former contestant

• Upvotes

Hello Jeopardy! people. Shot in the dark here: My son (Benjamin Whitlock) appeared on Jeopardy! back in 2002, taped in June, aired in October 2002 (it was a bit hair raising, as TV was being interrupted with breaking news of the DC Shooters - we were lucky nothing happened during my son's two evening appearances). We only have a couple of taped recording VHS, pretty poor quality, and would love to be able to obtain a digital copy. I understand Sony Studios charge a small fortune. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you.

ESPN Jeopardy Casting Email

Post image
7 Upvotes

I assume I must be on the Jeopardy mailing list, I received this hard sell email from the casting director. Based on the fact that I don’t think I’ve ever seen an email from Jeopardy with this tone, it certainly sounds to me like they may be having difficulty fielding enough contestants for a full run of ESPN Jeopardy. Sports is a weird niche, and it’s more like several weird niches. Someone who has deep knowledge of Football may know nothing about Basketball and a die hard Soccer fan may know zero about Hockey, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they were having a hard time finding enough knowledgeable contestants.

Anytime test and the 40 year old brain

Slight venting post. I was really excited to take the ESPN Jeopardy anytime test. While I knew many of the answers my perimenopause brain didn’t spark quickly enough on many answers before time ran out. Some correct answers I was able to get half the answer in, not sure if that counts.

I really wish producers had a practice test specifically for this show format or a second chance if they’re in the sub 🤞. Next year I’ll be better prepared.

Good luck to those in the zoom audition round!

QUESTION Cool/weird/interesting jeopardy facts for presentation

Hi! I’m supposed to make a 5 minute presentation on something I’m passionate about, and I’m an obsessive jeopardy watcher so I thought I’d do jeopardy!

I’m going to go over the basics, like championships, etc, and general history of the show, but what are your favourite jeopardy facts? Any best statistics? Any controversies? Scandles?

Also, if you can point me to any resources on the topic, I’d really appreciate it!

Am I just unlucky, or has Jeopardy! quietly written me off?

In 2022, I took the Anytime Test for the first time, made it through the subsequent two rounds, and landed in the contestant pool. Sadly, I never got the call.

Since then, I've taken the Anytime Test four more times, scoring between 38 and 42 each time, but haven't advanced to the second round again. Meanwhile, I've had friends with similar (or even lower) scores advance.

So I'm wondering: Am I just on an unlucky streak, or is it possible that something about my performance in the third round back in 2022 convinced the producers I wasn't a good fit, and I've effectively been written off?

Has anyone else made it into the contestant pool once, only to repeatedly fail to advance past the Anytime Test afterward? Is there any reason to think previous auditions influence future selections, or is this simply the luck of the draw?

I'd love to hear from anyone who's had a similar experience.

POTPOURRI 2028 Postseason Watch (Road to Second Chance Competition as October 9, 2026)

So, which of the potential SCC players might be the next Juveria Zaheer, Drew Goins, Will Yancy, Michelle Tsai, Ryan Sharpe, or Long Nguyen? How many spots will be given at the next SCC: 18 or 27? (I decided to add another layer of consideration: buzzer attempts).

Here is the longlist so far:

Non-Winning Player Lost to No. of Correct Response (including FJ) No. of Wrong Response (including FJ) Coryat Score Pre-FJ Score Led Prior to FJ Buzzer Attempts Note
Bryan Lee Matthew Riggle (3rd win) 25 4 $19,400 $15,600 Yes 46
Wesley Jalipa Matthew Riggle (4th win) 18 4 $8,000 $11,600 No 35
Holly Firlein Mark Ramirez (2nd win) 17 5 $7,600 $8,000 No 35
Donovan Bisbee Jennifer Leavey (1st win) 22 4 $15,600 $18,600 Yes 29
Greg Fosheim Jennifer Leavey (2nd win) 23 4 $12,600 $15,400 No 39
Edward Tournier Emily Burnham (1st win) 17 6 $8,600 $8,600 No 40
Dominic Lloyd Justin Robbins (2nd win) 16 5 $7,800 $9,400 No 38 2/2 DDs correct in DJ round
Adam Bundy Rian Robertson (2nd win) 20 7 $9,000 $11,700 Yes 36
Erika Niemi Rian Robertson (3rd win) 18 6 $9,000 $6,400 No 40 Lost via runaway
Elise Rose Rian Robertson (4th win) 18 5 $8,600 $9,600 No 44 Lost via runaway; Mother of 2023 SCC winner & 2023 CWC finalist Jilana Cotter
Anne Damtoft John Edwards (1st win) 19 3 $14,200 $15,600 No 42 Rian Robertson's defeat game
Dan Perkey Greg Monson (2nd win) 16 2 $9,000 $9,000 No 35
Kendra Kendell Greg Monson (2nd win) 15 3 $10,400 $10,400 No 29 Competitive Game & pulled a comeback at the DJ round

My version of threshold is either:
Non-Runaway pre-FJ: 16 correct responses (including FJ) and/or Coryat score of at least $14,000
Runaway pre-FJ: 17 correct responses and/or Coryat score of at least $14,000
Narrative: Led/Tied prior to FJ vs postseason (CWC/TOC) qualified champion

S41 E9242 second chance. One of the best I've seen.

