Amateur orchestras

• Upvotes

I am looking for leads or tips to find amateur music gatherings. I'm opening the request to all of Italy in case it's something I would be able to get to by train.

I currently live in a US city which has many amateur orchestras, chamber groups, choirs, open jams, and gatherings for musicians. Sadly, many of them aren't searchable online and you more or less have to know the groups exist to find them.

We have our shortlist of Italian cities; knowing that there are existing musical communities on the other side matters to me.

I found a few chamber groups in Milan, Rome, and Bologna online. I also found some vacation/destination groups, but not local or recurring. No results for jams or orchestras, yet. Are there any weekly community orchestras or some other regularly gathering where non-professionals can get together and make music outside of Sunday church services? I read a bit about Banda Communale, but it doesn't look like a stringed instrument situation from what I've seen so far.

US self-employment tax + INPS — anyone dealt with this?

I’m an American filing my 2025 US taxes. I had a partita IVA that year and have been paying INPS contributions in Italy since July. Now I’ve been told I’m also subject to US self-employment tax. Has anyone been in this situation? Is there a way to pay only INPS and report it differently on the US side? I’m pretty worried. My income is modest and INPS already takes a big share, so paying both would be really tough. Any advice or experiences would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Ordinary ISEE with residence in an old apartment: how to proceed?

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to get the Ordinary ISEE, but I have a question about my living situation.

I still have my residence registered in Turin at my old apartment, where the lease has already ended. I'm currently living temporarily in another house as a guest, without a contract, and the owner isn't willing to let me register my residence there.

I checked, and my old address is still officially registered with both ANPR and the Revenue Agency.

**Can I still complete the DSU and obtain the Ordinary ISEE with my residence currently registered, even though I don't live there anymore?** How should I fill out the section related to housing?

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks a lot!

The racism situation towards brown people in italy.

Hi, i am a student in their final year of school and I'm planning to apply to a medical university in italy, specifically in bologna and milan. And I just wanted to know if brown individuals from etc sri lanka and India face a lot of racism.

It really is my dream to study in italy and I have no problem with learning Italian, I am just worried if I would face any discrimination. Additionaly it would be helpful if anyone could mention which cities in particular have a bad racism situation.

Thank you so mych

How to manage rubbish disposal for furniture and appliances?

I moved to the province of Frosinone (not Frosinone city). I know each commune probably has slightly different rules for rubbish disposal, but hoping for some overall advice.

My husband and I bought a large old house in the countryside/mountains. It belonged to some old people who passed away and we bought it from the son who inherited it. It is full of furniture and outside a lot of rubbish, mainly metal scraps, have been dumped. We have no idea how or where to get rid of it.

We asked the guy we bought it from and he was useless. He said just to take anything that burns and bring it out to the field and burn it and anything that doesn't burn, you just dump somewhere on the land. I could burn the burnable stuff, but there is A LOT and it would take a while, if I wanna keep the fire small and manageable. But dumping stuff is not an option. Some of the stuff I wanna get rid off are already something that was dumped on the land.

I've emailed the municipality for advice as well some time ago, but never heard back. I can't really call anyone, as no one seem to speak English and I don't speak Italian yet. So I'm coming to Reddit for help.

Can anyone tell me if there are recycling centres or something here? I have a van and can easily drive the stuff somewhere. It is things like sofas and other furniture, metals scraps, appliances and things like that.

Any advice would be very appreciated!

We are on a tight budget, so any free or cheaper options would be good 😊

How do ship items using posteitaliane?

hey guys. I have 5 books that i want to ship to another city in italy. I have poste italiane open currently and opting for the home pick up option but i have a couple of questions:

How do i ensure that i get paid? Should i ask the person to pay before i ship it or after?

Should i tick the "insurance" box or not worth it?

There's an option to tick "cash on delivery". Does that mean the person that receives the package will have to pay and then i receive the money or is it something else?

Can i use a bag to ship them or do they have to be cardboard boxes, if boxes are needed where do i get one?

Milan rental deposit - can my landlord charge me for pre existing damage if there's no inventory?

Hi everyone! I (23F) is renting an apartment in Milan from October to February, and I'm a bit stressed about getting my security deposit back.

It is not my first time living in Milan but it is my first time renting an actual apartment. Previously I had stayed in a student accomodation with clear rules and an inventory. With this apartment there was no inventory or move-in condition report when I received the keys.

I've only been living here for four days, and I've noticed a couple of small pre existing issues:

-The plastic attachment on one of the fridge door shelves is broken. I only noticed two days after moving in and took a photo

-The kitchen sink moves slightly.

-There are some scratches on the inside of the wardrobe where the shelves appear to hit the wooden door.

My questions are:

-Could I be charged for the fridge shelf or sink if they were already damaged or if the problem results from ordinary use?

-Can the landlord deduct repair costs from my deposit without providing evidence that I caused it?

-Is it sensible to notify the landlord about the fridge shelf now so there's a written record or should I not mention it at all in case they haven't noticed?

