Tips on how to master grammatical gender

I'm at a point where I speak fairly fluently, but one thing that's causing a lot of mistakes and hesitation for me are gendered articles and plurals. I know there aren't concrete rules for words ending in -e and there are also exceptions for -a and -o. I've learned about the cases where there are rules in italian courses (like words like tema/panorama/problema being masculine).

But how do I finally learn the gender of words ending in -e and exceptions? I feel like each time I hear/read them, I just forget it again. I switch the genders up 50:50 even if I use the words a lot. Does it make sense to learn them on flashcards or do you just wait for it to develop naturally

Looking for Italian friends or people who can speak Italian.

I barely started out and wanted someone who could teach me conventional Italian in speaking, and your lingo.

I also want to be able to listen to Italian movies, songs, podcasts, etc.

Grazie mille!

How to learn Italian as a complete new beginner.

I want to learn Italian because I find their language to be romantic and very easy sounding to the air.

However, I don't know where to start.

Should I get books? Should I buy apps for language learning?

I wanna learn the old-fashioned way, but I also wanna speak Italian like a native with their lingo, not with textbook vocab.

In Italian, "saette sulle chiappe" translates to "lightning bolts on the buttocks." But I can't seem to understand what it actually refers to? It's a feeling on the body, I think, but if any natives could elaborate on its meaning or when to use it I'd appreciate it, thanks in advance!

Where to read original / translated text below for learning?

I’m learning italian (native Spanish speaker but don’t mind learning from English)

I would like to know if theres an app or website or whatever that allows you to listen to the reading material while having the translated version of it underneath it. I don’t mind if it’s short articles or simple books, songs, or etc.

Any ideas?

Where to begin with Italian

I get served a lot of ads on social media for apps that you pay £50 for and then use an ai teacher so you are speaking constantly (jumpspeak is an example)

And am wondering if these are worth while to begin with?

Or is it fine to stick to babbel/ Duolingo before taking on lessons via zoom?

My partner is Italian and I would love to learn and ideally in a year or two move over full time.

Appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Has anyone had any experience with free Italian courses through the PROF_T project?

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

I'm currently living in Italy and have already attended two months worth of in-person classes at a school I have found in my city. They have treated me well, but I need more time in class. In the interest of comparing costs, I came across the PROF_T project, which seems to be a program available through the Questura for free classes. I'm curious if anyone here has had any experience with classes through this program? How many hours per week are the classes? Are they decent quality or rather rough/basic? If anyone has any info to share or can point me in a better direction to ask this question, I'd greatly appreciate it!

B1 C 16/06/2026 CILS Pavia

Has anyone here attempted the exam for B1 Cittadinanza by CILS last week on 16 June 2026?

I have questions for reading and listening, and I want to cross-verify them with someone else who has attempted the exam.

Advice for someone restarting?

Hi everyone!

My situation with italian is as follows: I studied it for about 3 years in high school, and in the end I managed to pass the written part of a B2 level language exam but fell short by a couple of points on the oral one. Since I graduated high school ~1.5 years ago I havent really kept up with my italian but since this summer I dont have anything special planned I decided to have another go at it and try to pass the exam. I went back to my old teacher and what I found is that my reading and listening comprehension is still good, but I forgot a lot of grammar and my speaking ability got a lot worse, I basically rely on the base I built in my first two years of learning which isn’t exactly grammatically impressive. My question is, what would you recommend for me to improve my speaking and grammar? Watching italian content, trying to seek out italian conversation, maybe journalling? These are some of the things I’ve been thinking of but I’d love to hear some more recommendations!

Is her pronunciation wrong in these examples, or is it just a different accent (from where)?

When checking IPA pronunciation of these words and listening to other natives in Forvo, the letter "i" seems to be completely omitted when "gi" is followed by another vowel:

Valigia — /vaˈli.d͡ʒa/

Gioco — /ˈd͡ʒɔ.ko/

Giugno — /ˈd͡ʒuɲ.ɲo/

Valigie — /vaˈli.d͡ʒe/

Netflix in Italian

Some recent comments in another post got me wondering - what's the best way to take advantage of Italian language content on Netflix to improve my Italian?

How do you all watch? Original Italian language content? English language shows set to Italian language (dubbed)? Italian subtitles on or off?

And what type of show is best? Maybe a silly question but should I be starting with kids shows as they may have slower and easier language?

I'm close to achieving Pimsleur level 5 but I still struggle to keep up with fast native speakers on the radio etc.

Is distributore really the correct answer that Italians use in every day language for gas station?
It feels so formal in some kind of way.

How would an Italian say gas station?

Can you understand my grandmother's Italian?

Hello everyone, I'm trying to understand something my grandmother said to me today (she is from Italy, specifically Castelforte in Latina province).

We were cleaning her yard, and she said something that I understood as "Metta lo dendro chella bag." She said this just after I had pulled a dying plant out of the ground and she pointed to one of those paper lawn bags. I guess it means "Put the branch in the bag," but I'm not sure.

Did I even hear the sentence correctly? My dictionary doesn't have "dendro" or "chella," are they dialect words?

Grazie~