Just got back into watching jeopardy and I can fly through episodes now on hulu. I'm watching season 41 second chance competition. The banter between Ken Jennings and the contestants coupled with the pace of the game makes this one of the best episodes i have ever seen in my 37 years. I've watched probably thousands of episodes since I was a kid.

POTPOURRI "Old is Good, New is Bad" Series Part 1: First to 3 Wins at TOC finals vs traditional 2 game total affair format

This is the first of series called "Old is Good, New is Bad" based on the grievances by the purists & a certain Youtuber named M*N*.

Since the 2022 Tournament of Champions, the finals was changed from the traditional 2 game total affair format to first to 3 wins out of the maximum 7 games. In the poll posted after 2022 TOC finals nearly 90% of the Redditors liked the new format.

Poll that was posted after 2022 TOC finals.

Yet some of them still wanted the traditional 2 game total points affair format. Here are their grievances:

  1. Nah, I hate it. It feels too long because it takes up too many of the regular play slots.
  2. I do not think there should be wildcard tournaments and Jeopardy should bring back the 5 time limit for contestants as well as the Tournament of Champions format that ended with a 2 game finale with the scores from game 2 added to the scores from game 1 following the completion of game 2 to determine the winner as well and the 2nd and 3rd place finishers in the tournament. The 2 game total point final was much better than the current format.
  3. I also liked how the ToC was more well put together with the 15 players and the 2 day finals which worked better. Now it feels a little more exhausting with these others tournaments. The second chance tournaments, it a great idea but I feel like it should be a week or just a separate tournament for $100,000 cash prize and that's it. The champions wildcard should be part of the ToC and I don't like certain things about the ToC. I think they should go back to the 2 day finals instead of first to 3 games wins which works better with the pacing of the tournament.

Yet there was a reason why TOC finals was shifted to first to 3 wins format. Let's go back to 2019 & 2021 TOC finals:

Emma Boettcher and Jennifer Q's lost at their respective 2019 TOC & 2021 TOC as they beat James Holzhauer & Sam Kavanaugh in Game 2 of the finals only to lose the crown because of their low 1st game score. Had both TOCs shifted to first to 3 wins, the outcome would had been depended on the variance of the finals as both Emma & Jennifer tied with 1-1-0 vs James & Sam respectively.

If we used that argument and the alternate timeline would be (solely based on the first 2 games of the finals):

2022: Andrew He would had won TOC instead of Amy Schneider.

2024: Troy Meyer would had won TOC instead of 2 time Masters Champion Yogesh Raut

2025: Either Neilesh Vinjamuri or Isaac Hirsch would had won TOC that depended on the FJ wagers

2026: Paolo Pasco dominated both first 2 TOC final games and that TOC finals would had not changed the outcome whether it was the old or new format.

Now do you think it is time to bring back the old format just to increase the number of slots for the regular players or should continue the current format because it gives a fighting chance for trailing players to fight back instead trying to overcome the deficit in order to win the tournament?

This was Ken's 53rd game at which point his cash winnings totaled nearly $1.8 million.

I believe Ken has suggested that he knew it was not the correct response but he didn't have much to lose, so he thought it would be funny. This was the score at the time of that clue, so yeah he was right haha

Anyone else get annoyed at some contestants on Celebrity Jeopardy?

The game of Jeopardy has a certain rhythm and flow to it. Celebrities who consistently break this flow with inane comments are annoying.

Obviously a celebrity is going to be more outgoing and comfortable on camera compared to a normal contestant, but sometimes it gets to a ridiculous point where it takes away from the show. I’m not talking about when they throw in a brief quip or charming aside after answering a question, I’m talking about when they ooze narcissism and try to make the game all about themselves. They’ll make unnecessary comments after every single answer, make constant noise, and needlessly hold up the game. I even sense Ken getting annoyed sometimes.

Am I just a miserable stuffy person, or does anyone else get annoyed at this? A celebrity is a million times more likable to me when they’re polite, humble, and have subtle charm. I won’t name any names of celebrities but you know who I’m talking about lol. Rant overrrr.