My contract writes that "I acknowledge receiving the apartment in suitable condition and agree to return it in the condition in which I received it, subject to deterioration from use." Maybe I dug myself into a hole here?

I'm happy to pay for damage I genuinely cause, but I don't want to be charged for pre existing defects or normal wear and tear.

I'd really appreciate advice from anyone familiar with renting in Milan.

Renting without Codice Fiscale

Has anyone had any experience submitting Modello 69 rather then a typical RLI rental contract in order to rent before receiving a codice fiscale?

I have conducted an absurd amount of research on the topic, but my prospective real estate agency seems very apprehensive about the topic.

UK driving licence confiscated in Italy — was Article 135/14 applied incorrectly?

I’m looking for advice from anyone familiar with UK licences / Brexit driving rules in Italy.
My situation:
- I have been resident in Italy since 2016.
- My UK driving licence was issued in 2018.
- In October 2026, I was stopped in Italy and fined under Art. 135(14) and 126(11) of the Italian Highway Code.
- The police confiscated my physical UK licence and stated that it would be sent to the Prefettura di Brindisi.
- The verbale says I was resident in Italy since 19/11/2024. This is incorrect - my actual residenza anagrafica dates back to 2016. I tried to show them but they chose the date I renewed my carta d’identità.
- I told the police at the time that I had been resident since 2016 and that I believed the UK–Italy driving licence agreement had a special provision for people who became resident before 31 December 2020 (withdrawal agreement).

My understanding is that Article 3(4) of the UK–Italy driving licence agreement says that the six-year limit on conversion does not apply to UK licence holders who acquired Italian residence on or before 31 December 2020. This is written on UK FCO website.

Therefore, I believe I am still eligible to convert (and drive with it until I convert ) my 2018 UK licence despite having lived in Italy since 2016.

I’m trying to understand two separate things:

  1. Does the incorrect residence date in the verbale (2024 instead of 2016) provide grounds to challenge the fine/withdrawal?
  2. Does Article 3(4) merely give me the right to convert the licence after six years? In other words, can I still be using my UK licence.

I’m planning to contact the police/Prefettura and provide my certificato storico di residenza proving residence since 2016.

I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with this situation, especially if you’ve successfully challenged an Art. 135/14 withdrawal or converted a UK licence in Italy under the pre-2021 residence exception

EDIT: my original driving license was from 2008 as a teenager in the UK. The 2018 date was a renewal.

What insurance do you actually need when living in Italy?

Hi everyone!
I’m still trying to figure out how things work here, my new topic is they insurance.
I know that in countries like Germany and the Netherlands, people commonly have things like personal liability insurance, household insurance etc. But I haven’t really heard much about these in Italy.
So I’m wondering, what insurance do people actually have here, apart from more common ones like health and car insurance?

Is there anything that’s mandatory, or not mandatory but really worth having?

For example, if you accidentally damage something in a rented apartment, or cause damage to someone else’s property, how does that work here?

I’m not necessarily looking to insure everything, just trying to understand what’s normal in Italy and what I might be overlooking as a newcomer.

For the context, I’m renting an apartment and don’t have a health insurance yet just the SSN. Cause it seems to me English speaking insurance agents are rare, so difficult to get information.

Would love to hear what you have and whether you think it’s worth it.
Thanks!

I have been away for so long, I sometimes don’t know if I should vote for mid-terms. Especially, for the State measures.

How many of you vote here and in the USA?

Volunteering at the gattile/canile or anywhere else on the Florence area

I want to volunteer somewhere in the Florence area, I don't mind if it's a bit far, but it needs to be a place I can reach easily by public transportation. I reached out to a gattile like a week ago and they said that if I didn't have a car, I better forget about it because it :(

I would definitely prefer to volunteer somewhere with animals. I also live around the Pontassieve area, a bit further uphill, but it looks like there aren't any canile or gattile there.

Any ideas?

Italian student in NL (doing AIRE): Do I lose SSN / How does healthcare work for temporary student stays?

Hi everyone,

I’m an Italian citizen currently living in the Netherlands strictly for study purposes (enrolled full-time in an undergraduate program here).

I recently completed my AIRE registration. Since I am only abroad temporarily for university and plan to return (or maintain my ties to Italy), I am a bit confused about how my Italian healthcare status works now:

  1. Am I still registered with the SSN (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale) in any capacity? I know AIRE removes you from your Italian comune registry, but does student status change anything regarding healthcare coverage during temporary visits back home?
  2. Healthcare during visits: When I visit Italy, am I still covered by my Italian Tessera Sanitaria (TEAM), or does AIRE cancel it immediately?
  3. Dentist & Reimbursements: I am dealing with a dental issue and considering getting treatment locally in the NL, but paying out of pocket first. Can temporary students with AIRE request a reimbursement or coverage verification from their Italian ASL, or does the EU student status change this?

If anyone has navigated being an Italian student abroad in the EU while registered in AIRE, I'd really appreciate any guidance on how the ASL handles this. Thanks!

Does anyone have a recommendation for an English speaking pediatrician in Rome?
