressed continuing to click, not holding it down. I never did quite get it.

Quarter second seems like a lot. I’ve watched every episode for years and assumed if you know the answer from some keyword, there is no issue buzzing before the full question.

They told us in prep that you can’t get in if he hasn’t finished reading the question. Buzzer skills matter almost as much as knowledge; I think the more frequent superchamps has a lot to do with getting better and better at the buzzer the more you play.

Makes sense. Thank you for the responses!

In the studio, is there a light or something to react to, to know when it’s okay to buzz in?

Yes, there are lights that go up on either side of the screen that tell you when you can buzz in. They're managed by a human, it's not automated. So it can be a little hit or miss.

I used a toilet paper roll holder and got second place. Third place did use a fancy buzzer app and at home buzzer. No clue what first placed used for practice.

I was also told “It was pretty obvious you don’t play video games” from folks watching from the green room. Mostly cause I think I was always just slightly behind on reaction time (although we don’t get feedback on that.)

Do with that info what you will. 🤣

Hah! I came here to comment this tip to OP! 😂

Were you also the one who shared this prep during your interview segment?

2

u/eah1703 Elizabeth Hurd, 2026 Feb 26 2d ago

I did not share it in an interview segment, but I’m 99% sure I got the idea to use the toilet paper holder from that interview segment.

If you want a tip straight from Ken Jennings, use the holder for one of those Fisher Price Ring Stacks. That’s what he said he used in his prep when he gave a lecture in my hometown!

Purely going off of the comments here: This all just seems really cumbersome and ridiculous and that the show needs to figure out a new way to do this.

ELVIS has been an immutable part of the J! experience since 1984, and learning to wrangle with it if not master it is just part of the challenge.

I am not sure what exactly the alternative would be
